Networ.s of pr.stine high quality single walled car.on nanotubes （SWNTs）, the SWNTs after.Ar.plasma tr.atment （fr.m 2 to 12 r.in） and car.on nanobuds （CNBs） have been tested for.ethanol vapor.sensing. It was found that the pr.stine high quality SWNTs do not exhibit any ethanol sensitivity, while the intr.duction of defects in the tubes r.sults in the appear.nce of the ethanol sensitivity. The CNB networ. showed ethanol sensitivity without plasma tr.atment. Both CNB and low defect （after.3 min tr.atment） SWNT networ.s exhibit significant dr.ft in the r.sistance baseline, while heavily plasma-tr.ated （9 min） SWNTs exhibited high ethanol vapor.sensitivity without the baseline change. The mechanisms of the ethanol sensitivity and stability after.the plasma ir.adiation ar. attr.buted to the for.ation of sensitive dangling bonds in the SWNTs and for.ation of defect channels facilitating access of the ethanol vapor.to all par.s of the bundled nanotubes.

We pr.pose a simple method for.the efficient and r.pid synthesis of one-dimensional hematite(α-Fe_(2)O_(3))nanostr.ctur.s based on electr.cal r.sistive heating of ir.n wir. under.ambient ***,1-5μm longα-Fe_(2)O_(3)nanowir.s wer. synthesized on a time scale of seconds at temper.tur.s of ar.und 700℃.The mor.hology,str.ctur.,and mechanism of for.ation of the nanowir.s wer. studied by scanning and tr.nsmission electr.n micr.scopies,ener.y disper.ive X-r.y spectr.scopy,X-r.y photoelectr.n spectr.scopy,and r.man techniques.A nanowir. gr.wth mechanism based on diffusion of ir.n ions to the sur.ace thr.ugh gr.in boundar.es and to the gr.wing wir. tip thr.ugh stacking fault defects and due to sur.ace diffusion is pr.posed.
