In the present research program, polymer nanocomposites have been used as the drug carrier for delivery systems of anticancer drug. Chitosan (Cs) and Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) with different ratios were blended with different wt% of Cloisite 30b solution by solvent casting method. Glutaraldehyde with different wt% was added to the blended solution as a crosslinking agent. Cloisite 30b was incorporated in the formulation as a matrix material component which also plays the role of a co-emulsifier in the nanocomposite preparation. Curcumin with different concentrations were loaded with CS-PVA/ C 30b nanocomposites for studying the in-vitro drug delivery systems. Morphology and structure characterization of nanocomposites were investigated by fourier transmission infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), tensile strength and water uptake capacity. The drug release was studied by changing time, pH and drug concentrations. The kinetics of the drug release was studied in order to ascertain the type of release mechanism. based on the diffusion as well as the kinetics, the mechanism of the drug release from the composite matrix has been reported.

Experimentally measured neutron activation cross sections are presented for the^(65)Cu(n,α)^(62m)Cu,^(41)K(n,α)^(38)Cl,and^(65)Cu(n,2n)^(64)Cu reactions with detailed uncertainty *** neutron cross sections were measured at an incident energy of 14.92±0.02 MeV,and the neutrons were based on the t(d,n)αfusion ***^(27)Al(n,α)^(24)Na reaction was used as a reference reaction for the normalization of the neutron *** pre-calibrated lead-shielded HPGe detector was used to detect the residues'γ-ray *** data from the measured cross sections are compared to the previously measured cross sections from the EXFOR database,theoretically calculated cross sections using the TALYS and EMPIRE codes,and evaluated nuclear data.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are two important wireless technologies that have wide variety of applications and provide limitless future potentials. However,RFID and sensor networks almost are under development in parallel way. Integration of RFID and wireless sensor networks attracts little attention from research community. This paper first presents a brief introduction on RFID,and then investigates recent research works,new products/patents and applications that integrate RFID with sensor networks. Four types of integration are discussed. They are integrating tags with sensors,integrating tags with wireless sensor nodes,integrating readers with wireless sensor nodes and wire-less devices,and mix of RFID and sensors. New challenges and future works are discussed in the end.

Steam explosion is one of the crucial and poorly understood phenomena which may occur during severe accident scenario and may lead to containment failure. In spite of several experimental and analytical studies, the root cause of steam explosion has not been understood. Recent claims in the literature suggest that the presence of fine fragmentation during steam explosion causes its occurrence. In order to investigate this and understand the root cause of steam explosion, series of experiments were performed with 50 g to 2500 g of CaO-bb>2b>Ob>3b>, a corium simulant in 4.5 litre of water. It was observed that steam explosion may occur even in the absence of fine fragments, which is contrary to the claims in the literature. To investigate further, conversion efficiency analysis was performed. This suggested that the amount of thermal energy converted to mechanical energy is more important deciding factor in explaining the occurrence of steam explosion. The present study discusses the importance of conversion efficiency in deciding steam explosion and also gives a new perspective to look at steam explosion phenomenology.

Evaluation of Type of Nephropathy in Patients of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus

background of the Study, Aims and Objectives: There are very few studies on histological patterns of diabetic nephropathy in our part of country. The aim of this study was to evaluate the renal involvement in patients with Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), assess the histopathological changes and establish a clinico-pathological correlation. Subjects, Method and Materials: Thirty two Type 2 DM patients with nephropathy, after screening consecutive hundred(100) Type 2 Diabetics admitted to the Medicine Department were evaluated for renal involvement by kidney biopsy and histopathological study. Statistical analysis was done by student’s t-test, chi-square and linear regression analysis. Results: Thirty two patients (32) with diabetic nephropathy (20 males and 12 females) formed the study group out of hundred (100) consecutive Type-2 diabetes mellitus patients (58 males and 42 females) admitted to Medicine Department of SCb Medical College Hospital, Cuttack. The frequency of occurrence of clinical diabetic nephropathy was 32%. Most of the patients were having duration of DM of 6-10 years (87.5%). Pedal edema was found in 96.87%, hypertension in 87.5% patients respectively. Regression analysis showed that durations of DM and HbA1c were the two significant risk factors (P Histopathologically, diffuse glomerulosclerosis was the most common form of renal abnormality found in 93.75% followed by nodular glomerulosclerosis in 62.50% with overlap in many patients, membranous nephropathy in 12.5% and focal necrotising glomerulonephritis in 6.25% respectively. There was no statistically significant clinicopathological correlation observed between clinical and biochemical parameters in patients harbouring the two predominant histological types of nephropathy i.e. diffuse and nodular glomerulosclerosis with respect to age, sex, duration of diabetes, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, HbA1c, 24 hour urinary protein, creatinine clearance, serum urea, serum creatinine or lipid

The effects of breakup reactions on elastic and α-production channels for the ^6Li＋^116Sn system have been investigated at energies below and near the Coulomb barrier. The angular distributions of α-particle production differential cross sections have been obtained at several projectile energies between 22 and 40 MeV. The measured breakup α-particle differential cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions have been compared with the predictions of continuum-discretized coupled channels（CDCC） calculations. The influence of breakup coupling has also been investigated by extracting dynamic polarization potentials（DPP） from the CDCC calculations. From the predictions of CDCC calculations the relative importance of the nuclear, Coulomb, and total breakup contributions have also been investigated. The nuclear breakup couplings are observed to play an important role in comparison to the Coulomb breakup for the direct breakup mechanisms associated in the reaction of ~6Li projectile with ^（116）Sn target nuclei. The influence of strong nuclear breakup coupling exhibits suppression in the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak. The direct breakup cross sections from the CDCC calculations under-predict the measured α-particle differential cross sections at all energies. This suggests that the measured α particles may also have contributions from other possible breakup reaction channels.

Self monitoring of blood glucose and its association with glycaemic control and lipid levels in type 2 diabetic patients aged 40 - 75 in Trinidad and Tobago

This study was done to assess whether self monitoring of blood glucose is associated with better glycaemic control in type 2 diabetic Trinidadians. Data was collected from 146 type 2 diabetics via interviews and medical files. Variables extracted included fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and lipid profile. Recent users of the glucometer had better glycemic control compared with longstanding users (HbA1c: 8.4% ± 0.28% vs 9.4% ± 0.62%). Diabetics using a glucometer for >11 years had the highest cholesterol (234 ± 27mg/dL) while those using it 6 months to 5 yrs had the lowest values (206 ± 8 mg/dL). Using the glucometer occasionally or once a week had little impact on these indices. Usage of insulin preparation was positively correlated with HbA1c (r = 0.295;p = 0.001) while those relying on oral hypoglycaemic agents showed a negative correlation (r = -0.265). Further, those who took their medication as prescribed had a lower HbA1c than those who took their medication occasionally. Ironically, HbA1c fell with increasing duration between clinic visits with those visiting annually having the lowest HbA1c (9.0% ± 0.2% vs 7.1% ± 0.7%). Compliance with lifestyle and exercise resulted in lower HbA1c and blood lipids. Poor client education on glucometer usage, administration of insulin and non-compliance with diet and exercise were associated with higher HbA1c.

The overall separation scheme to obtain a chemically purified Cm sample for the search of an α-decay branch in 239Cm (see for preliminary results) is described in Part Ⅰof this contribution. The Part Ⅱdescribes details of the liquid chromatographic separation of a Cm fraction - modeled with lanthanide (Ln) tracers. The main goal of the scheme was to produce fast, reliably and with a high and controllable yield Cm fractions which are free from unwanted α-activities. This separation scheme was not optimized to separate elements which may strongly interfere in γ-spectroscopic studies.

background: Mobility limitations and cognitive impairments which are common with ageing often coexist, causing a reduction in the levels of physical and mental activity and are prognostic of future adverse health events and falls. Consequently, multi-task training paradigms that simultaneously address both mobility and cognition benefit healthy ageing are important to consider in rehabilitation as well as primary prevention. Objectives: An exploratory RCT is being conducted to: a) describe the feasibility and acceptability of the study design and process, procedures, resources and management in two game-based dual-task training programs delivered in the community;b) to explore the lived experiences of the study participants who completed their respective exercise programs. A secondary objective is to obtain preliminary data on the therapeutic effectiveness of the two dual-task training programs. Methods: Thirty healthy older community dwelling participants aged 70 - 85 with previous history of falls will be recruited and randomized to either dual- task treadmill walking (experimental group) or dual-task recumbent bicycle (control group). Data analysis: The qualitative data will be analyzed by two investigators using a content analysis approach. For the quantitative data, outcome measures will be collected pre and post intervention and included measures to assess core balance, spatial-temporal gait variables, visual tracking and cognitive function, as well as, balance and gait analysis under dual-task conditions. Discussion: This research will demonstrate the feasibility of the dual-task training programs in the community, and demonstrate the system’s ability to improve targeted and integrated (dual-task) aspects of balance, mobility, gaze, and cognitive performance. A blended analysis of balance, mobility gaze and cognition will also contribute to a better understanding of the functional consequences of decline in physical and mental skills with age.
