Effect of TiO_2 Functionalization on Nano-Porous Silicon for Selective Alcohol Sensing at Room Temperature

Room temperature operated sensor for detection of alcohol vapours in low ppm range based on TiO_2 functionalized nano-porous silicon（PSi） is demonstrated. The effect of functionalization by TiO_2 on PSi is investigated using SEM, EDX, Raman spectroscopy, XRD and contact angle measurements. Sensing is accomplished by measuring change in resistance of the sensing layer using Cr-Au inter-digitatedelectrode（IDE） structure formed on top of the functionalized PSi layer. The sensors were tested for volatile organic compounds（VOCs） and water vapours in the wide range of 5–500 ppm concentration at room temperature. Functionalization of the nanostructured PSi by sputter deposited TiO_2 results in significant enhancement of sensitivity and inverse change in selectivity. PSi sensors have displayed strong response to water vapours whereas after functionalization, selective sensing to ethanol is depicted. Minimum detection by PSi sensors is portrayed at 100 ppm and that of functionalized sensors is at 10 ppm. Sensing mechanism is explained on the basis of surfaces and structures of both PSi and TiO_2. This study incites the importance of surface treatment of PSi for tuning the sensing properties and is useful in the development of selective alcohol sensors.

Patients with Cirrhosis of Liver Operated for Non-transplant Surgery: A Retrospective Analysis

Background and Aims:Patients with cirrhosis of the liver have high mortality after surgery.We investigated the mortality in patients with cirrhosis of the liver who underwent surgery other than liver transplant and applied the Mayo clinic model to predict mortality and compare with the observed mortality.We also studied the association of the observed mortality with the Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP)class and the model for end-stage liver disease(MELD)and model for end-stage liver disease-sodium(MELD-Na)scores.Methods:The electronic records database of our hospital was accessed to analyze the data of 133 cirrhotic patients who underwent various surgeries under general anesthesia from October 2009 to June 2017.The Mayo risk score was applied to each and used to calculate predicted mortality;the MELD and MELD-Na scores were also calculated.Telephonic interview was performed with the patients and or their relative to ascertain survival or time of death after surgery,when the information was not available from the hospital records.Results:The all-cause observed mortality rates at postoperative days 30 and 90 and at 1 year were 12%,20.3%and 26.3%respectively.The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values for the Mayo model as a predictor of 30-day,90-day and 1-year mortality were 0.836,0.828 and 0.744 respectively.Good correlation was seen for observed mortality with CTP class and with MELD and MELD-Na scores.Conclusions:The Mayo model for predicting postoperative mortality in patients with cirrhosis of the liver demonstrated good correlation in this study.The strength of prediction of mortality by Mayo risk score calculation was similar at postoperative days 30 and 90 but decreased at 1-year after the surgery.Good correlation was seen for the observed mortality with MELD,MELD-Na and CTP scores.

Scarcity of water and emission of greenhouse gases(GHGs)are the two key environmental issues affecting crop production in India.Reducing the carbon footprint(CF)and water footprint(WF)of crop production can help to mitigate the environmental hazards that stem from GHG emissions and water scarcity.The CFs and WFs of three major cereal crops,rice,wheat,and maize,were estimated for the year 2014 under the environmental conditions in India,based on national statistics and other data sources.Total CFs(TCFs)of rice,wheat,and maize in India were estimated to be 2.44,1.27,and 0.80 t CO_(2)equivalent ha-1,respectively,and product WFs for rice,wheat,and maize in India were 3.52,1.59,and 2.06 m3 kg^(-1),respectively.Blue WF was found to be the highest in West India for rice and in South India for both wheat and maize,with the highest irrigation water use in these regions.There was a positive correlation between TCF and total WF,and hence mitigation of both was possibly simultaneous in various regions in India.Potential measures for mitigating GHG emissions and optimizing water use for rice,wheat,and maize production in India are recommended in this paper.

Many researchers have developed various methods for in-planta or floral dip transformation of Arabidopsis thaliana, one of the simple protocol and widely used to produce transgenic Arabidopsis. As the efficiency and ease of getting a transformant is very much time consuming effort and less number of the transformants people get, we have developed a little modified transformation protocol to avoid the disparities. Four types of inoculums (inoculum1, inoculum2, inoculum3 and inoculum4) were used to check the transformation efficiency out of which Inoculum3 showed the highest rate of transformation among the four types. 0.07% Twin-20 also acts in same manner as silwet L-77 to increase the rate of transformation efficiency and glucose instead of sucrose can be used in inoculum to transform Arabidopsis. After vacuum infiltration keeping the Agrobacterium infected plants for 7-8 hrs horizontally in low light at 280C temperature condition, considered best to get an increased number of transformed seeds. Modified protocol produced ~12-14% increase in transformants. Selection pots (kanamycin supplemented soil filled pots) in place of selection plates (Kanamycin supplemented Murashige and Skoog agar plates) proved beneficial as no MS medium and no aseptic condition is required for selection of transformed plants. This increase in transformation efficiency consequently increased the percentage of homozygous and single copied stable transgenic lines.

BACKGROUNDMalnutrition affects 40%-90% of patients with cirrhosis of the liver. L3 skeletalmuscle index (L3SMI) is presently accepted as the most objective and quantitativemeasure available for sarcopenia, a surrogate marker of malnutrition. L3SMIapplication is, however, limited by non-availability of computed tomographyscanning in remote areas, cost, need for extensive training, and the risk ofexposure to radiation. Therefore, an alternative dependable measure with wideravailability is needed. Malnutrition causes sarcopenia not only in skeletal musclesbut also in other muscular structures such as the psoas muscle, diaphragm andtongue. We therefore hypothesised that the tongue, being easily accessible forinspection and for measurement of thickness using ultrasonography, may be usedto document sarcopenia.AIMTo measure and compare tongue thickness in healthy individuals and in patientswith cirrhosis of the liver and to study its correlation with conventionalprognostic scores for patients with cirrhosis of the liver.METHODSTongue thickness was measured using ultrasonography. One hundred twentysubjects of either gender aged 18 to 65 years were studied, with 30 subjects in eachgroup. The tongue thickness was compared between groups based on “ChildTurcotte Pugh” (CTP) scores. The correlations between measured tonguethickness and “Model for end stage liver disease” (MELD) score and between age and measured tongue thickness were also assessed.RESULTSMean tongue thickness (mean ± SD) in patients with CTP class A, B and C was4.39 ± 0.39 cm, 4.19 ± 0.53 cm, and 3.87 ± 0.42, respectively, and was 4.33 ± 0.49 cmin normal healthy individuals. Significant differences were seen in tonguethickness between patients with CTP class C and those with CTP class A and B (P< 0.05). Patients with CTP class C also had a significantly reduced tonguethickness than normal individuals (P < 0.05). Cycloplegic Refraction in Children: A Complete Audit Cycle

Purpose: Use of appropriate cycloplegic agent is an essential area of management in children with strabismus and refractive error. This study was designed to audit our own department’s understanding and practice with respect to cycloplegia. Methods: Children in age group of 0 - 12 years with refractive errors and strabismus were evaluated with respect to four parameters: adherence to cycloplegic refraction (group-I), choice of cycloplegic agent (group-II), dosage of cycloplegia (group-III) and duration of cycloplegia (group-IV). Following the initial audit, the hospital audit committee evaluated the results;thereafter concerned staff was educated and aidememoires of the dilatation protocol were introduced;a second audit cycle was carried out after 3 months. Results: First and second audit cycle included 334 children (mean age 6.2 ± 2.2 years) and 436 children (mean age 7.25 ± 2.9 years) respectively. A statistically significant improvement was found in all four parameters in the second audit cycle: adherence to dilation protocol (82.3% in first cycle to 94.3% in second cycle;p = 0.001), choice of cycloplegic agent (77% in the first cycle to 94.8% in the second cycle;p = 0.001), dosage of cycloplegic agent (84% in the first cycle to 96.3% in the second cycle;p = 0.001) and duration of cycloplegic agents (65% in the first cycle to 97.5% in the second cycle;p = 0.001 for CTC and 71.8% in the first cycle to 98% in the second cycle;p = 0.001 for Tropicamide). Conclusions: A complete audit cycle demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in all four parameters related to cycloplegic refraction in children. Regular auditing coupled with targeted interventions aimed to maintain the “best practice guidelines” for determination of refractive errors in children could prove effective in improving standards of clinical practice.

Change in catalase activity was examined in leaves of rice plant exposed to salinity. Depending on the method of preparation of crude protein extract from leaf and the constituents of the assay medium, a significant difference in enzyme activity was recorded. Inclusion of sorbitol or mannitol or sucrose in the extraction and enzyme assay medium enhanced the enzyme activity in salt-stressed samples by nearly 1.5-1.8 fold, compared to the activity found in un- stressed plants, which otherwise showed a 50% declined activity in leaf extract prepared in buffer solution and assayed in a medium depleted of these sugars. In view of the accumulation of osmolytes under saline condition, these observations suggest that the catalase activity is modulated by the osmolytes and maintains a high rate of hydrogen peroxide scavenging property in vivo and serves as the major antioxidant enzyme to scavenge the salt-induced formation of peroxide. Therefore, the salt-stress induced appearance of low activity of the enzyme under normal buffer extraction and assay conditions, as reported in literature may represent an apparent than for its real in vivo activity.
