When Tony Blair and New Labour came to office in Britain late in the 20th century,John Atkinson Hobson( 1858-1940) was rediscovered and republished. In spite of his prolific work( over 50 books),he had sunk into oblivion. Yet John Maynard Keynes paid tribute to him( T he General T heory of Employment,Interest and Money,1936) and recognized his debt to this"heretic"of economics. Hobson's contribution to the history of economic thought is a major one,thanks to his stimulating analysis of under-consumption. His book Imperialism,A Study( 1902) was Lenin's bedside reading. But Hobson was no socialist: he w as a"N ew Liberal",belonging to a group of theoreticians who thought that classical liberalism had to be changed radically if it was to have any future.

British Multiculturalism and Its Evolution in a Utilitarian Perspective

David Cameron' s speech in Munich(February 2011) has been seen as a U-turn of the British approach to ethnic minorities and diversity(particularly concerning Muslims and South Asians) and a clear rejection of multiculturalism,in the wake of the European terror attacks(Madrid 2004,London 2005).The heyday of multiculturalism is associated to Tony Blair' s Premiership(1997-2007) and more generally to New Labour rule(1997-2010).After defining multiculturalism this paper will try and put it in a historical and philosophical perspective,that is to say as one of the latest offshoots of Utilitarianism within the general framework of Western *** Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill may help understand the notions of tolerance and political freedom that are part and parcel of the multicultural project.

Nature, Reason and Happiness in the Ricardian Socialists

In this article we focus on the making of socialism,of socialist thought in history,in *** four socialists we are going to present in this paper are not so famous as Marx,Engels or even William Morris,but they played an essential role in the birth of socialism in Britain,and they certainly deserve being *** names are Thomas Hodgskin,William Thompson,John Gray and John Francis *** are usually referred to as the‘Ricardian Socialists'.This article will try to examine the underlying philosophy which their economic constructions *** these writers may help understand the notions of nature,reason and happiness that are part and parcel of their socialism thought and their economic thought.
