Loc.tion: The study area was loc.ted at 850 m a.s.l., fifteen kilometers (15 km) to the west of Salamanca c.ty, Spain, in a dehesa-like woodland. Methods: The field experiment was installed in Spring 1996 (May). The plots represented former agric.ltural lands c.opped with (a rotation of) monoc.ltures and abandoned right at the beginning of the experiment after the last c.op was harvested in 1995. Before in-stalling plots, the fields were harrowed and equalized. The treatments (nc-natural c.lonization, LD-low diversity seed mixture and HD-high diversity seed mixture) were randomly alloc.ted to the plots in eac. bloc.. The experiment was organised ac.ord-ing to a bloc. design with five replic.te bloc.s. Within eac. bloc., four plots measur-ing 10 × 10 m were marked out and eac. of the three treatments was randomly as-signed to one plot. All plots were separated by 2 m walkways. Results: The c.mpetitive ability of the sown spec.es in different mixtures in LD, valued on the basis of their performance in HD, is a good predic.or of their ability to suppress the weed c.ops spe-c.es. This was also c.rroborated by the high relationship between the effic.ency of the sown spec.es in both treatments of spec.es mixture (R2 = 0.51, F (1, 33) = 34.56, P c.nclusions: The increase of c.lonizing spec.es c.ver was signific.ntly lower in LD, whic. again supported the increase of biomass in 1998, being also lower in HD. Therefore, this increase in the c.mmunity is more prominent in LD treatments. The effec. of sown spec.es was not so important in this increase.

对腹足纲软体动物罗曼蜗牛Helix pomatia的氧运输蛋白(βc.血清蛋白)的功能单位d,e和f中的一个半胱氨酸—组氨酸之间的硫醚桥键进行了研究。以该βc.血清蛋白为载体,通过限制性胰蛋白酶水解,产生片段a-c.ef,以及功能单位d,g,和h。以片段ef降解后的产物为研究对象,通过亲合色谱的分离纯化,得到功能单位e和f。通过对羧甲基化功能单位d的胰蛋白酶和链霉蛋白酶水解,得到一个含有硫醚桥键的4肽。同样在吡啶乙基化功能单位e和f的胰蛋白酶水解产物中也分离得到一个含有相同硫醚桥键的小肽。因此一个半胱氨酸—组氨酸之间硫醚桥键的存在似乎是腹足纲软体动物罗曼蜗牛Helix pomatia氧运输蛋白(βc.血清蛋白)功能单位的一个共有的特征。

Molybdenum oxodithioc.rbamate was prepared as thin films whic. were deposited on sodalime glass a single solid sourc. prec.rsor for molybdenum oxysulphide substrates using metal organic.c.emic.l vapour deposition （MOc.D） tec.nique at a temperature of 420~c. Rutherford bac.sc.ttering spec.rosc.py （RBS） was used to determine the elemental c.mposition of the film whic. showed that the films c.ntained large amounts of oxygen. The large amount of oxygen was attributed to the large abundance of oxygen in the starting material. A direc. optic.l energy gap of 3.31 eV was obtained from the analysis of the absorption spec.rum. The sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py （SeM） mic.ographs of the films showed that the films were c.ntinuous and porous. An estimated average size of the grains was below 5 #m. X-ray diffrac.ion （XRD） showed that the deposited films were c.ystalline in nature.

The extrac.ion of the physic.l parameters of long period gratings from the spec.ral response is not an easy proc.ss. We present a demodulation tec.nique to synthesize the physic.l parameters of a long period grating rec.rded in an optic.l fibre. The demodulation is ac.ieved through the implementation of a genetic.algorithm. The extrac.ed parameters are in agreement with the typic.l values known for long period gratings.

Betulinic.ac.d is a pentac.c.ic.triterpene found in many plant spec.es,among others in the bark of white birc. Betula *** ac.d was reported to display a wide range of biologic.l effec.s, including antiviral,antiparasitic.antibac.erial antic.ncer and anti-inflammatory *** aim of study to observe the immunomodulatory effec.s of betulinic.ac.d,male and female Balb/c.mic.(7-8 weeks old) were administered betulinic.ac.d per os for 5 days with the dose of 0.5,5 and 50mg/kg/body *** studies show that there is a relationship between the stimulating effec. induc.d by betulinic.ac.d and the dose of drug as well as the time of lasting *** c.mparison with the c.ntrol group,betulinic.ac.d c.uld signific.ntly enhance the total number of iymphoc.tes,the weight ratio of spleen and mesenteric.lymph nodes,the perc.ntage of c.4 in thymus and c.19 in spleen and mesenteric.lymph nodes,the perc.ntage ratio of c.4/c.8 in spleen and mesenteric.lymph *** strongest stimulating effec. was noted on day 3 after last administration of betulinic.ac.d at a dose of 0.5mg/kg at 24 h intervals for 5 times. Betulinic.ac.d also c.uld increase the number of PFc.plaque forming c.ll) at a dose of 5mg/kg,but signific.ntly dec.ease anti-SRBc.haemagglutinin titre at a dose of 0.5mg/*** results suggest that betulinic.ac.d is a possible immune stimulant and may strengthen the immune response of its host.

A study was c.nduc.ed to evaluate the aboveground biomass, nutrient c.ntent and the perc.ntages of myc.rrhizal c.lonization in euc.lyptus c.maldulensis and euc.lyptus grand＆ plantations in the semiarid region （ 15° 09′ S 43° 49′ W） in the north of the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Results show that the total above-ground biomass （dry matter） was 33.6 ***^-1 for e. c.maldulensis and 53.1 Mg·ha^-1 for e. grandis. The biomass of the stem wood, leaves, branches, and stein bark for e. c.maldulens ac.ounted for 64.4%, 19.6%, 15.4%, and 0.6% of the total biomass, respec.ively （Table 2）; meanwhile a similar partition of the total above-ground biomass was also found for e. grand＆. The dry matter of leaves and branches of e. c.maldulensis ac.ounted for 35% of total biomass, and the c.ntents of N, P, K, c., Mg, and S in leaves and branches ac.ounted for 15.5%, 0.7%, 12.3%, 22.6%, 1.9%, and 1.4% of those in total above-ground biomass, respec.ively. In the trunk （bark and wood）, nutrient ac.umulation in general was lower. Nutrient c.ntent of e. grand＆ presented little variation c.mpared with that ore. c.maJd^llensis. Wood loc.lized in superior parts of trunk presented a higher c.ncentration of P and bark c.ntained signific.nt amounts of nutrients, espec.ally in e. grand＆. This indic.ted that leaving vegetal waste is of importance on the site in reduc.ng the loss of tree produc.ivity in this semi-arid region. The two spec.es showed myc.trophy.

Bac.ground： The overall breeding objec.ive for a nuc.eus swine selec.ion program is to improve c.ossbred c.mmerc.al performance. Most genetic.improvement programs are based on an assumed high degree of positive relationship between purebred performance in a nuc.eus herd and their relatives＇ c.ossbred performance in a c.mmerc.al herd. The objec.ive of this study was to examine the relationship between purebred and c.ossbred sow longevity performance. Sow longevity was defined as a binary trait with a suc.ess oc.urring if a sow remained in the herd for a c.rtain number of parities and including the c.mulative number born alive as a measure of reproduc.ive suc.ess. Heritabilities, genetic.c.rrelations, and phenotypic.c.rrelations were estimated using ***： Results indic.ted little to no genetic.c.rrelations between c.ossbred and purebred reproduc.ive *** indic.tes that selec.ion for longevity or lifetime performance at the nuc.eus level may not result in improved longevity and lifetime performance at the c.ossbred level. early parity performance was highly c.rrelated with lifetime performance indic.ting that an indic.tor trait at an early parity c.uld be used to predic. lifetime performance. This would allow a sow to have her own rec.rd for the selec.ion trait before she has been removed from the ***： Results from this study aid in quantifying the relationship between purebred and c.ossbred performance and provide information for genetic.c.mpanies to c.nsider when developing a selec.ion program where the objec.ive is to improve c.ossbred sow performance. Utilizing c.ossbred rec.rds in a selec.ion program would be the best way to improve c.ossbred sow produc.ivity.

Sexual dysfunction and prostate c.ncer are c.mmon among older men. Few studies explored the assoc.ation between these two illnesses. We examined whether sexual function is assoc.ated with prostate c.ncer risk among older men. Among 448 men undergoing prostate biopsy at the Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital, sexual function was asc.rtained from the expanded prostate c.ncer Index c.mposite sexual assessment. We tested the link between sexual function and prostate c.ncer risk adjusting for multiple demographic.and c.inic.l c.arac.eristic. using logistic.regression. Multinomial logistic.regression was used to test the assoc.ations with risk of low-grade （Gleason 〈6） and high-grade （Gleason 〉7 or 〉4 ＋ 3） disease versus no c.ncer. Of 448 men, 209 （47%） had a positive biopsy; these men were less likely to be white （43% vs 55%, P=0.013）, had higher prostate-spec.fic.antigen （PSA）（6.0 vs 5.4 ng ml-1, P 〈 0.001）, but with lower mean sexual function sc.re （47 vs 54, P = 0.007）. There was no difference in age, BMI, pac. years smoked, history of heart disease and/or diabetes. After adjusting for baseline differences, sexual function was linked with a dec.eased risk of overall prostate c.ncer risk （OR. 0.91 per lO-point c.ange in sexual function, P= 0.004） and high-grade disease whether defined as Gleason ≥7 （OR： 0.86, P= 0.001） or 〉4 ＋ 3 （OR： 0.85, P= 0.009）. Sexual function was unrelated to low-grade prostate c.ncer （OR： 0.94, P = 0.13）. Thus, among men undergoing prostate biopsy, higher sexual function was assoc.ated with a dec.eased risk of overall and high-grade prostate c.ncer. c.nfirmatory studies are needed.
