Human sperm immobilization effect of Carica papaya seed extracts: an in vitro study

Aim: To examine if the seed extracts of Carica papaya, which showed anfispermatogenic/sperm immobilizationproperties in animal models, could cause human sperm immobilization in vitro. Methods: Chloroform extract, ben-zene chromatographic fraction of the chloroform extract, its methanol and ethyl acetate sub-fractions and the isolatedcompounds from the sub-fractions i. e., ECP 1 & 2 and MCP 1 & 2, of the seeds of Carica papaya were used at con-centrations of 0.1%, 0.5%, 1% and 2%. Sperm motility was assessed immediately after addition of extracts and ev-ery 5 minutes thereafter for 30 minutes. Results: There were dose-dependent spermicidal effects showing an instantfall in the sperm motility to less than 20% at 2% concentration. Isolated compounds ECP 1 & 2 were more effective in-ducing a motility of less than 10%. Many of the spermatozoa became vibratory on the spot. Total inhibition of motilitywas observed within 20-25 rain at all concentrations of all products. Scanning and transmission electron microscopyrevealed deleterious changes in the plasma membrane of the head and mid-piece of spermatozoa. Sperm viability testand the number of abnormal spermatozoa after completion of incubation suggested that the spermatozoa were *** effects were spermicidal but not spermiostatic as revealed by the sperm revival test. Conclusion: The results re-veal spermicidal activity in vitro of the seed extracts of Carica papaya.

Objective:To determine whether the OraQuick(?).HIV-1/2 Assay(OraSure Technologies, Inc.,Bethlehem,PA,USA) in sputum is a valid tool for HIV surveillance among TB patients. Methods:A cross sectional study was carried out on sputa of patients diagnosed with *** were tested for antibodies to HIV using OraQuick. HIV-1/2 Assay(OraSure Technologies,Inc.,Bethlehem,PA,USA).The results were compared with results of serum ***:Compared to serum ELISA,the OraQuick(?).HIV-1/2 Assay in sputum specimens reported 90%sensitivity(9/10)and 100%specificity(307/307),with a positive predictive value of 100%(95%CI:66.37%-100.00%)and a negative predictive value of 99.68%(95%CI:98.20%-99.99%). Conclusions:This testing method may provide a useful strategy for conducting HIV surveillance in possible co-infected TB patients at peripheral *** there is no investment on infrastructure,it may be possible for paramedical health professionals to carry out the test. particularly in areas with low HIV endemicity.

CFD evaluation of thermal convection inside the DACON convection sensor in actual space flight

A CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) model has been developed using the commercial CFD package FLUENT for the thermal convection inside air filled cylindrical DACON sensor, where the onboard time dependent gravitational micro acceleration has been considered. Time dependent, curve fitted gravitational accelera-tion in x- and y-axes from published data have been incorporated in FLUENT through a User Defined Function (UDF), developed in C which includes space craft rotation. At the sensor plane the two-dimensional flow has also been visualized. A good agreement is between simu-lation and published experimental data. Last but not the least, for checking its response to suffi-ciently strong perturbations in an orbital flight, physical and numerical experiments are carried out where an astronaut swung the sensor in hands along the y axis with amplitude of 10cm and a frequency of 0.2 Hz. A good qualitative validation has been achieved between CFD and actual experimental results.

Detection of Cd<sup>2+</sup>Ions Using Surface Plasmon Coupled Emission on Engineered Silver-α Nano Alumina Thin Film Hybrids

We report the first time fabrication of a silver-α nano alumina thin film hybrid and the observation of the Surface Plasmon Coupled Emission (SPCE) phenomenon in these substrates. We report an “8” fold enhancement in the intensity of the coupled emission signal with respect to the isotropic fluorescence signal. The coupled emission signal displayed a strong p-polarized (92%, p-polarized) output and directionality, which is in accordance with the theory of SPCE. The directionality of emission was found to have strong correlation with the theoretical modeling of minimum reflectivity calculations based on the theory of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). We also report the novel extension of the fabricated substrates towards the economical and sensitive detection of toxic Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions, which are of immense social relevance.

BACkGROUND Pulmonary vein stenosis(PVS)is an uncommon but known cause of morbidity and mortality in adults and children and can be managed with percutaneous revascularization strategies of pulmonary vein balloon angioplasty(PBA)or pulmonary vein stent implantation(PSI).AIM To study the safety and efficacy outcomes of PBA vs PSI in all patient categories with *** We performed a literature search of all studies comparing outcomes of patients evaluated by PBA vs PSI for *** selected all published studies comparing PBA vs PSI for PVS with reported outcomes of restenosis and procedure-related complications in all patient *** adults,PVS following atrial fibrillation ablation and in children PVS related to congenital etiology or post-procedural PVS following total or partial anomalous pulmonary venous return repair were *** patient-centered outcomes were risk of restenosis requiring re-intervention and procedural-related *** metaanalysis was performed by computing odds ratios(ORs)using the random effects model based on underlying statistical *** Eight observational studies treating 768 severe PVS in 487 patients met our inclusion *** age range of patients was 6 months to 70 years and 67%were *** primary outcome of the re-stenosis requiring re-intervention occurred in 196 of 325 veins in the PBA group and 111 of 443 veins in the PSI *** to PSI,PBA was associated with a significantly increased risk of re-stenosis(OR 2.91,95%CI:1.15-7.37,P=0.025,I2=79.2%).Secondary outcomes of the procedurerelated complications occurred in 7 of 122 patients in the PBA group and 6 of 69 in the PSI *** were no statistically significant differences in the safety outcomes between the two groups(OR:0.94,95%CI:0.23-3.76,P=0.929,I^(2)=0.0%).CONCLUSION Across all patient categories with PVS,PSI is associated with reduced risk of re-intervention and is as safe as PBA and should be considered first-line ther
