An integrated approach to evaluating the coupling coordination degree between low-carbon development and air quality in Chinese cities

Collaborative governance between ecological environment and climate change is a novel signature in China's policy agenda. However, such coordination remains understudied, especially at the local level. Using the principal component analysis, entropy evaluation methods, and the Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM), we evaluated the level of coordination between carbon and air quality mitigation from 34 low-carbon pilot cities in China. We also illustrated the mechanism and policy formation that leads to different coupling patterns at the local level using three case studies. We found that most pilot cities perform a medium level of coupling coordination between low carbon development and air quality. The result reveals that most low-carbon pilot cities score relatively well in low-carbon development. Further, there is a significant cleavage in air quality between cities in the North and those in the South, indicating pilot cities in the South coordinate better than those in the North. In particular, pilot programs in the Southwest and Southeast coastal region perform well in collaborative governance, while the Beijing−Tianjin−Hebei region is rated poorly because of the gap between air quality and low carbon development. Also, we found that the same low-carbon policy might have heterogeneous effects on different air pollutants and across different regions. The local government should adopt low-carbon development policies that address local level specific environmental and economic conditions to maximize their air pollution mitigation benefits.

Removal of pharmaceutical in a biogenic/chemical manganese oxide system driven by manganese-oxidizing bacteria with humic acids as sole carbon source

Bioaugmented sand filtration has attracted considerable attention because it can effectively remove contaminants in drinking water without additional chemical reagent addition.In this study,a synthesized chemical manganese dioxide (MnO_(2)) -coated quartz sand(MnQS) and biogenic manganese oxide (BioMnOx) composite system was proposed to simultaneously remove typical pharmaceutical contaminants and Mn_(2)+.We demonstrated a manganese-oxidizing bacterium,Pseudomonas sp.QJX-1,could oxidize Mn_(2)+to generate BioMnOxusing humic acids (HA) as sole carbon source.The coaction of MnQS,QJX-1,and the generated BioMnOxin simultaneously removing caffeine and Mn_(2)+in the presence of HA was evaluated.We found a synergistic effect between them.MnQS and BioMnOxtogether significantly increased the caffeine removal efficiency from 32.8%(MnQS alone) and 21.5%(BioMnOxalone) to 61.2%.Meanwhile,Mn_(2)+leaked from MnQS was rapidly oxidized by QJX-1 to regenerate reactive BioMnOx,which was beneficial for continuous contaminant removal and system stability.Different degradation intermediates of caffeine oxidized by MnQS and BioMnOxwere detected by LC-QTOF-MS analysis,which implied that caffeine was oxidized by a different pathway.Overall,this work promotes the potential application of bioaugmented sand filtration in pharmaceutical removal in the presence of natural organic matter in drinking water.

Thermodynamic conventions suffer from describing dynamical distinctions,especially when the structural and energetic changes induced by rare events are insignificant.By using the ensemble theory in the trajectory space,we present a statistical approach to address this problem.Rather than spatial particle-particle interaction which dominates thermodynamics,the temporal correlation of events dominates the dynamics.The zeros of dynamic partition function mark phase transitions in the space-time,i.e.,dynamic phase transition(DPT),as Yang and Lee formulate traditional phase transitions,and hence determine dynamic phases on both sides of the zeros.Analogous to the role of temperature(pressure) as thermal(mechanical) potential,we interpret the controlling variable of DPT,i.e., dynamic field,as the dynamical potential.These findings offer possibility towards a unified picture of phase and phase transition.

Buckling optimization of curvilinear fiber-reinforced composite structures using a parametric level set method

Owing to their excellent performance and large design space,curvilinear fiber-reinforced composite structures have gained considerable attention in engineering fields such as aerospace and automobile.In addition to the stiffness and strength of such structures,their stability also needs to be taken into account in the design.This study proposes a level-set-based optimization framework for maximizing the buckling load of curvilinear fiber-reinforced composite structures.In the proposed method,the contours of the level set function are used to represent fiber paths.For a composite laminate with a certain number of layers,one level set function is defined by radial basis functions and expansion coefficients for each layer.Furthermore,the fiber angle at an arbitrary point is the tangent orientation of the contour through this point.In the finite element of buckling,the stiffness and geometry matrices of an element are related to the fiber angle at the element centroid.This study considers the parallelism constraint for fiber paths.With the sensitivity calculation of the objective and constraint functions,the method of moving asymptotes is utilized to iteratively update all the expansion coefficients regarded as design variables.Two numerical examples under different boundary conditions are given to validate the proposed approach.Results show that the optimized curved fiber paths tend to be parallel and equidistant regardless of whether the composite laminates contain holes or not.Meanwhile,the buckling resistance of the final design is significantly improved.

A new liquid membrane diffusion model for characterizing the adsorption kinetics of europium by using a continuous measurement of adsorption platform

To explore the kinetic adsorption under continuous and nonequilibrium states, an integration of continuous measurement and adsorption platform kinetics method was proposed, which was initially called the ICM-AP kinetics method, and a corresponding kinetic adsorption experimental method was developed. Adsorption experiments of europium(Eu) on Ca-bentonite,Na-bentonite, and the D231 cation exchange resin were performed using the ICM-AP kinetics method and continuous measurements. Because the kinetic experimental results observed in this study were different from those of traditional batch adsorption data, pseudo-first-order or pseudo-second-order kinetic models were unsuitable for fitting the experimental data.Hence, a liquid membrane diffusion(LMD) model was developed based on the assumption of simultaneous adsorption/desorption to discuss the mechanism of kinetic adsorption. The kinetic adsorption mechanism was also studied by using XPS.The results indicated that the proposed adsorption model can fit the experimental data more suitably, and the adsorption/desorption behaviors of Eu on bentonite and the D231 resin were simultaneously observed, suggesting that the adsorption kinetics of Eu(Ⅲ) was mainly dominated by hydrated Eu(Ⅲ) ions on the liquid membrane.

PV Array Reconfiguration Based on the Shaded Cells'Number for PV Modules

Reconfiguration can increase the output power for a PV array under partial shadows.However,traditional reconfiguration methods consider the PV module as either totally shaded or totally unshaded,and module-based simulation is employed to evaluate the reconfiguration effect.Actually,there is an unneglectable error when treating a partially shaded PV module as totally shaded,through using a more accurate cellbased simulation.Based on the analysis of the determinant factors on MPPs’power of a PV array,a new reconfiguration method is proposed based on the exact partial shadow shape projected on the PV array.This method restructures the electrical connection among PV modules of a PV array according to the shaded cells’number(SCN)of every PV module.Extensive cell-based simulations are carried out on a PV array to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SCN-based reconfiguration method.Comprehensive comparisons among various reconfiguration methods and shadow distributions clearly show its suitability to different irregular shadows and its superiority in PV output power enhancement.

Many natural fibers are lightweight and display remarkable strength and toughness.These properties originate from the fibers’hierarchical structures,assembled from the molecular to macroscopic scale.The natural spinning systems that produce such fibers are highly energy efficient,inspiring researchers to mimic these processes to realize robust artificial spinning.Significant developments have been achieved in recent years toward the preparation of high-performance bio-based fibers.Beyond excellent mechanical properties,bio-based fibers can be functionalized with a series of new features,thus expanding their sophisticated applications in smart textiles,electronic sensors,and biomedical engineering.Here,recent progress in the construction of bio-based fibers is outlined.Various bioinspired spinning methods,strengthening strategies for mechanically strong fibers,and the diverse applications of these fibers are discussed.Moreover,challenges in reproducing the mechanical performance of natural systems and understanding their dynamic spinning process are presented.Finally,a perspective on the development of biological fibers is given.

Stabilization of an uncertain multiple-oscillator system

For a multiple-oscillator system that is subject to the uncertain gains ranging within compact sets,this paper presents a constructive stabilization design.Motivated by nested-saturation control methods,a nested controller that contains multiplicative coefficients is directly designed,and these coefficients are then determined in the stability analysis.By skillfully making transformations,elaborately constructing Lyapunov functions,and using an M-matrix principle,the stability analysis leads to the explicit inequality condition that is expressed by directly using the system parameters.

PEMFC Identification Based on a Fractional-Order Hammerstein State-Space Model with ADE-BH Optimization

Considering the fractional-order and nonlinear characteristics of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFC),a fractional-order subspace identification method based on the ADE-BH optimization algorithm is proposed to establish a fractional-order Hammerstein state-space model of PEMFCs.Herein,a Hammerstein model is constructed by connecting a linear module and a nonlinear module in series to precisely depict the nonlinear property of the PEMFC.During the modeling process,fractional-order theory is combined with subspace identification,and a Poisson filter is adopted to enable multi-order derivability of the data.A variable memory method is introduced to reduce computation time without losing precision.Additionally,to improve the optimization accuracy and avoid obtaining locally optimum solutions,a novel ADEBH algorithm is employed to optimize the unknown parameters in the identification method.In this algorithm,the Euclidean distance serves as the theoretical basis for updating the target vector in the absorption-generation operation of the black hole(BH)algorithm.Finally,simulations demonstrate that the proposed model has small output error and high accuracy,indicating that the model can accurately describe the electrical characteristics of the PEMFC process.

Productive Traits and Triploid Rate Stability in Triploidy-Induced ‘Haida No. 2’ Strain of the Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas

In order to evaluate the effects of triploidy induction on a selected strain‘Haida No.2’of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas,which is characterized with golden shell color and high growth rate,the growth,survival rate and stability of triploid rate were analyzed at different development stages in the present study.Three different conditions inhibiting the release of polar body Ⅱ or polar body Ⅰ were tested:(A)Cytochalasin-B(CB),0.5mg L^(−1) at 10min post-insemination for 15 min;(B)CB,0.5mg L^(−1)at 15 min postinsemination for 20 min;and(C)CB,0.7mg L^(−1),at 15 min post-insemination for 20 min.The triploidy induction treatments significantly reduced the D-larvae and survival rates at the larvae stage but not at the juvenile and adult stages.Triploid rate dramatically decreased at the larval stage and did not significantly change at the juvenile and adult stages.Regarding the stability of the triploid rate,there was a significant difference between the three treatment groups.Larvae from the treatment A and control groups exhibited higher growth rates in shell height than those from the other two treatment groups at day 27.Triploid juveniles and adults from the treatment A group exhibited a higher wet weight than diploids from the control group and triploids from the other treatment groups.Triploidy induction did not affect the shell color of the progeny.The results obtained in the study demonstrate that triploidy induction has the potential to be used to increase the production of C.gigas variety‘Haida No.2’without modifying its golden shell color.
