Dynamic Cell Modeling for Accurate SOC Estimation in Autonomous Electric Vehicles

This paper presents findings on dynamic cell modeling for state-of-charge (SOC) estimation in an autonomous electric vehicle (AEV). The studied cells are Lithium-Ion Polymer-based with a nominal capacity of around 8 Ah, optimized for power-needy applications. The AEV operates in a harsh environment with rate requirements up to ±25C and highly dynamic rate profiles, unlike portable-electronic applications with constant power output and fractional C rates. SOC estimation methods effective in portable electronics may not suffice for the AEV. Accurate SOC estimation necessitates a precise cell model. The proposed SOC estimation method utilizes a detailed Kalman-filtering approach. The cell model must include SOC as a state in the model state vector. Multiple cell models are presented, starting with a simple one employing “Coulomb counting” as the state equation and Shepherd’s rule as the output equation, lacking prediction of cell relaxation dynamics. An improved model incorporates filter states to account for relaxation and other dynamics in closed-circuit cell voltage, yielding better performance. The best overall results are achieved with a method combining nonlinear autoregressive filtering and dynamic radial basis function networks. The paper includes lab test results comparing physical cells with model predictions. The most accurate models obtained have an RMS estimation error lower than the quantization noise floor expected in the battery-management-system design. Importantly, these models enable precise SOC estimation, allowing the vehicle controller to utilize the battery pack’s full operating range without overcharging or undercharging concerns.

Vibration Analysis of Frame Structure with Soil-Structure Interaction

A common design practice for dynamic loading assumes the frame fixed at their bases. In reality, the supporting soil medium allows movement to some extent due to its property to deform. This may decrease the overall stiffness of the structural system and may increase the natural period of the system. The effect of soil flexibility is suggested to be accounted through consideration of springs which have specified stiffness and soil half space. Results show that the dynamic response of frame structure to vibrations is due to applied dynamic load and is highly dependent on the soil type and the method of modeling soil structure interaction. The response of frame structure under dynamic load is higher in case of linear discrete independent spring as comparing with perfect bond cases. Except the response of frame in case of piles embedded in soft clay, half space are higher than frame with piles and linear elastic spring due to the interaction between the frequencies of applied load and frequencies of frame structure. Also, result showed that it is important to include the soil-structure interaction in the analysis of the system in order to correctly simulate the dynamic problem for controlling on the resonance phenomena.

Finocyl Grain Design and Optimization Using Sequential Quadratic Programming

Design technique of 3D Finocyl grain configuration for Solid Rocket Motors, including its performance prediction and optimization is discussed. In doing so, the design objectives and constraints are set, geometric parameters of Finocyl grain are identified, and performance prediction parameters are calculated, thereafter the preliminary design is completed and optimal design is reached. For every grain design, it is necessary that the minimum possible mass of propellant is used to produce the required thrust within a certain limit of burning time. By using this technique of design and optimization, the vital parameter of propellant mass is optimized to its minimum value, yet vital parameter of thrust is attained in the required burning time with the fixed length and diameter of motor. Especially a geometrical model of grain configuration is developed by using various combinations of ellipsoid, cone, cylinder, sphere, torus and inclined plane. With the diameter of the motor fixed, the Finocyl Grain geometry totally depends on sixteen independent variables. Each of these variables has a bearing on explicit characteristic of Finocyl grain design and optimization. Changing the value of each of these variables brings significant effects on the performance. Due to such attributes of Finocyl grain configuration, compromises will result. Overall optimal design is ensured through assigning and analyzing a suitable range of geometric parameters satisfying the requirements of minimum mass of propellant and ensuring sound values for internal ballistic parameters while remaining within the design constraints of thrust, burning time, length and diameter of chamber case.

Petrogenesis of Middle Triassic Volcaniclastic Rocks from Balochistan,Pakistan:Implications for the Break-Up of Gondwanaland

Basaltic volcanic conglomerates near the Wulgai village in Balochistan occur in the undivided sedimentary rock unit of the Bagh complex which is the mélange zone beneath the Muslim Bagh ophiolite. The presence of Middle Triassic grey radiolarian chert within the upper and lower horizon of the conglomerates suggests that the lavas, from which these conglomerates were principally derived, were eroded and re-deposited in the Middle Triassic. The Wulgai conglomerate contains several textural and mineralogical varieties of volcanic rocks, such as porphyritic, glomerophyric, intersertal and vitrophyric basalts. The main minerals identified in these samples are augite, olivine, plagioclase（An35–78） leucite and nosean, with apatite ilmenite, magnetite and hematite occurring as accessory minerals. These rocks are mildly to strongly-alkaline with low Mg~# and low Cr, Ni and Co contents suggesting that their parent magma had undergone considerable fractionation prior to eruption. Trace element-enriched mantle-normalized patterns with marked positive Nb anomalies are consistent with 10%–15% melting of an enriched mantle source in a within-plate tectonic setting. It is proposed that this Middle Triassic intra-plate volcanism may represent mantle plume-derived melts related to the Late Triassic rifting of micro-continental blocks（including Afghan, Iran, Karakorum and Lhasa） from the northern margin of Gondwana.

Analysis of a Recent Biofilter Model for Toluene Biodegradation

This paper investigates and provides a critical analysis of the toluene biofilter model developed by Li and De Visscher. The model simulation results have been reproduced and compared with several sets of experimental data from literature. Three different model variations are considered: model with no substrate inhibition, with substrate inhibition, and with air flow rate modification. A sensitivity analysis has been performed on model to study the effect of important parameters on the removal efficiency. Model limitations and improvements have been highlighted.

Shah Latif and Shaikh Ayaz： A comparative study of the poetic thought Artist as an agent of change

This paper is charismatic study of Shah Latif and Shaikh Ayaz concerning the role of the artist in society. They assumed that literature and artist bear enigmatic wallop and can bring drastic changes through the thwack of the art. Shaikh Ayaz emerged as an impressive poet about 3 centuries after Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai--the great Sindhi poet of all times. Now Shah Latif is recognized in the whole world beyond geographic and time limits, and his thought have been studied from various aspects and angles through his poetry. Similarly, Shaikh Ayaz is known not only for his thematic poetry, but also his references of countless poets; philosophers and heroes of the world have given his poetry an international look. The description of the people, land and customs of Sindh has got special room in the poetry of the 2 poets, placed quite distantly time-wise. Shaikh Ayaz has tried to carry the thought of Shah Latif in his poetry in terms of concepts, trends and needs of his own time. To study the thought of the bards, the authors have taken a fold tale ＂Sorath＂ into consideration, which they have manipulated to assert the role of the artist. Beejal, the protagonist of the poem, succeeds to get the head of the famous king Rai Dyach through the clout of his music. Shah and Ayaz have attempted to demonstrate that if artist can take the life of an emperor by employing his art, then he can perform the role of an agent as well as root out the evils prevailing in society. Through objective approach, an artist can change the shape of the universe, thus, they exalt the position of the artist and readers are compelled to meditate upon their sagacious notes.

Megasporogenesis and Megagametogenesis in Autotetraploid Indica/Japonica Rice Hybrid

Autotetraploid indic, a/japonica rice hybrid combines both the advantages of polyploidy and the heterosis between indica and japonica rice. Embryo sac abortion is an important factor influencing spikelet fertility in autotetraploid dce hybrid. To clarify the cytological mechanism of embryo sac abortion, the megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis in an autotetraploid japonicaAndica hybrid were examined by the whole-mount eosin B-staining confocal laser scanning microscopy （WE-CLSM） technique. Abnormalities were observed from the megasporocyte stage to the mature embryo sac stage. The degeneration of the tetrad cells and the functional megaspore was the characteristic of abnormalities during megasporogenesis. Abnormal small embryo sacs and disordered number of nuclei were frequently observed during embryo sac development. Some interesting phenomena, such as two functional megaspores, the diplospory-like megasporocyte, and five-nucleate embryo sac were found. The abnormalities that occurred during female gametophyte development resulted in more than five types of abnormal embryo sacs （i.e. embryo sac degeneration, embryo sac without female germ unit, embryo sac without egg apparatus, embryo sac with abnormal polar nuclei and abnormal small embryo sac） in autotetraploid japonica/ndica hybdd. Embryo sac fertility was lower in diploid japonica/ndica hybdd than in autotetraploid japonicaAndica hybrid although many abnormal phenomena were observed in autotetraploid hybrid.

Conceptual Design Architecture Modeling and Simulation for Boost Phase Ballistic Missile Defense

The design review, simulation and validation of a Conceptual Design Architecture (CDA) for Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) are presented. An intercept system that contains a Ground Based Interceptor (GBI) and its guidance sensors (both radar and infrared) are simulated. 3D model using MATLAB is developed for a multistage target with ascent phase acceleration profile that depends on total mass, propellant mass and the specific impulse in the gravity field. The radar cross section (RCS) and infrared radiation (IR) of the target structure is estimated as a function of the flight profile. The Kill Vehicle (KV) design is examined as a function of the KV mass, acceleration capability, aimpoint offset and impact energy to destroy the target. The aim of the CDA is to: detect the launch of a threat ballistic missile, determine whether the detected object is a threat,define the characteristics of the threat ballistic missile, develop a firing solution to negate the threat ballistic missile, engage the threat ballistic missile, and assess the effectiveness for ballistic missile intercept. The architecture is modeled in Matlab.

Topology Optimization for Manufacturable Configuration Design of Aircraft Tail Rib

A methodology is implemented to find the optimum reduced weight configuration design of an operating structure of a civil aircraft vertical tail fin. FE （finite element） based topology optimization is executed to find the optimum material distribution of initial design space of rib by maximizing the stiffness. Loads pertinent to the operating and ground conditions are estimated and applied, considering the orientation of structural assembly members and built-in supports offered in the main structure. Manufacturing constraints are incorporated into the optimization loop to generate pragmatic and manufacturable design configuration. The topologically optimized configuration is then converted to CAD viable design through data reduction and smoothing by converting to ISO-surfaces. A methodology is also devised to modify the topological optimized voids and material layout precisely with splines and fillets to construct manufacturable features and avoid stress concentrations. The resulting novel design proposal is then analyzed and validated against stipulated loads, constraints and other design needs. Results validate the new design proposal as more reliable, having reduced weight and enhanced structural performance.
