A Sensitivity Study of Arctic Ice-Ocean Heat Exchange to the Three-Equation Boundary Condition Parametrization in CICE6

In this study,we perform a stand-alone sensitivity study using the Los Alamos Sea ice model version 6(CICE6)to investigate the model sensitivity to two Ice-Ocean(IO)boundary condition approaches.One is the two-equation approach that treats the freezing temperature as a function of the ocean mixed layer(ML)salinity,using two equations to parametrize the IO heat exchanges.Another approach uses the salinity of the IO interface to define the actual freezing temperature,so an equation describing the salt flux at the IO interface is added to the two-equation approach,forming the so-called three-equation approach.We focus on the impact of the three-equation boundary condition on the IO heat exchange and associated basal melt/growth of the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean.Compared with the two-equation simulation,our three-equation simulation shows a reduced oceanic turbulent heat flux,weakened basal melt,increased ice thickness,and reduced sea surface temperature(SST)in the Arctic.These impacts occur mainly at the ice edge regions and manifest themselves in summer.Furthermore,in August,we observed a downward turbulent heat flux from the ice to the ocean ML in two of our three-equation sensitivity runs with a constant heat transfer coefficient(0.006),which caused heat divergence and congelation at the ice bottom.Additionally,the influence of different combinations of heat/salt transfer coefficients and thermal conductivity in the three-equation approach on the model simulated results is assessed.The results presented in this study can provide insight into sea ice model sensitivity to the three-equation IO boundary condition for coupling the CICE6 to climate models.

With the increasing demand for higher energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), it is imperative to develop high-capacity electrode materials [1–4]. Due to the unique electrochemical Li-alloying reactions, Li-alloys offer high theoretical capacity, especially lithiumrich phase alloys, which exceeds the theoretical capacity of graphite anodes [5–7]. Phase-transition, which significantly influences lithium alloy reactions, determines high voltage hysteresis,low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and short cycling life [8,9].

Effects of Total Saponins from Dioscorea Nipponica Makino on Monosodium Urate-Induced M1-Polarized Macrophages through Arachidonic Acid Signaling Pathway:An in vitro Study

Objective To investigate and reveal the underlying mechanism of the effect of total saponins from Dioscoreae nipponica Makino(TSDN)on the arachidonic acid pathway in monosodium urate(MSU)crystal-induced M1-polarized macrophages.Methods M1 polarization of RAW264.7 cells were induced by 1µg/mL lipopolysaccharide(LPS).The methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide method was then used to screen the concentration of TSDN.MSU(500µg/mL)was used to induce the gouty arthritis model.Afterwards,10µg/L TSDN and 8µmol/L celecoxib,which was used as a positive control,were added to the above LPS and MSU-induced cells for 24 h.The mRNA and protein expressions of cyclooxygenase(COX)2,5-lipoxygenase(5-LOX),microsomal prostaglandin E synthase derived eicosanoids(mPGES)-1,leukotriene B(LTB)4,cytochrome P450(CYP)4A,and prostaglandin E_(2)(PGE_(2))were tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting,respectively.The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to test the contents of M1 markers,including inducible nitric oxid synthase(NOS)2,CD80,and CD86.Results TSDN inhibited the proliferation of M1 macrophages and decreased both the mRNA and protein expressions of COX2,5-LOX,CYP4A,LTB4,and PGE_(2)(P<0.01)while increased the mRNA and protein expression of mPGES-1(P<0.05 or P<0.01).TSDN could also significantly decrease the contents of NOS2,CD80,and CD86(P<0.01).Conclusion TSDN has an anti-inflammation effect on gouty arthritis in an in vitro model by regulating arachidonic acid signaling pathway.

The Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Change in CMIP6’s Historical Simulations

This study assesses sea ice thickness(SIT)from the historical run of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6).The SIT reanalysis from the Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System(PIOMAS)product is chosen as the validation reference data.Results show that most models can adequately reproduce the climatological mean,seasonal cycle,and long-term trend of Arctic Ocean SIT during 1979-2014,but significant inter-model spread exists.Differences in simulated SIT patterns among the CMIP6 models may be related to model resolution and sea ice model components.By comparing the climatological mean and trend for SIT among all models,the Arctic SIT change in different seas during 1979-2014 is evaluated.Under the scenario of historical radiative forcing,the Arctic SIT will probably exponentially decay at-18%(10 yr)-1 and plausibly reach its minimum(equilibrium)of 0.47 m since the 2070s.

Simulations and Projections of Winter Sea Ice in the Barents Sea by CMIP6 Climate Models

Dramatic changes in the sea ice characteristics in the Barents Sea have potential consequences for the weather and climate systems of mid-latitude continents,Arctic ecosystems,and fisheries,as well as Arctic maritime navigation.Simulations and projections of winter sea ice in the Barents Sea based on the latest 41 climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)are investigated in this study.Results show that most CMIP6 models overestimate winter sea ice in the Barents Sea and underestimate its decreasing trend.The discrepancy is mainly attributed to the simulation bias towards an overly weak ocean heat transport through the Barents Sea Opening and the underestimation of its increasing trend.The methods of observation-based model selection and emergent constraint were used to project future winter sea ice changes in the Barents Sea.Projections indicate that sea ice in the Barents Sea will continue to decline in a warming climate and that a winter ice-free Barents Sea will occur for the first time during 2042-2089 under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 585(SSP5-8.5).Even in the observation-based selected models,the sensitivity of winter sea ice in the Barents Sea to global warming is weaker than observed,indicating that a winter ice-free Barents Sea might occur earlier than projected by the CMIP6 simulations.

CuInS_(2)quantum-dot-modified g-C_(3)N_(4)S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for hydrogen production and tetracycline degradation

CuInS_(2)quantum-dot(CIS QD)-modified g-C_(3)N_(4)(CN)catalysts(CIS/CN)were prepared with the aid of an in-situ growth process.The as-obtained photocatalysts were explored by measuring their crystallinity,surface morphology,binding energy and light absorption activity.The photocatalytic efficiency of the pho-tocatalysts was evaluated through photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production and tetracycline(TC)antibiotic degradation under the simulated solar light and visible light respectively.The optimized sample(10CIS/CN)showed the best photocatalytic activity:producing 102.4μmol g^(-1)h^(-1)of hydrogen in 1 h,or degrading 52.16%of TC in 120 min,which were respectively 48 or 3.4 times higher than the photocatalytic activity of CN itself.The enhancement in the efficiency of the composite system was prin-cipally accredited to the enlargement of light absorption,the more effective in charge transfer and the dropping of the charge carrier pair recombination through a formed S-scheme heterojunctional interface.This work is an effort to adjust CN-based polysulfide QD for speedy photocatalysis.The enriched photo-catalytic activity grants a new sense for adjusting the optical properties of CN.

Graphene-supported cobalt nanoparticles used to activate SiO_(2)-based anode for lithium-ion batteries

Although SiO_(2)-based anode is a strong competitor to supersede graphite anode for lithium-ion batteries,it still has problems such as low electrochemical activity, enormous loss of active lithium, and serious volume expansion. In order to solve these problems, we used a graphene network loaded with cobalt metal nanoparticles(rGO-Co) to coat SiO_(2) porous hollow spheres(SiO_(2)@rGO-Co). The construction of porous hollow structure and graphene network can shorten the lithium-ion(Li^(+)) diffusion distance and enhance the conductivity of the composite, which improves the electrochemical activity of SiO_(2) effectively. They also alleviate the volume expansion of the anode in the cycling process. Moreover,nano-scale cobalt metal particles dispersed on graphene catalyze the conversion reaction of SiO_(2) and activate the locked Li+in Li_(2)O through a reversible reaction, which improves the charge and discharge capacity of the anode. The capacity of SiO_(2)@rGO-Co reaches 370.4 m Ah/g after 100 cycles at 0.1 A/g,which is 6.19 times the capacity of pure SiO_(2)(59.8 mAh/g) under the same circumstance. What is more,its structure also exhibits excellent cycle stability, with a volume expansion rate of only 13.0% after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A/g.

With pursuing high energy density batteries,traditional graphite anode could be unable to meet current needs[1-4].The high-capacity anodes have attracted increasing attention,such as lithium anodes and alloy-type anodes[5-8].Silicon anode,as a high-capacity alloy-type anode(3579 mAh/g),has attracted great attention[9].However,due to its unique electrochemical mechanism,significant changes in volume and morphology during charge/discharge process could lead to the decrease in cycling stability[9,10].Therefore,it is still challenging for silicon anode in tackling volume expansion and unstable interfaces.

Link between the Barents Oscillation and Recent Boreal Winter Cooling over the Asian Midlatitudes

The link between boreal winter cooling over the midlatitudes of Asia and the Barents Oscillation(BO) since the late 1980s is discussed in this study, based on five datasets. Results indicate that there is a large-scale boreal winter cooling during 1990–2015 over the Asian midlatitudes, and that it is a part of the decadal oscillations of long-term surface air temperature(SAT)anomalies. The SAT anomalies over the Asian midlatitudes are significantly correlated with the BO in boreal winter. When the BO is in its positive phase, anomalously high sea level pressure over the Barents region, with a clockwise wind anomaly,causes cold air from the high latitudes to move over the midlatitudes of Asia, resulting in anomalous cold conditions in that region. Therefore, the recent increasing trend of the BO has contributed to recent winter cooling over the Asian midlatitudes.

Geographical discrimination of Cyclocarya paliurus tea for origin traceability based on multielement analysis by ICP-OES and chemometrics multivariate

Objective: This paper focused on the geographical discrimination of Cyclocarya paliurus tea for origin traceability based on multielement analysis by ICP-OES and chemometrics multivariate.Methods: In this study, eleven trace element concentrations were determined by ICP-OES and processed by multivariate statistical analysis.Results: Based on ANOVA, the mean concentrations of 10 elements except Co differed significantly among six origins. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that 11 pairs of elements have a positive significant correlation and 12 pairs have a negative significant correlation. The geographical origins were effectively differentiated using the eleven elements combined with PCA. And the S-LDA model offered a 100%differentiation rate.Conclusion: The overall results suggested that the combination of multielement analysis by ICP-OES and chemometrics multivariate could trace the geographical origins of tea. And the paper can provide reference for quality control and quality evaluation of C. paliurus in the future.
