Aircraft designers strive to achieve optimal weight-reliability tradeoffs while designing an aircraft. Since aircraft wing sk.ns account for more than fifty percent of their structural weight, aircraft wings must be designed with utmost care and attention in terms of material types and thick.ess configurations. In particular, the selection of thick.ess at each location of the aircraft wing sk.n is the most consequential task.for aircraft designers. To accomplish this, we present discrete mathematical programming models to obtain optimal thick.esses either to minimize weight or to maximize reliability. We present theoretical results for the decomposition of these discrete mathematical programming models to reduce computer memory requirements and facilitate the use of dynamic programming for design purposes. In particular, a decomposed version of the weight minimization problem is solved for an aircraft wing with thirty locations (or panels) and fourteen thick.ess choices for each location to yield an optimal minimum weight design.

A light and reliable aircraft has been the major goal of aircraft designers. It is imperative to design the aircraft wing sk.ns as efficiently as possible since the wing sk.ns comprise more than fifty percent of the structural weight of the aircraft wing. The aircraft wing sk.n consists of many different types of material and thick.ess configurations at various locations. Selecting a thick.ess for each location is perhaps the most significant design task. In this paper, we formulate discrete mathematical programming models to determine the optimal thick.esses for three different criteria: maximize reliability, minimize weight, and achieve a trade-off between maximizing reliability and minimizing weight. These three model formulations are generalized discrete resource-allocation problems, which lend themselves well to the dynamic programming approach. Consequently, we use the dynamic programming method to solve these model formulations. To illustrate our approach, an example is solved in which dynamic programming yields a minimum weight design as well as a trade-off curve for weight versus reliability for an aircraft wing with thirty locations (or panels) and fourteen thick.ess choices for each location.

Accuracy of preoperative CT liver volumetry in living donor hepatectomy and its clinical implications

Back.round: An accurate preoperative volumetric assessment of donor liver is essential for successful living donor liver transplant by ensuring adequate remnant and graft recipient weight ratio (GRWR). Methods: The study cohort consisted of 744 right lobe (RL), 65 left lobe (LL) and 33 left lateral sector (LLS) grafts from July 2010 to January 2014. A semi-automated interactive commercial software called AW Volume share 6 was used for volumetry. Bland Altman plot was used for assessing the agreement between estimated graft weight (EGW) and actual graft weight (AGW). Results: There was no statistically significant difference between EGW and AGW for RL graft weight (722±134 vs. 717±126 gm;P=0.06). Although Bland Altman graph showed that 95% limits of agreement was more in LL (?164 to +110) than RL (?156 to +147) and LLS grafts (?137 to +239), CT scan significantly overestimated LL graft weight (EGW =460±118 gm vs. AGW =433±102 gm;P=0.003) and underestimated LLS graft weight (EGW =203±48 gm vs. AGW =254±49 gm;Pk.ng higher GRWR.
