Improved forecasting via physics-guided machine learning as exemplified using“21·7”extreme rainfall event in Henan

As a natural disaster,extreme precipitation is among the most destructive and influential,but predicting its occurrence and evolution accurately is very challenging because of its rarity and uniqueness.Taking the example of the“21·7”extreme precipitation event(17–21 July 2021)in Henan Province,this study explores the potential of using physics-guided machine learning to improve the accuracy of forecasting the intensity and location of extreme precipitation.Three physics-guided ways of embedding physical features,fusing physical model forecasts and revised loss function are used,i.e.,(1)analyzing the anomalous circulation and thermodynamical factors,(2)analyzing the multi-model forecast bias and the associated underlying reasons for it,and(3)using professional forecasting knowledge to design the loss function,and the corresponding results are used as input for machine learning to improve the forecasting accuracy.The results indicate that by learning the relationship between anomalous physical features and heavy precipitation,the forecasting of precipitation intensity is improved significantly,but the location is rarely adjusted and more false alarms appear.Possible reasons for this are as follows.The anomalous features used here mainly contain information about large-scale systems and factors which are consistent with the model precipitation deviation;moreover,the samples of extreme precipitation are sparse and so the algorithm used here is simple.However,by combining“good and different”multi models with machine learning,the advantages of each model are extracted and then the location of the precipitation center in the forecast is improved significantly.Therefore,by combining the appropriate anomalous features with multi-model fusion,an integrated improvement of the forecast of the rainfall intensity and location is achieved.Overall,this study is a novel exploration to improve the refined forecasting of heavy precipitation with extreme intensity and high variability,and provides a reference for the deep fusion of

Improvement of fabrication efficiency and part performance was the main challenge for the large-scale powder bed fusion(PBF)process.In this study,a dynamic monitoring and feedback system of powder bed temperature field using an infrared thermal imager has been established and integrated into a four-laser PBF equipment with a working area of 2000 mm×2000 mm.The heat-affected zone(HAZ)temperature field has been controlled by adjusting the scanning speed dynamically.Simultaneously,the relationship among spot size,HAZ temperature,and part performance has been established.The fluctuation of the HAZ temperature in four-laser scanning areas was decreased from 30.85℃to 17.41℃.Thus,the consistency of the sintering performance of the produced large component has been improved.Based on the controllable temperature field,a dynamically adjusting strategy for laser spot size was proposed,by which the fabrication efficiency was improved up to 65.38%.The current research results were of great significance to the further industrial applications of large-scale PBF equipment.

Exceptional points(EPs),at which two or more eigenvalues and eigenstates of a resonant system coalesce,are associated with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with gain and/or loss elements.Dynamic encircling of EPs has received significant interest in recent years,as it has been shown to lead to highly nontrivial phenomena,such as chiral transmission in which the final state of the system depends on the encircling handedness.Previously,chiral transmission for a pair of eigenmodes has been realized by establishing a closed dynamical trajectory in parity-time-(PT-)or anti-PT-symmetric systems.Although chiral transmission of symmetry-broken modes,more accessible in practical photonic integrated circuits,has been realized by establishing a closed trajectory encircling EPs in anti-PTsymmetric systems,the demonstrated transmission efficiency is very low due to path-dependent losses.Here,we demonstrate chiral dynamics in a coupled waveguide system that does not require a closed trajectory.Specifically,we explore an open trajectory linking two infinite points having the same asymptotic eigenmodes(not modes in PT-and anti-PT-symmetric systems),demonstrating that this platform enables high-efficiency chiral transmission,with each eigenmode localized in a single waveguide.This concept is experimentally implemented in a coupled silicon waveguide system at telecommunication wavelengths.Our work provides a new evolution strategy for chiral dynamics with superior performance,laying the foundation for the development of practical chiral-transmission devices.

Elucidating the genetic basis of natural variation in grain size and weight among rice varieties can help breeders develop high-yielding varieties.We identified a novel gene,GW3a(Grain Weight 3a)(LOC_Os03g27350),that affects rice grain size and weight.gw3a mutants showed higher total starch content and dry matter accumulation than the wild type(WT),Nipponbare,suggesting that GW3a negatively regulates grain size and weight.Moreover,our study found that GW3a interacted with OsATG8 by cleaving it,suggesting that GW3a may be involved in the assembly of autophagosomes and starch degradation in plants.The haplotype analysis of GW3a showed functional differences between indica and japonica rice.Taken together,we conclude that GW3a is expressed in the autophagosome pathway regulating starch metabolism in rice,affecting yield-related traits,such as grain size,grain weight and thousand grain weight(TGW).Our findings also shed new light on autophagy-mediated yield trait regulation,proposing a possible strategy for the genetic improvement of high-yield germplasm in rice.

In the intelligent medical diagnosis area,Artificial Intelligence(AI)’s trustworthiness,reliability,and interpretability are critical,especially in cancer diagnosis.Traditional neural networks,while excellent at processing natural images,often lack interpretability and adaptability when processing high-resolution digital pathological images.This limitation is particularly evident in pathological diagnosis,which is the gold standard of cancer diagnosis and relies on a pathologist’s careful examination and analysis of digital pathological slides to identify the features and progression of the disease.Therefore,the integration of interpretable AI into smart medical diagnosis is not only an inevitable technological trend but also a key to improving diagnostic accuracy and reliability.In this paper,we introduce an innovative Multi-Scale Multi-Branch Feature Encoder(MSBE)and present the design of the CrossLinkNet Framework.The MSBE enhances the network’s capability for feature extraction by allowing the adjustment of hyperparameters to configure the number of branches and modules.The CrossLinkNet Framework,serving as a versatile image segmentation network architecture,employs cross-layer encoder-decoder connections for multi-level feature fusion,thereby enhancing feature integration and segmentation accuracy.Comprehensive quantitative and qualitative experiments on two datasets demonstrate that CrossLinkNet,equipped with the MSBE encoder,not only achieves accurate segmentation results but is also adaptable to various tumor segmentation tasks and scenarios by replacing different feature encoders.Crucially,CrossLinkNet emphasizes the interpretability of the AI model,a crucial aspect for medical professionals,providing an in-depth understanding of the model’s decisions and thereby enhancing trust and reliability in AI-assisted diagnostics.

In order to explore an efficient and green method to deal with nitrobenzene(NB)pollutant,reduced graphene oxide(r GO)as an electron shuttle was applied to enhance the extracellular electron transfer(EET)process of Geobacter sulfurreducens,which was a typical electrochemically active bacteria(EAB).In this study,r GO biosynthesis was achieved via the reduction of graphene oxide(GO)by G.sulfurreducens PCA within 3 days.Also,the r GOPCA combining system completely reduced 50-200μmol/L of NB to aniline as end product within one day.SEM characterization revealed that PCA cells were partly wrapped by rGO,and therefore the distance of electron transfer between strain PCA and r GO material was reduced.Beside,the ID/IGof GO,r GO,and r GO-PCA combining system were 0.990,1.293 and 1.31,respectively.Moreover,highest currents were observed in r GO-PCA-NB as 12.950μA/-12.560μA at -408 m V/156 m V,attributing to the faster electron transfer efficiency in EET process.Therefore,the NB reduction was mainly due to:(I)direct EET process from G.sulfurreducens PCA to NB;(II)r GO served as electron shuttle and accelerated electron transfer to NB,which was the main degradation pathway.Overall,the biosynthesis of r GO via GO reduction by Geobacter promoted the NB removal process,which provided a facile strategy to alleviate the problematic nitroaromatic pollution in the environment.

Study of deep transportation and plugging performance of deformable gel particles in porous media

Deformable gel particles(DGPs) possess the capability of deep profile control and flooding. However, the deep migration behavior and plugging mechanism along their path remain unclear. Breakage, an inevitable phenomenon during particle migration, significantly impacts the deep plugging effect. Due to the complexity of the process, few studies have been conducted on this subject. In this paper, we conducted DGP flow experiments using a physical model of a multi-point sandpack under various injection rates and particle sizes. Particle size and concentration tests were performed at each measurement point to investigate the transportation behavior of particles in the deep part of the reservoir. The residual resistance coefficient and concentration changes along the porous media were combined to analyze the plugging performance of DGPs. Furthermore, the particle breakage along their path was revealed by analyzing the changes in particle size along the way. A mathematical model of breakage and concentration changes along the path was established. The results showed that the passage after breakage is a significant migration behavior of particles in porous media. The particles were reduced to less than half of their initial size at the front of the porous media. Breakage is an essential reason for the continuous decreases in particle concentration, size, and residual resistance coefficient. However, the particles can remain in porous media after breakage and play a significant role in deep plugging. Higher injection rates or larger particle sizes resulted in faster breakage along the injection direction, higher degrees of breakage, and faster decreases in residual resistance coefficient along the path. These conditions also led to a weaker deep plugging ability. Smaller particles were more evenly retained along the path, but more particles flowed out of the porous media, resulting in a poor deep plugging effect. ObjectiveTo provide comprehensive evidence for the anti-cancer cachexia effect of Jianpi Decoction(JP)and to explore its mechanism of anti-cancer cachexia.MethodsA mouse model of colon cancer(CT26)-induced cancer cachexia(CC)was used to investigate the anti-CC effect of JP combined with medroxyprogesterone acetate(MPA).Thirty-six mice were equally divided into 6 groups:normal control,CC,MPA(100 mg·kg^(−1)·d^(−1)),MPA+low-dose(20 mg·kg^(−1)·d^(−1))JP(L-JP),MPA+medium-dose(30 mg·kg^(−1)·d^(−1))JP(M-JP),and MPA+high-dose(40 mg·kg^(−1)·d^(−1))JP(H-JP)groups.After successful modeling,the mice were administered by gavage for 11 d.The body weight and tumor volume were measured and recorded every 2 d starting on the 8th day after implantation.The liver,heart,spleen,lung,kidney,tumor and gastrocnemius muscle of mice were collected and weighed.The pathological changes of the tumor was observed,and the cross-sectional area of the gastrocnemius muscle was calculated.The protein expressions of STAT3 and E3 ubiquitinase in the gastrocnemius muscle were measured by Western blot.In addition,an in vitro C2C12 myotube formation model was established to investigate the role of JP in hindering dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy.In vitro experiments were divided into control,model,and JP serum groups.After 2-d administration,microscopic photographs were taken and myotube diameters were calculated.Western blot was performed to measure the protein expressions of STAT3 and E3 ubiquitinase.ResultsJP combined with MPA restored tumor-induced weight loss(P<0.05,vs.CC)and muscle fiber size(P<0.01,vs.CC).Mechanistically,JP reduced the expression of atrophy-related proteins MuRF1 and MAFbx in tumor-induced muscle atrophy in vivo(P<0.05,vs.CC).In addition,JP reduced the expression of atrophy-related proteins MuRF1 and MAFbx and p-STAT3 phosphorylation(P<0.05 or P<0.01 vs.model group)in C2C12 myotubes treated with dexamethasone in vitro.ConclusionsAdministration of JP combined with MPA restores tumor-induced cachexia conditions.In addition,the

Background:According to clinical practice guidelines,transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)is the standard treatment modality for patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Early prediction of treatment response can help patients choose a reasonable treatment plan.This study aimed to investigate the value of the radiomic-clinical model in predicting the efficacy of the first TACE treatment for HCC to prolong patient survival.Methods:A total of 164 patients with HCC who underwent the first TACE from January 2017 to September 2021 were analyzed.The tumor response was assessed by modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors(mRECIST),and the response of the first TACE to each session and its correlation with overall survival were evaluated.The radiomic signatures associated with the treatment response were identified by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO),and four machine learning models were built with different types of regions of interest(ROIs)(tumor and corresponding tissues)and the model with the best performance was selected.The predictive performance was assessed with receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves and calibration curves.Results:Of all the models,the random forest(RF)model with peritumor(+10 mm)radiomic signatures had the best performance[area under ROC curve(AUC)=0.964 in the training cohort,AUC=0.949 in the validation cohort].The RF model was used to calculate the radiomic score(Rad-score),and the optimal cutoff value(0.34)was calculated according to the Youden’s index.Patients were then divided into a high-risk group(Rad-score>0.34)and a low-risk group(Rad-score≤0.34),and a nomogram model was successfully established to predict treatment response.The predicted treatment response also allowed for significant discrimination of Kaplan-Meier curves.Multivariate Cox regression identified six independent prognostic factors for overall survival,including male[hazard ratio(HR)=0.500,95%confidence interval(CI):0.260–0.962,P=0.038],alpha-fetoprotein(HR=
