The initiation processes of one of the initial convective cells near and on the east side of a dryline on 19 June 2002 during the IHOP 2002 field experiment in the central United States is analyzed in detail based on a high-resolution numerical simulation. Prominent horizontal convective rolls and associated near-surface moisture convergence bands [called roll convergence bands(RCBs) here] develop within the convective boundary layer(CBL) due to surface heating, in the hours leading to convective initiation(CI). The RCBs east of the dryline are advected toward the primary dryline convergence boundary(PDCB) by the southerly moist flow as the CBL deepens with time. Backward trajectories of air parcels forming the initial precipitating updraft of the convective cell are found to primarily originate at about 1–1.5 km above ground, within the upper portion of the shallower CBL earlier on. The representative air parcel is found to follow and stay on top of a surface RCB as the RCB moves toward the PDCB, but the RCB forcing alone is not enough to initiate convection. As this RCB gets close to the PDCB, it moves into a zone of mesoscale convergence and a deeper CBL that exhibits an upward moisture bulge associated with the PDCB. The combined upward forcing of the RCB and the mesoscale PDCB convergence quickly lifts the representative air parcel above its level of free convection to initiate convection. A conceptual model summarizing the CI processes is proposed.

The title compound, [Cu（dpa）（2,2＇-bipy）（H2O）2]n 1 （H2dpa = diphenic acid and 2,2＇- bipy = 2,2＇-bipyridine）, has been synthesized and its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal is of orthorhombic, space group P212121 with a = 10.597（4）, b = 11.317（4）, c = 17.630（7）A, V = 2114.3（14）A^3, C24H20CuN2O6, Mr = 495.97, Z = 4, Dc = 1.558 g/cm^3, μ = 1.079 mm^-1, F（000） = 1020, Flack value = 0.052（18）, R = 0.0430 and wR = 0.1016 for 3381 observed reflections （Ⅰ 〉 2σ（Ⅰ））. In compound 1, the dpa ligands link metal ions into helical structures in the same direction.

AIM To provide evidence regarding the postoperative treatment of patients with T4 b N1-3 M0/Tx N3 b M0 gastric cancer, for which guidelines have not been established. METHODS Patients who had undergone curative resection between 1996 and 2014 with a pathological stage of T4 b N1-3 M0/Tx N3 b M0 for gastric cancer were retrospectively analyzed; staging was based on the 7 th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system. The clinicopathological characteristics, administration of adjuvant chemotherapy, and patterns of recurrence were studied. Univariate and multivariate analyses of prognostic factors were conducted. The chemotherapeutic agents mainly included fluorouropyrimidine, platinum and taxanes, used as monotherapy, doublet, or triplet regimens. Patterns of first recurrence were categorized as locoregional recurrence, peritoneal dissemination, or distant *** The 5-year overall survival(OS) of the whole group(n = 176) was 16.8%, and the median OS was 25.7 mo(95%CI: 20.9-30.5). Lymphovascular invasion and a node positive rate(NPR) ≥ 0.8 were associated with a poor prognosis(P = 0.01 and P = 0.048, respectively). One hundred forty-seven(83.5%) of the 176 patients eventually experienced recurrence; the most common pattern of the first recurrence was distant metastasis. The prognosis was best for patients with locoregional recurrence and worst for those with peritoneal dissemination. Twelve(6.8%) of the 176 patients did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy, while 164(93.2%) patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. Combined chemotherapy, including doublet and triplet regimens, was associated with a better prognosis than monotherapy, with no significant difference in 5-year OS(17.5% vs 0%, P = 0.613). The triplet regimen showed no significant survival benefit compared with the doublet regimen for 5-year OS(18.5% vs 17.4%, P = 0.661). The characteristic of precipitation behavior of a2 phase and silicide, and the tensile properties at room temperature and 650℃after heat treatments in anovel TiAl-Sn-Zr-Mo-Nb-W-Si titanium alloy（BTi-6431 S） were investigated by microstructure analysis and mechanics performance testing. The results show that no second phase precipitates after solution treatment(980 ℃/2 h, air cooling（AC）). However, when the solution-treated specimens are aged at 600 ℃（600 ℃/2 h,AC）,α;phase precipitates in the primary α phase, and the size of α;phase increases with the aging temperature increasing to 750 ℃. Meanwhile, 50-100-nm S2-type silicide particles precipitate along lamellar phase boundaries of transformed β phase after aging at 750 ℃. BTi-6431 S alloy shows the best650 ℃ ultimate tensile strength（UTS） and yield strength（YS） when treated in solution treatment. However, aging treatment results in a decline in 650 ℃ ultimate tensile strength. This may be attributed to the loss of solution strengthening due to the depletion of Al, Si and Zr of the matrix caused by the precipitation of Ti;Al and（TiZr）;Si;.Silicide is a brittle phase; therefore, its precipitation causes a sharp decrease in the room-temperature ductility of BTi-6431 S alloy.

Clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of patients with giant intracranial aneurysms

Background Compared with smaller aneurysms, giant intracranial aneurysms （GICAs） have a poorer prognosis and require more meticulous surgical planning and techniques to exclude them from the circulation. GICAs continue to challenge the limits of neurosurgical techniques. A series of 170 patients with GICAs were reviewed for understanding the clinical characteristics, surgical treatment and outcomes of patients with GICAs.Methods Collected data of 170 consecutive patients with GICAs from January 1995 to July 2007 were analyzed. The clinical characteristics in this study included age, sex, intracranial aneurysms size, the first presentations, locations and Hunt ＆ Hess grade. Surgical methods included direct clipping of the aneurysm neck, parent artery reconstruction, proximal artery ligation, trapping and wrapping. Surgical results were evaluated postoperatively by the Glasgow Outcome Scale （GOS）.Results GICAs were more commonly diagnosed at age 30 to 50 years with a mean age of 39.3 years and without obvious gender preponderance in our study （88 male and 82 female patients）. The size of the GICAs ranged from 2.5 cm to 8.0 cm （mean, 2.9 cm）. Hemorrhage （41%）, mass effect （34%） and headache （12%） were the first 3 most common presentations. Regarding the Hunt ＆ Hess classification, at admission there were 100 cases in grade 0. 24 in grade 1,21 in grade 2, 16 in grade 3, 8 in grade 4 and 1 in grade 5. There were 84 cases of GICAs treated by direct neck-clipping, 47 by parent artery reconstruction, 19 by proximal artery occlusion （with 4 combined with revascularization）, 18 by trapping and 2 by wrapping. The follow-up study （ranging from 6 to 115 months, mean 32 months） showed good results in 108 cases, moderate disability in 26 and severe disability in 15 accordina to GOS. Six cases died. AIM: To investigate the phenotype and genotype of a family with X-linked recessive Lowe syndrome. METHODS: All the members in the Chinese pedigree underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic and systemic examinations. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood of the pedigree members and 100 unrelated healthy Chinese subjects. Direct sequencing was performed to screen the exons and intron boundaries of ***: The ophthalmological and systemic exami nations suggested that the affected individual had Lowe syndrome. The phenotype in the pedigree is severe and consistent among all the affected individuals except for an individual who additionally suffered from congenital heart disease and laryngeal cartilage dysplasia. Directio nal San ger sequenci ng identified a complex mutation c.(2368_2368delG;c.2370A>C) in the Rho-GTPase activating protein domain. This complex mutation causes termination of protein synthesis at amino acid 824 and result in a new peptide with 823 amino acids (***790ProfsX34). This mutation was not detected in 100 unrelated healthy Chinese ***: Our findings expand the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum of Lowe syndrome.
