BACKGROUND Extreme heat exposure is a growing health problem,and the effects of heat on the gastrointestinal(GI)tract is unknown.This study aimed to assess the incidence of GI symptoms associated with heatstroke and its impact on outcomes.AIM To assess the incidence of GI symptoms associated with heatstroke and its impact on outcomes.METHODS Patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)due to heatstroke were included from 83 centres.Patient history,laboratory results,and clinically relevant outcomes were recorded at ICU admission and daily until up to day 15,ICU discharge,or death.GI symptoms,including nausea/vomiting,diarrhoea,flatulence,and bloody stools,were recorded.The characteristics of patients with heatstroke concomitant with GI symptoms were described.Multivariable regression analyses were performed to determine significant predictors of GI symptoms.RESULTS A total of 713 patients were included in the final analysis,of whom 132(18.5%)patients had at least one GI symptom during their ICU stay,while 26(3.6%)suffered from more than one symptom.Patients with GI symptoms had a significantly higher ICU stay compared with those without.The mortality of patients who had two or more GI symptoms simultaneously was significantly higher than that in those with one GI symptom.Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that older patients with a lower GCS score on admission were more likely to experience GI symptoms.CONCLUSION The GI manifestations of heatstroke are common and appear to impact clinically relevant hospitalization outcomes.

Curve interpolation with B-spline is widely used in various areas. This problem is classic and recently raised in application scenario with new requirements such as path planning following the tangential vector field under certified error in CNC machining. This paper proposes an algorithm framework to solve Hausdorff distance certified cubic B-spline interpolation problem with or without tangential direction constraints. The algorithm has two stages: The first stage is to find the initial cubic B-spine fitting curve which satisfies the Hausdorff distance constraint;the second stage is to set up and solve the optimization models with certain constraints. Especially, the sufficient conditions of the global Hausdorff distance control for any error bound are discussed, which can be expressed as a series of linear and quadratic constraints. A simple numerical algorithm to compute the Hausdorff distance between a polyline and its B-spline interpolation curve is proposed to reduce our computation.Experimental results are presented to show the advantages of the proposed algorithms.

This paper experimentally investigates the pressure fluctuation induced by the unsteady attached cavitating flow, with special focus on the quasi-periodic cloud cavitation. A simultaneous sampling method is adopted for the synchronous measurement of the wall pressure signals and the cavitating flow images in a convergent-divergent channel. The results show that the pressure fluctuation is composed of three parts, the flow noise, the low-frequency fluctuation, and the cavity collapse induced impulse, and the pressure evolution of the quasi-periodic cloud cavitation is well consistent with the cavitation evolution. The statistical analysis of the pressure fluctuation shows that, when σ > 1.01, the probability density function (PDF) is nearly in the normal distribution, implying the randomness of the pressure fluctuation, when 0.84 1.01, when σ < 0.84, the PDF becomes narrow and asymmetric. In addition, the variance and the average value of the pressure indicate that the fluctuation intensity increases downstream along the cavity and reaches the maximum at the cavity closure and it also increases with the decrease of the cavitation number. The spectral analysis shows that the low-frequency pressure fluctuations mainly consist of two dominant components, the cavity shedding induced fluctuation and the lock-in fluctuation. The cavity shedding induced frequency decreases with the decrease of the cavitation number but the lock-in frequency is kept nearly constant. According to the spectral analysis of the cavity area fluctuation and the modal analysis of the flow system, the lock-in is possibly caused when the fluctuation frequency of the cavity volume approaches the natural frequency of the flow system.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is as an emerging infectious disease(EID)that has caused the worst public health catastrophe of the 21st century thus far.In terms of impact,the COVID-19 pandemic is second only to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 in modern world history.As of 7 September 2021,there have been 220 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 4.5 million deaths.EIDs pose serious public health and socio-economic risks,and 70%of EIDs originate from wildlife.Preventing development of EIDs such as COVID-19 is a pressing concern.Here,taking the COVID-19 pandemic as an example,we illustrate the disastrous effects of EIDs and assess their emergence and evolution from a One Health perspective.We propose a One Health strategy,centered on‘moving the gates forward’,for EID prevention and control at the human-animal-environment interface.This strategy may be instructive and provide early warnings of EIDs in the future.

Global cavitation and hydrodynamic characteristics of a composite propeller in non-uniform wake

The composite propeller has attracted much interest due to its excellent mechanical properties such as high specific stiffness and high specific strength,hence there is an increasing interest in utilizing the composite materials to improve the hydrodynamic and structural performance of marine propellers.The objective of this paper is to study the cavitation performance of composite propellers based on the unsteady simulation method considering the cavitation-composite structure interaction.The typical cavitation patterns around the composite propeller are studied,which include blade sheet cavitation and tip vortex cavitation.The unsteady flow characteristics of tip vortex cavitation and structural dynamic response of composite propeller are studied,and the mechanism of composite propeller for the cavitation suppression and efficiency improvement is revealed.The results show that compared with rigid propellers,composite propellers have smaller cavity volume and higher propulsion efficiency under the same conditions.The unsteady cavitating flow characteristics under non-uniform wake are periodic,and the phase lag of hydrodynamic coefficients of composite propeller can be observed compared with that of the rigid propeller.The bending-torsional coupling deformation of the composite propeller makes the pressure pulsation of the flow field gentler,which reduces the influence of the cavitation load on the composite propeller.

Biosynthesized semiconductor quantum dots(QDs) have bright fluorescence,adjustable particle sizes,and environmental friendliness,endowing them with convenience and potential for biological applications.Due to the unclear mechanism of the cellular environment on the live-cell synthesis of QDs,it is still difficult to regulate their optical properties.Here,the critical role of the intracellular redox environment in regulating the fluorescence properties of biosynthesized CdSe QDs in Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) has been elucidated.The glutathione peroxidase(GPx) activity directly affects the intracellular H_(2)O_(2) produced in the SeO_(3)^(2-) reduction,which further manipulates the glutathione redox cycle to determine the content of low-valence Seintermediates.As a result,the fluorescence intensity of the synthesized CdSe QDs increases by 60% in the GPx overexpressed cells.The cellular redox potential that is controlled by the GSH redox cycle provides the driving force for the reduction of SeO_(3)^(2-),facilitating the synthesis of CdSe QDs in S.aureus cells.The proposed mechanism of the cellular redox state provides a new perspective for regulating the synthesis of semiconductor nanomaterials in live cells.

Investigation on the dynamic behavior of cloud cavitation around a flexible hydrofoil

The objective of this paper is to investigate the dynamic behavior of cloud cavitating flow around a flexible hydrofoil with experimental and numerical methods.The tightly coupled fluid-structure interaction(FSI)modeling is applied and validated with the experimental data.The Q-criterion andω-criterion are applied to illustrate the interaction between the vortex structures and cavities.The flexibility is seen to result in nose-up twist deformation,causing a reduction of the shedding frequency from an increase in the attached cavity length.Due to the flexibility,the fluctuation of load coefficients of the flexible hydrofoil is larger than that of the rigid hydrofoil.Moreover,the re-entrant jet propagation speed of the flexible hydrofoil is greater than that of the rigid hydrofoil.The shed cloud cavity is observed to be uniform along the flexible hydrofoil span under the combined influence of the strong vibration and the gap flow.

This paper experimentally studies the cavitating fluid-structure interaction of composite hydrofoils with different ply angles.The synchronous measurement system with high-speed camera and for laser Doppler vibrometer(LDV),the feedback pressure regulation system,and the flow rate control system are established.The experimental results of the cavitation evolution show that,compared with the rigid hydrofoil,the composite hydrofoils with+45°ply angle and 0°ply angle accelerate the cavitation inception,and the composite hydrofoil with−45°ply angle delays the cavitation inception.At the same cavitation number,the cloud cavitation of the+45°laminated hydrofoil is the most severe,followed by that of the 0°laminated hydrofoil,and that of the−45°laminated hydrofoil is relatively weak and close to that of the rigid hydrofoil.The analyses of the structural vibration of the composite hydrofoils in different cavitation stages show that the three composite hydrofoils have no significant vibration at the incipient cavitation and the supercavitation,but relatively significant vibration is observed in the sheet and cloud cavitation.The vibration amplitude of the composite hydrofoil with+45°ply angle is the largest,followed by those of the−45°,0°laminated hydrofoils.In the sheet cavitation,the dominant frequencies of the structural vibration velocity of the+45°laminated hydrofoil and the−45°laminated hydrofoil are the first and second modal frequencies,but no explicit dominant frequency is observed for the 0°laminated hydrofoil.In the cloud cavitation,the dominant frequencies of the three composite hydrofoils mainly include the first modal frequency,the second modal frequency,and the cavity shedding frequency.

Investigation of cavitation erosion caused by laser-induced single bubble collapse near alloy coating surface

To investigate the mechanism of cavitation erosion caused by laser-induced single bubble near the surface coating alloy coating material, we utilized a nanosecond resolution photography system based on a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser and conventional industrial camera to carefully observe the transient process of bubble collapse under different conditions. We analyzed the generation of collapse microjets and the emission of collapse shock waves and explored the cavitation erosion characteristics caused by laser-induced single bubble collapse. We discovered that even on surfaces of highly hard and corrosion-resistant alloy coatings, severe cavitation erosion occurred, and there was a phenomenon of mismatch between the cavitation erosion location and the bubble projection position. The intensity of cavitation erosion depended on the energy self-focusing effect of the collapse shockwaves. In the experiments, we also observed the self-focusing phenomenon of collapse shockwaves under different conditions. The self-focusing effect of collapse shockwaves weakened as the distance between the bubble and the material surface increased, which may be the cause of cavitation erosion induced by a laser-induced single bubble.
