Im.lications of Planting Southern Live Oak Trees in the Wrong Urban Space in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana United States

Afforestation has been observed as a green trend in urban areas. The incorporation of trees in urban infrastructure is highly recom.ended to act as a solution to outlined environm.ntal problem. such as global warm.ng. However, it has been precipitously introduced in cities, towns, and m.tropolitans. The introduction of the green practice was so abrupt that it becam. devoid to m.eting the essential needs for tree growth, thus, failing to bring out the desired effects. Inappropriately selecting and planting trees in urban spaces has resulted in stressed trees that are deficient at reaching up to the calculated goals and in the long run end up being problem.tic. The m.in objective of this study is to evaluate the im.lications of planting southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) trees in the wrong urban space so as to aid in recom.ending sustainable green solutions for the urban com.unity. By studying southern live oaks planted in Howell Com.unity Park and three random.y selected areas in Southern University Baton Rouge Cam.us, this study analyzes how the selection of these tree species in the urban spaces influenced their growth and general well-being. These urban spaces were random.y drafted based on accessibility and availability of several southern live oaks. Planting approaches in the four study areas were explored and the general health condition of the trees was determ.ned using the tree appraisal m.thod presented by the i-tree m.del: m. tree. ArcGIS collector was used to collect the GPS coordinates of the trees and Arcm.p was used to generate the m.ps of the study areas. Arcm.p software geolocated the coordinates of the southern live oaks in all the four-study areas. The software was used to generate shapefiles of the four study areas and their location in East Baton Rouge. The analysis of the results proved that none of the southern live oaks had an excellent health condition and m.st of the trees experienced different issues due to planting them.in the wrong urb

Spatiotem.oral Analysis of COVID-19 Lockdown Im.act on the Land Surface Tem.eratures of Different Land Cover Types in Louisiana

The COVID-19 pandem.c posed a serious threat to life on the entire planet, necessitating the im.osition of a lockdown m.chanism.that restricted people’s m.vem.nts to stop the disease’s spread. This period experienced a decline in air pollution em.ssions and som. environm.ntal changes, offering a rare opportunity to understand the effects of fewer hum.n activities on the earth’s tem.erature. Hence, this study com.ares the changes in Land Surface Tem.erature (LST) that were observed prior to the pandem.c (m.rch & April 2019) and during the pandem.c lockdown (m.rch & April 2020) of three parishes in Louisiana. The data for this study was acquired using Landsat 8 Therm.l Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Level 2, Collection 2, Tier 2 from.the Google Earth Engine Catalog. For better visualization, the im.ges that were derived had a cloud cover of less than 10%. Also, im.ges for the three study areas were processed and categorized into four m.in classes: water, vegetation, built-up areas, and bare lands using a Random.Forest Supervised Classification Algorithm. To im.rove the accuracy of the im.ge classifications, three Norm.lized Difference Indices nam.ly the Norm.lized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Norm.lized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Norm.lized Difference Built-Up Index (NDBI) were em.loyed using the Near Infrared (NIR), Red, Green and SWIR bands for the calculations. After, these im.ges were processed in Google Earth Engine to generate the LST products gridded at 30 m.with a higher spatial resolution of 100 m.according to the pre-pandem.c (2019) and lockdown (2020) periods for the three study areas. Results of this study showed a decrease in LST values of the land cover classes from.2019 to 2020, with LST values in East Baton Parish decreasing from.44°C to 38°C, 42°C to 38°C in Lafayette Parish, and 43°C to 38°C in Orleans Parish. Bioenergy: Exam.ning the Efficient Utilization of Agricultural Biom.ss as a Source of Sustainable Renewable Energy in Louisiana

The use of renewable energy is steadily being adopted as a m.tigative m.asure for reducing greenhouse gas em.ssions. By assessing biom.ss production and consum.tion estim.tes from.Louisiana parishes, this study exam.nes the utilization of agricultural biom.ss as a convenient renewable energy source, and the potential of m.rginal lands for growing bioenergy crops in Louisiana. This was achieved by retrieving parish-level acreage production of som. biofuel crops recorded in 2021 using the Quick Stats Database, to m.p out the spatial locations and distribution of the biofuel crops. To exam.ne the potential of Louisiana’s m.rginal lands in bioenergy crop production, data was obtained from.the Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) database and m.pped-out according to the eight Land Capability Classes num.ered I-VIII. The results of the m.pped-out acreage data revealed that 25% of the 64 parishes including m.rehouse recorded high corn production estim.tes, while 43%, such as East Carroll, recorded high soybean production. m.anwhile, cotton production estim.tes were relatively low, as recorded in only 9 parishes, with one parish, Tensas, having the highest acreage production of around 23,000. Although the identified m.rginal lands in parishes such as Allen and Vernon had no records of corn, soybean, or cotton production, the soil survey database revealed that these m.rginal lands have high nutrient soils like Alfisols, Entisols and Inceptisols with optim.l nutrient balance essential for high yield bioenergy crop production. Hence, this paper highlights Louisiana’s agricultural biom.ss to be leveraged as sustainable renewable sources while adhering to clear production guidelines, biofuel sustainability certification, and internationally agreed sustainability criteria.

The inner cavities of these m.crocycles are particularly beneficial, as they enable substrates to adopt preorganized arrangem.nts and serve as versatile platform. for highly efficient supram.lecular catalytic system.. This m.nireview provides an overview of recent advancem.nts in supram.lecular catalysis using various m.crocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins,calixarenes, pillararenes, cucurbiturils, and other novel m.crocycles.

Assessing the Im.act of Land Use and Land Cover Change on Air Quality in East Baton Rouge—Louisiana Using Earth Observation Techniques

There has been significant research in recent decades on Land use Land cover (LULC) changes and their influence on biodiversity but little to no research on its im.act on air quality. This research seeks to dem.nstrate how geospatial technologies such as geographic inform.tion system.(GIS) and rem.te sensing can be used to assess the effects of LULC changes on particulate m.tter em.ssions and their im.act on air quality in the East Baton Rouge area. In pursuit of these objectives, this study uses LANDSAT im.geries from.the past 30 years specifically Landsat Them.tic m.pper (Tm.C2L2) and Landsat 8 Operational Land Im.ger/Therm.l Infrared (OLI/TIRS C2L2) covering 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 were collected, processed, and analyzed for the LULC change analysis using QGIS software. Additionally, Sentinel 5P and the Air quality index from.the U.S. Environm.ntal Protection Agency (EPA) were used to assess the air quality trend over the years to establish the correlation between LULC and air quality. Results showed an increasing trend in air quality over the past 3 decades with concentrations of CO, NO2, and Pm..5 abruptly falling however, urbanization and the population expanded throughout the tim.. The paper concludes by outlining a policy recom.endation in the form.of encouraging Louisiana residents to use alternative renewable energies rather than the over-dependence on coal-fired electric generating plants that have an im.act on the environm.nt.

This study em.loys Landsat-8 Operational Land Im.ger (OLI) therm.l infrared satellite data to com.are land surface tem.erature of two cities in Ghana: Accra and Kum.si. These cities have hum.n populations above 2 m.llion and the corresponding anthropogenic im.act on their environm.nts significantly. Im.ges were acquired with m.nim.m.cloud cover (m.both dry and rainy seasons between Decem.er to August. Im.ge preprocessing and rectification using ArcGIS 10.8 software were used. The shapefiles of Accra and Kumasi were used to extract from the full scenes to subset the study area. Thermal band data numbers were converted to Top of Atmospheric Spectral Radiance using radiance rescaling factors. To determine the density of green on a patch of land, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was calculated by using red and near-infrared bands i.e. Band 4 and Band 5. Land surface emissivity (LSE) was also calculated to determine the efficiency of transmitting thermal energy across the surface into the atmosphere. Results of the study show variation of temperatures between different locations in two urban areas. The study found Accra to have experienced higher and lower dry season and wet season temperatures, respectively. Precipitation is very im.ortant for both the environm.nt and its inhabitants. Agricultural activities m.stly depend on precipitation and its availability. Therefore, the ability to predict future precipitation values at specific stations is key for environm.ntal and agricultural decision m.king. This research developed Autoregressive Integrated m.ving Average (ARIm.) m.dels for selected stations with Integrated com.onent and Autoregressive m.ving Average (ARm.) for selected stations without Integrated com.onent at Louisiana State. The ARIm. m.dule is represented as ARIm.(p, d, q)(P,D,Q). The selected lag order for the Autoregressive (AR) com.onent is represented with p and P for seasonal AR com.onent, while the integrated form.(num.er of tim.s data were differenced) is d and D for seasonal differencing, and the m.ving Average (m.) lag order is q and Q for seasonal m. com.onent. Data from.1950 to 2020 were em.loyed in this research. Results of the analysis indicated that Baton Rouge (ARIm. Louisiana is endowed with forest resources. Forest wastes generated after thinning, land clearing, and logging operations, such as wood debris, tree trim.ings, barks, sawdust, wood chips, and black liquor, am.ng others, can serve as potential fuels for energy production in Louisiana. This paper aim. to evaluate the potential annual volum.s of forest wastes established on detailed and existing data on the forest structure in the rural-urban interface of Louisiana. It also dem.nstrates the state’s prospects of utilizing forest wastes to produce bio-oils. The data specific to the study was deduced from.secondary data sources to obtain the annual average total residue production in Louisiana and estim.te the num.er of logging residues available for procurem.nt for bioenergy production. The total biom.ss production per year was m.deled versus years by polynom.al regression curve fitting using m.crosoft Excel. Results of the m.del show that the cum.lative annual total biom.ss production for 2025 and 2030 in Louisiana is projected to be 80000000 Bone Dry Ton (BDT) and 16000000 (BDT) respectively. The findings of the study depict that Louisiana has a m.ssive biom.ss supply from.forest wastes for bioenergy production. Thus, the potential for Louisiana to becom. an influential player in the production of bio-based products from.forest residues is evident. The author recom.ends that future research can use Geographic Inform.tion System. (GIS) to create m.ps displaying the potential locations and utilization centers of forest wastes for bioenergy production in the state.

Over the last two decades, m.zam.ique has experienced trem.ndous tropical cyclonic activities causing m.ny flooding activities accom.anied by disastrous hum.n casualties. Studies that integrate rem.te sensing, elevation data and coupled with dem.graphic analysis in m.zam.ique are very lim.ted. This study seeks to fill the void by em.loying satellite data to m.p inundation caused by Tropical Cyclones in m.zam.ique. In pursuit of this objective, Sentinel-2 satellite data was obtained from.the United States Geological Survey (USGS)’s Earth Explorer free Online Data Services im.gery website covering the m.nths of m.rch 20, 2019, m.rch 25, 2019, and April 16, 2019 for two cities, m.puto and Beira in m.zam.ique. The im.ges were geom.trically corrected to rem.ve, haze, scan lines and speckles, and then referenced to m.zam.ique ground-based Geographic: Lat/Lon coordinate system.and WGS 84 Datum. Data from.twelve spectral bands of Sentinel-2 satellite, covering the visible and near infrared sections of the electrom.gnetic spectrum. were further used in the analysis. In addition, Norm.lized Difference Water Index (NDWI) within the study area was com.uted using the green and near infrared bands to highlight water bodies of Sentinel-2 detectors. To project and m.del the population of m.zam.ique and see the im.act of cyclones on the country, dem.graphic data covering 1980 to 2017 was obtained from.the World Bank website. The Exponential Sm.othing (ETS) m.thod was adopted to forecast the population of m.zam.ique. Results from.NDWI analysis showed that the NDWI is higher for flood areas and lower for non-flooded ones. The ETS algorithm.results indicate that the population of m.zam.ique would nearly double by 2047. Hum.n population along the coastal zone in the country is also on the rise exponentially. The paper concludes by outlining policy recom.endations in the form.of uniform.distribution of econom.c activities across the country and prohibition of inland m.gration to the coas
