Insights into in-situ TiB/dual-phase Ti alloy interface and its high load-bearing capacity

To better understand the strengthening mechanism of in-situ formed TiB reinforcements in dual-phase Ti6 Al4 V alloy,the interface characters and properties ofα-Ti/β-Ti/TiB system were thoroughly investigated with the combined use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM),abinitio calculations,and indentation *** ab-initio calculations suggest that the highly coherent(100)_(TiB)/(121)_(β-Ti)phase boundary(PB)has fairly low interface energy of 0.082 J/m^(2)with an exceptionally high adhesion strength of 6.04 J/m^(2),owing to the formation of strong interfacial Ti–B ionic *** semi-coherent(201)_(TiB)/(0001)_(α-Ti)interface shows a relatively higher interface energy of 1.442 J/m^(2)but still with a fairly high adhesion strength of 4.95 J/m^(2).With the obtained interfacial energetics,thermodynamics analyses were further carried out to explore the nucleation mechanism ofα-Ti in TiB reinforced Ti6Al4V *** to the heterogeneous nucleation at TiB/β-Ti interface,the homogeneous nucleation ofα-Ti within theβ-Ti phase can be more energy-preferred,due to its lower nucleation energy barrier and critical *** indentation tests under various loads of different modes confirmed a remarkably enhanced load-bearing capacity of dual-phase Ti6Al4V alloys,under the critical significance of the strong interfacial bonding achieved by reinforcements of in-situ formed TiB.

Dear Editor When membrane proteins and secretory proteins are incom- pletely folded or mis-folded, they are retained in the endo- plasmic reticulum （ER） for further folding or degradation. Two major degradation systems involved in removing the mis-folded or unfolded proteins retained in the ER have been identified： ER-associated degradation （ERAD）, which targets misfolded proteins for ubiquitination and subsequent degradattion through the proteasome pathway （McCracken and Brodsky, 1996）.

Softest elastic mode governs materials hardness

Single-crystal elastic constants and mechanical hardness of covalent and ionic crystals have been studied using first-principles *** results show that the hardness is dominated by the softest elastic mode,not by the averaged elastic moduli as generally *** reveals that the mechanical stability and anisotropy play an important role in determining the hardness of *** concept is then employed in designing hard *** strengthening the softest elastic mode of tungsten carbide,which is the primary component in industrial hard alloys,we show that the carbide can be made even harder by alloying with nitrogen or rhenium via Fermi-level tuning.

Water abundance in four of the brightest water sources in the southern sky

We estimated the ortho-H2O abundances of G267.9–1.1, G268.4–0.9, G333.1–0.4 and G336.5–1.5, four of the brightest ortho-H2O sources in the southern sky observed by the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite（ortho-H2O1（10） – 1（01） line, 556.936 GHz）. The typical molecular clumps in our sample have H2 column densities of 10^22 to 10^23cm^-2 and ortho-H2O abundances of 10^-10. Compared with previous studies, the ortho-H2O abundances are at a low level, which can be caused by the low temperatures of these clumps. To estimate the ortho-H2O abundances, we used the CS J = 2 → 1 line（97.98095 GHz）and CS J = 5 → 4（244.93556 GHz） line observed by the Swedish-ESO 15 m Submillimeter Telescope（SEST） to calculate the temperatures of the clumps and the 350 μm dust continuum observed by the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory（CSO） telescope to estimate the H2 column densities. The observations of N2H^＋（J = 1 → 0） for these clumps were also acquired by SEST and the corresponding abundances were estimated. The N2H^＋ abundance in each clump shows a common decreasing trend toward the center and a typical abundance range from 10^-11 to 10^-9.

Monte Carlo Simulation on Layered Polymeric Films

Thin films of polymer blends composed of alternating copolymer, diblock copolymer and/or homopolymer are studied using Monte Carlo simulation. A multilayer morphology is observed in the film, that is, the blended polymers assemble into individual domains arranged from interior to the surfaces of the film. The coexisting components residing throughout the neighboring domains in the film make no distinguishable interface between any neighboring domains. By this means, it forms a vertical composition gradient in the polymeric film. Being different from layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolyte or hydrogen bonding approach etc., the layered structure in this study is formed by polymer blending in one step. Alternating copolymers are found to be essential components to form vertical composition gradient （layered structure） in thin films.

Near-Term Projections of Global and Regional Land Mean Temperature Changes Considering Both the Secular Trend and Multidecadal Variability

Near-term climate projections are needed by policymakers; however, these projections are difficult because internally generated climate variations need to be considered. In this study, temperature change scenarios in the near-term period 2017-35 are projected at global and regional scales based on a refined multi-model ensemble approach that considers both the secular trend(ST) and multidecadal variability(MDV) in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5(CMIP5) simulations. The ST and MDV components are adaptively extracted from each model simulation by using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition(EEMD) filter, reconstructed via the Bayesian model averaging(BMA) method for the historical period 1901-2005, and validated for 2006-16. In the simulations of the "medium" representative concentration pathways scenario during 2017-35, the MDV-modulated temperature change projected via the refined approach displays an increase of 0.44℃(90% uncertainty range from 0.30 to 0.58℃) for global land, 0.48℃(90% uncertainty range from 0.29 to 0.67℃) for the Northern Hemispheric land(NL), and 0.29℃(90% uncertainty range from 0.23 to 0.35℃) for the Southern Hemispheric land(SL). These increases are smaller than those projected by the conventional arithmetic mean approach. The MDV enhances the ST in 13 of 21 regions across the world. The largest MDV-modulated warming effect(46%) exists in central America. In contrast,the MDV counteracts the ST in NL, SL, and eight other regions, with the largest cooling effect(220%) in Alaska.

Analysis and simulation of high-power LED array with microchannel heat sink

The high power light emitting diode （LED） array integrated with the microchannel heat sink is designed in this paper, and then optimal analysis and simulation have been carried out. According to the theory of heat transfer and fluid mechanics, the calculation of the thermal resistance for the microchannel heat sink is obtained, and the thermal resis- tance is minimized. Finally the simulation with FLUENT software is developed to verify the theoretical analysis. Established analysis and simulation show that the width of the cooling channel is 0.1 mm, and the cooling water flow rate is 1 m/s. On the other hand, the system acquires the best heat dissipation effect, and the minimum of thermal resis- tance is 0.019 W/℃.
