Pa.ticle Distribution Informed by Cha.n Rigidity in Diblock Copolymer Melts: The Effect of Entropy

We study the effect of cha.n rigidity on ta.loring the na.opa.ticle loca.ions for neutra. a.d selective pa.ticles embedded in the la.ella. morphology formed by semiflexible diblock copolymer cha.ns using self-consistent field ca.cula.ions. The na.opa.ticles a.e modeled through a.ca.ity function, a.d the semiflexible cha.ns a.e represented by the continuous Kra.sky-Porod cha.n model. In genera. situa.ion, the na.opa.ticles prefer to sta. a. the interfa.e in order to reduce the interfa.e a.ea. a.d thus the system free energy. However, the pa.ticle distribution a. the doma.n center is subtle, a.d the underlying physics is intrinsica.ly different depending on the polymer flexibility. In the ca.e of flexible cha.ns, the entropy just contributes a.consta.t shift to the free energy when the na.opa.ticles move a.ound the doma.n center indica.ing tha. the loca. meta.ta.le sta.e if a.pea.s a. the doma.n center is wholly a.tributed to the loca. minimum in the entha.py. If the polymers a.e rigid, the va.ia.ion of the pa.ticle distribution a. the doma.n center ha. a.close rela.ion with the polymer rigidity a.d na.opa.ticle size. In the ca.e of strongly rigid polymers with sma.l na.opa.ticles, a.nea.ly uniform pa.ticle distribution a. the doma.n center is observed, while in other ca.es, a.loca. enha.cement of pa.ticle distribution there is found. In contra.t to the ca.e of flexible cha.ns, further a.a.ysis revea.s the crucia. role of entropy in controlling the sha.e of pa.ticle distributions a. the pha.e doma.n. Specifica.ly, the loca. meta.ta.le sta.e a.pea.s in the doma.n center is determined by the la.ge entropy there which a.ises from the wea. coupling of bond orienta.ions tha. a.lows the polymer cha.ns to be rela.ively rela.ed. When the pa.ticle becomes selective, its distribution in the pha.e doma.n exhibits a.shift a.most uniformly ra.her tha. cha.ges its profile, a.d the underlying physics still holds.
