Prospects of Robot Laser Cutting in the Era of Industry 4.0

Laser cutting is a non-contact thermal cutting process and an integral part of manufacturing. In metal processing, laser cutting is at the forefront of the manufacturing chain followed by joining and manufacturing processes like welding. The future of metal manufacturing processes like laser cutting shall rely on intelligent systems such as automation and robotics based on the advancement of technology and digital transformation spearheaded by Industry 4.0. Moreover, the digital transition where robots and automated systems are key drivers creates a broader platform to utilize energy-efficiency materials. Such energy-efficient materials include high-strength steels (HSS) for structural applications (e.g. bio-energy structures, wind turbines, ice-going vessels) onshore, offshore and in the Arctic region. The aim of this paper is to elucidate the prospects of robot laser cutting systems in the framework of integrated metal manufacturing in future factories. Previous studies on laser cutting technologies are examined based on scientific and industrial perspectives. Robot laser cutting system is compared with the well-known flat-bed laser cutting CNC machine in several aspects including flexibility in manufacturing, ease for digitalization, off-line capabilities and investment analysis. The findings shall help to determine the competitiveness of robot laser cutting systems with flat-bed laser cutting CNC machines, especially when considering metal manufacturing in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The outcome of this study is to stir up experimental and computational research on robot laser cutting systems of metals, and help companies in their decision-making process when deciding which laser cutting system will best suit their manufacturing operations in the future.

A Robust Alternative Virtual Key Input Scheme for Virtual Keyboard Systems

Towards virtual keyboard design and realization, the work in this paper presents a robust key input method for deployment in virtual keyboard systems. The proposed scheme harnesses the information contained within shadows towards robustifying virtual key input. This scheme allows for input efficiency to be guaranteed in situations of relatively lower illumination, a core challenge associated with virtual keyboards. Contributions of the paper are two-fold. Firstly the paper pre-sents an approach towards effectively applying shadow information towards robustifying virtual key input systems;Secondly, through morphological operations, the performance of this input method is boosted by means of effectively alleviating noise and its impacts on overall algorithm performance, while highlighting the necessary features towards an efficient performance. While previous contributions have followed a similar trend, the contribution of this paper stresses on the intensification and improvement of both shadow and finger-tip feature highlighting schemes towards overall performance improvement. Experimental results presented in the paper demon-strate the efficiency and robustness of the approach. The attained results suggest that the scheme is capable of attaining high performances in terms of accuracy while being capable of addressing false touch situations.

A Novel Method for Night-Time Single Image Dehazing

Images acquired under deprived weather environment are frequently corrupted due to the presence of haze, mist, fog or other aerosols in a form of noise. Haze elimination is essential in computer vision and computational photography applications. Generally, there is the existence of numerous approaches towards haze removal which are mostly meant for hazy images under daytime environments. Although the potency of these proposed approaches has been comprehensively established on daylight hazy images. However these procedures inherit significant limitations on images influenced by night-time hazy environments. Since night time haze removal dehazing remains an ill-posed problem, we proposed a novel method for night-time single image dehazing which is efficient under night-time environments. The proposed scheme is a dark channel-based local image dehazing procedure that locally estimates the atmospheric intensity for each selected mask on a corrupted image independently and not the entire image. This is done in order to overcome the challenge of night-scenes that are exposed to multiple/artificial lights source and spatially non-uniform environmental illumination. We performed an adaptive filtering on the combined dehazed masks to improve the degraded image. We validated the supremacy of the proposed approach in terms of speed and robustness through computer-based experiments. Conclusively, we displayed comparison results with state-of-the-art and extensively emphasized the comparative advantage of our scheme.

Human-computer Interaction and its recent development in computer technology in modern years has grown rapidly, the inventions and researches about portable input devices into small devices is becoming an increasingly factor in development of electronic devices such as laptops, smart phones, tablet PCs and others. Whiles the traditional keyboard is commonly known to be inconvenient and has its limited reliability, robustness, and flexibility render it unsuitable for certain tasks to be attained, for example to carry as it occupies too much space, the phone keypad on the other hand cannot be operated easily with its tiny keypads, and those hinder the flexibility and the comfort ability in human-computer interaction. Virtual or projection keyboards also exists in various human machine interfaces which extends to a wide range of applications in the markets such as personal electronics, industrial automation, medical and health,automotive, public information kiosks and Automatic Teller Machines（ATM）,*** semi-virtual keyboards is designed based on digital image processing technology which has been one of the crucial area of research over years, virtual keyboards does not need any keyboard entity, In this research thesis, a virtual keyboard is known as pure virtual keyboard, whose keys are generated by projection but on the other hand, the keyboard design in this thesis is called semi-virtual keyboard because it does inherit a partial characteristics of the pure virtual keyboards with keys printed on other objects such as paper or a *** semi-virtual keyboards is designed based on digital image processing technology which has been one of the crucial area of research over years, virtual keyboards does not need any keyboard entity, semi virtual key input takes different kinds of input whiles most input uses the finger tips,this research proposes using shadow analysis base on the reason of poor illumination being a very well-studied problem under machine vision,

Teamwork and Physician Burnout: The Moderating Role of Perceived Organisational Support

Burnout is an important issue which has attracted the attention of physicians and health practitioners. Several studies have reported the negative effect of physician burnout and the adverse effect it has on the individual and health institutions. This study therefore examined the moderating effect of perceived organizational support on the relationship between teamwork and physician burnout in the Chinese context. Using a survey data consisting of a sample of physicians from hospitals within the Jiangsu Province of China, we estimated three models in a hierarchical framework and identified that in the presence of respondent’s demographic characteristics as control variables, perceived organizational support, play a very vital role in improving teamwork while reducing burnout among physicians.

Meteorological Drought Detection and Forecast Using Standardized Precipitation Index and Univariate Distribution Models: Case Study of Bamako, Mali

As an extended period of unusually dry weather conditions without sufficient rain, drought poses enormous risk on societies. Characterized by the absence of precipitation for long periods of time, often resulting in water scarcity, droughts are increasingly posing significant environmental challenges. Drought is therefore considered an important element in the management of water resources, especially groundwater resources during drought. This study therefore sought to investigate the rainfall variability and the frequency of drought for the period 1991 to 2020 in Bamako based on monthly rainfall data from Bamako-Senou gauge station. The standardized precipitation index (SPI) for 12-month, 6-month and 3-month timescales and the SPI for annual totals were used to characterized drought in the study area (Bamako). Univariate parametric probability distributions such as Normal, Log-normal, Gumbel type I and Pearson type III (P3) distributions were fitted with drought variables (severity and duration) for future planning and management. Non-parametric test such as Mann-Kendall trend test was also used to detect trend in annual rainfall data. The results showed that based on 12-month SPI, Bamako experienced two (02) extreme droughts one in July 2002 (SPI = -2.2165) and another in June 2015 (SPI = -2.0598 QUOTE SPI=-2.0598 ). Drought years represented 46.67% for the overall periods according to the SPI for annual totals. The result further indicated that based on the goodness of fit test, the P3 distribution represents the best fitted distribution to both drought severity and duration over Bamako. Bamako is expected to experience several severe severities with higher and shorter duration in the future. Severities with 1, 2, 6, and 10-month duration had return periods ranged from 2.4 to 3.8 years, while 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, and 100-year return periods had 18.51, 26.08, 33.25, 35.50, 42.38, and 49.14 severities, respectively, and durations associated to these severities were 1

Investigation into Recent Temperature and Rainfall Trends in Mali Using Mann-Kendall Trend Test: Case Study of Bamako

Rainfall and temperature variability analysis is important for researchers and policy formulators in making critical decisions on water availability and use in communities. The Western Sahel, which comprises Mali is considered as one of the vulnerable regions to climate change, and also encountered the challenges of climatic shocks such as flood and drought. This research therefore sought to investigate climate change effects on hydrological events and trends in Sahelian rainfall intensity using Bamako (Mali) as a case study from 1991 to 2020, as limited data availability did not allow an extended period of study. Monthly observed data provided by MALI-METEO was used to validate daily rainfalls data from African Rainfall Climatology Version 2 (ARC2) satellite-based rainfall product on monthly basis. The validated model performance used Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and Percent Bias (PBAIS) and gave results of 0.904 and 1.0506 respectively. Trends in annual maximum temperatures and rainfalls were analyzed using Mann-Kendall trend test. The result indicated that the trend in annual maximum rainfalls was decreasing, while annual total rainfall was increasing but not significant at 5% significance level. The rate of increase in annual total rainfalls was 0.475 mm/year according to the observed annual rainfall series and decreased to 0.68 mm/year in annual maximum. The analysis further found that annual maximum temperatures were increasing at the rate of 0.03°C/year at 5% significance level. To provide more accurate climate predictions, it is recommended that further studies on rainfall and temperature with data sets spanning 60 - 90 years be carried out.
