Hypoxic patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)are at high risk of adverse *** nitric oxide(iNO)has shown anti-viral and immunomodulatory effects in ***,in vivo evidence of efficacy in hypoxic COVID-19 is *** open label feasibility study was conducted at a single referral center in South India and evaluated the effectiveness of repurposed iNO in improving clinical outcomes in COVID-19 and its correlation with viral *** recruited hypoxemic COVID-19 patients and allocated them into treatment(iNO)and control groups(1:1).Viral clearance on day 5 favored the treatment group(100%vs 72%,P<0.01).The speed of viral clearance as adjudged by normalized longitudinal cycle threshold(Ct)values was positively impacted in the treatment *** proportion of patients who attained clinical improvement,defined as a≥2-point change on the World Health Organization ordinal scale,was higher in the iNO cohort(n=11,79%)as compared to the control group(n=4,36%)(odds ratio 6.42,95%confidence interval 1.09–37.73,P=0.032).The proportion of patients progressing to mechanical ventilation in the control group(4/11)was significantly higher than in the treatment group(0/14).The all-cause 28-day mortality was significantly different among the study arms,with 36%(4/11)of the patients dying in the control group while none died in the treatment *** numbers needed to treat to prevent an additional poor outcome of death was estimated to be *** study demonstrates the putative role of repurposed iNO in hypoxemic COVID-19 patients and calls for extended validation.

Synergy of remotely sensed data in spatiotemporal dynamic modeling of the crop and cover management factor

Soil erosion is a threat to the water quality constituents of sediments and nutrients and can cause long-term environmental *** important parameter to quantify the risk of soil loss from erosion is the crop and cover management factor(C-factor),which represents how cropping and management practices affect the rates and potential risk of soil *** developed remotely sensed data-driven models for dynamic predictions of C-factor by implementing dynamic land cover modeling using the SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool)model on a watershed *** remotely sensed processed variables included the enhanced vegetation index(EVI),the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by green vegetation(FPAR),leaf area index(LAI),soil available water content(AWC),slope gradient(SG),and ratio of area(AR)of every hydrologic response unit(HRU)to that of the total watershed,comprising unique land cover,soil type,and slope gradient characteristics within the Fish River catchment in Alabama,USA between 2001 and *** regressions,spatial trend analysis,correlation matrices,forward stepwise multivariable regression(FSMR),and 2-fold cross-validation were conducted to evaluate whether there were possible associations between the C-factor and EVI with the successive addition of remotely sensed environmental *** on the data analysis and modeling,we found a significant association between the C-factor and EVI with the synergy of the environmental factors FPAR,LAI,AWC,AR,and SG(predicted R^(2)(R^(2)_(pred))=0.51;R^(2)=0.68,n=3220,P<0.15).The results showed that the developed FSMR model constituting the non-conventional factors AWC(R^(2)_(pred)=0.32;R^(2)=0.48,n=3220,P<0.05)and FPAR(R^(2)_(pred)=0.13;R^(2)=0.28,n=3220,P=0.31)was an improved fit for the watershed *** conclusion,the union of dynamic variables related to vegetation(EVI,FPAR,and LAI),soil(AWC),and topography(AR and SG)can be utilized for spatiotemporal C-factor estimation and to mo

Topology control of tactical wireless sensor networks using energy efficient zone routing

The US Department of Defense （DoD） routinely uses wireless sensor networks （WSNs） for military tactical communications. Sensor node die-out has a significant impact on the topology of a tactical WSN. This is problematic for military applications where situational data is critical to tactical decision making. To increase the amount of time all sensor nodes remain active within the network and to control the network topology tactically, energy efficient routing mechanisms must be employed. In this paper, we aim to provide realistic insights on the practical advantages and disadvantages of using established routing techniques for tactical WSNs. We investigate the following established routing algorithms： direct routing, minimum transmission energy （MTE）, Low Energy Adaptive Cluster Head routing （LEACH）, and zone clustering. Based on the node die out statistics observed with these algorithms and the topological impact the node die outs have on the network, we develop a novel, energy efficient zone clustering algorithm called EZone. Via extensive simulations using MATLAB, we analyze the effectiveness of these algorithms on network performance for single and multiple gateway scenarios and show that the EZone algorithm tactically controls the topology of the network, thereby maintaining significant service area coverage when compared to the other routing algorithms.

The invention of Phasor Measurement Units(PMUs)produce synchronized phasor measurements with high resolution real time monitoring and control of power system in smart grids that make *** are used in transmitting data to Phasor Data Concentrators(PDC)placed in control centers for monitoring purpose.A primary concern of system operators in control centers is maintaining safe and efficient operation of the power *** can be achieved by continuous monitoring of the PMU data that contains both normal and abnormal *** normal data indicates the normal behavior of the grid whereas the abnormal data indicates fault or abnormal conditions in power *** a result,detecting anomalies/abnormal conditions in the fast flowing PMU data that reflects the status of the power system is critical.A novel methodology for detecting and categorizing abnormalities in streaming PMU data is presented in this *** proposed method consists of three modules namely,offline Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM),online GMM for identifying anomalies and clustering ensemble model for classifying the *** significant features of the proposed method are detecting anomalies while taking into account of multivariate nature of the PMU dataset,adapting to concept drift in the flowing PMU data without retraining the existing model unnecessarily and classifying the *** proposed model is implemented in Python and the testing results prove that the proposed model is well suited for detection and classification of anomalies on the fly.

Heteroepitaxial growth is a process of profound fundamental importance as well as an avenue to realize nanostructures such as Ge/Si quantum dots(QDs),with appealing properties for applications in opto-and ***,controlling the Ge/Si QD size,shape,and composition remains a major obstacle to their practical ***,Ge nanostructures on Si(111)were investigated in situ and in real-time by low energy electron microscopy(LEEM),enabling the observation of the transition from wetting layer formation to 3D island growth and *** island size,shape,and distribution depend strongly on the growth *** the deposition temperature increases,the islands become larger and sparser,consistent with Brownian nucleation and capture *** 550◦C,two distinct Ge/Si nanostructures are formed with bright and dark appearances that correspond to flat,atoll-like and tall,faceted islands,*** annealing,the faceted islands increase in size at the expense of the flat ones,indicating that the faceted islands are thermodynamically more *** contrast,triangular islands with uniform morphology are obtained from deposition at 600◦C,suggesting that the growth more closely follows the ideal *** annealing,the islands formed at 600◦C initially show no change in morphology and size and then rupture simultaneously,signaling a homogeneous chemical potential of the *** observations reveal the role of dynamics and energetics in the evolution of Ge/Si QDs,which can serve as a step towards the precise control over the Ge nanostructure size,shape,composition,and distribution on Si(111).

Voltage Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow Using NSGA-II

Voltage stability has become an important issue in planning and operation of many power systems. This work includes multi-objective evolutionary algorithm techniques such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II) approach for solving Voltage Stability Constrained-Optimal Power Flow (VSC-OPF). Base case generator power output, voltage magnitude of generator buses are taken as the control variables and maximum L-index of load buses is used to specify the voltage stability level of the system. Multi-Objective OPF, formulated as a multi-objective mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem, minimizes fuel cost and minimizes emission of gases, as well as improvement of voltage profile in the system. NSGA-II based OPF-case 1-Two objective-Min Fuel cost and Voltage stability index;case 2-Three objective-Min Fuel cost, Min Emission cost and Voltage stability index. The above method is tested on standard IEEE 30-bus test system and simulation results are done for base case and the two severe contingency cases and also on loaded conditions.

Racial Provocation Induces Cortisol Responses in African-Americans

Purpose: To examine salivary cortisol responses to a racially-charged stimulus in a group of African-American individuals. Methods: A nonrandom sample of 245 (age: 43.8 ± 11.1 years;64% female) African-American individuals was recruited by advertisements. Specifically, salivary cortisol was assessed prior to and after being exposed to a racially-charged movie clip. In addition, the salivary cortisol was assessed in?the morning and evening of the day following exposure to the racially-charged movie clip. Results: A statistically significant increase in cortisol was found (P 0.005) in the whole sample. High cortisol responders (highest tertile) and low cortisol responders (lowest tertile) were compared. The high cortisol responders had an elevated cortisol level the following morning (P 0.05) that abated by the evening sample (P > 0.20). In addition, the high cortisol responders who were younger, had lower waist to hip ratios, and experienced less lifetime discrimination than the low cortisol responders (P’s 0.05). Conclusions: The findings of an increase in cortisol in response to a racial provocation may provide a potential explanatory factor for the increased rates of cardiovascular disease in African-American individuals.
