The Effect of Processing Variables on Antioxidative Capacity of Mangosteen Peel （Garcinia mangostana L.） Extract

Mangosteen peel （Garcinia mangostana L.） is well known as an excellent source of antioxidative compounds. The objective of this study was to determine the most suitable processing condition for ethanolic extraction of mangosteen peel. The experimental factors included raw material prepared as fresh and dried forms, material-to-solvent ratio varying at 1：3, 1：4, 1：5, 1：6, 1：9 and 1：12, and contacting time at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 16 hours. Antioxidative capacity of all extracts were evaluated and compared according to DPPH radical scarvenging assay, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity （TEAC assay） and total phenolic compounds. It was found that the extract from dried mangosteen peel had significantly stronger antioxidative capacity than that from fresh mangosteen peel （P 〈 0.05）. The suitable ethanolic extraction was found at the material-to-solvent ratio of 1：6 and 12 hours of contacting time. Mangosteen peel extracts prepared from fresh peel, dried peel, boiled and dried peel were also tested for oxidative rancidity reduction in lard at accelerated temperature of 60 ~C. The antioxidative rancidity was measured by acid value, totox value and thiobarbituric acid test. Commercial rosemary extract and BHT were compared at the equivalent concentration of 1,000 mg/kg. The results showed that the extract from dried mangosteen peel provided antioxidative capacity slightly stronger than fresh mangosteen peel extract, similar to rosemary extract but still poorer than BHT.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of aloe vera in rats with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

BACKGROUND Aloe vera exerts several biological activities,such as,anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antimicrobial *** was recently shown to reduce insulin resistance and triglyceride *** hypothesized that aloe vera would have beneficial effects in alleviating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)in *** To examine the therapeutic effects of aloe vera in NASH *** All rats were randomly divided into 3 groups(n=6 in each group).Rats in the control group were fed ad libitum with a standard diet for 8 *** in the NASH group were fed ad libitum with a high-fat high-fructose diet(HFHFD)for 8 *** in the aloe vera group were fed ad libitum with a HFHFD and aloe vera in dimethylsulfoxide(50 mg/kg)by gavage daily for 8 *** samples were collected at the end of the treatment *** Hepatic malondialdehyde(MDA)levels increased significantly in the NASH group as compared with the control group(377±77 nmol/mg vs 129±51 nmol/mg protein,respectively,P<0.001).Glutathione(GSH)levels were significantly lower in the NASH group than the control group(9±2 nmol/mg vs 24±8 nmol/mg protein,respectively,P=0.001).The expression of interleukin-18 (IL-18), nuclear factor-kappa β, and caspase-3 increased, while peroxisomeproliferator-activated receptor gamma decreased in the NASH group comparedwith the controls. Following aloe vera administration, MDA levels decreased (199± 35 nmol/mg protein) and GSH increased (18 ± 4 nmol/mg protein) ***, hepatocyte ballooning, lobular inflammation and increased hepatocyteapoptosis were observed in the NASH group. Aloe vera treatment attenuatedthese changes in liver *** vera attenuated oxidative stress, hepatic inflammation and hepatocyteapoptosis, thus improving liver pathology in rats with NASH.

Degradation Behaviors of Thai <i>Bombyx mori</i>Silk Fibroins Exposure to Protease Enzymes

The degradation behaviors of Thai Bombyx mori called Samrong and Nanglai silk fibroins exposure to protease enzymes;protease XIV, protease XXIII and α-chymotrypsin type II were studied in this work. The degradation behaviors were expressed by their weight loss, morphological and secondary structure changes as well as thermal properties. Samrong showed higher percentage of weight loss than Nanglai. SEM micrographs indicated that silk fibroin were de- stroyed and showed many holes on their fiber surfaces. All of silk samples were increasable destroyed when exposure to the protease enzyme for long incubation period. With thermal analysis, both silk fibroin presented the thermal stability in the same profile. The result suggested that the selected silk fibroin should be composed of similar pattern of amino acids and their ratios. However, the protease susceptibility of each silk fibroin slightly varied in case of morphology observation. This might be affected by their genetic variety.

Preparation and characterization of genipin-cross-linked chitosan microparticles by water-in-oil emulsion solvent diffusion method

Chitosan (CS) microparticles with and without cross-linking were prepared by a water-in-oil emulsion solvent diffusion method without any surfactants. Aqueous CS solution and ethyl ace- tate were used as water and oil phases, respectively. Genipin was used as a cross-linker. Influ- ences of genipin ratios and cross-linking times on CS microparticle characteristics were investigated. Non-cross-linked and cross-linked CS microparticles were spherical in shape and rough in surface. Microparticle matrices showed porous structures. Surface roughness, mean par- ticle sizes and bulk density of CS microparticles increased and their dissolutions in acetic acid solution decreased when genipin ratio and cross- linking time increased.

Preparation of Eri silk fibroin and gelatin blend film loaded chlorhexidine using as model for hydrophilic drug release

The objective of this research was to prepare Eri silk fibroin solution for preparing silk film loaded chlorhexidine drug as model for hydrophilic drug release. The Eri silk cocoons were boiled in 0.5%NaCO3 solution at 90℃, and then left in air dried at room temperature. The fibroin was dissolved in 9M (Ca(NO3)2) with ethanol (2 by mole) and heated at 70℃. The silk fibroin (SF) solution was then dialyzed to exclude salt in phosphate buffer. The SF and gelatin (G) solutions were mixed for preparation of films in both with and without chlorhexidine. The films were observed their morphology under scanning electron microscope. The results found that all of films were rough of their surfaces, homogeneous texture without phase separation. The native SF film composed of pores throughout the film area but did not observe in native G film. The results also showed that the SF and G can be good interacted to form hydrogen bonds. These were indicated from FTIR spectra and thermal analysis. The chlorhexidine drug has not affect on the changes of film properties. However, the releasing pattern of chlorhexidine from each film was varied. The highest rate of drug releasing was found in the native SF film while the native G film was the lowest. It might be suggested that the drug releasing rate was depended on polarity of each polymer components.

Minimum MSE Weighted Estimator to Make Inferences for a Common Risk Ratio across Sparse Meta-Analysis Data

The paper aims to discuss three interesting issues of statistical inferences for a common risk ratio (RR) in sparse meta-analysis data. Firstly, the conventional log-risk ratio estimator encounters a number of problems when the number of events in the experimental or control group is zero in sparse data of a 2 × 2 table. The adjusted log-risk ratio estimator with the continuity correction points based upon the minimum Bayes risk with respect to the uniform prior density over (0, 1) and the Euclidean loss function is proposed. Secondly, the interest is to find the optimal weights of the pooled estimate that minimize the mean square error (MSE) of subject to the constraint on where , , . Finally, the performance of this minimum MSE weighted estimator adjusted with various values of points is investigated to compare with other popular estimators, such as the Mantel-Haenszel (MH) estimator and the weighted least squares (WLS) estimator (also equivalently known as the inverse-variance weighted estimator) in senses of point estimation and hypothesis testing via simulation studies. The results of estimation illustrate that regardless of the true values of RR, the MH estimator achieves the best performance with the smallest MSE when the study size is rather large and the sample sizes within each study are small. The MSE of WLS estimator and the proposed-weight estimator adjusted by , or , or are close together and they are the best when the sample sizes are moderate to large (and) while the study size is rather small.
