Deployment of Pre-Industrial Autonomous Microbe Sensor in Saudi Arabia’s Injection Seawater System

Microbial growth in water injection systems can lead to many problems, including biofouling, water quality deterioration, injectivity loss, microbial corrosion, and reservoir formation damage. Monitoring of microbial activities is required in any mitigation strategy, enabling operators to apply and adjust countermeasures properly and in due time. In this study, the pre-industrial autonomous microbe sensor (AMS) was constructed with technical improvements from the prototype for increased sensitivity, durability, robustness, and maintainability. The pre-industrial AMS was lab validated, field proven, and deployed at critical locations of seawater injection network for automated detection of microorganisms under the Saudi Arabia’s harsh environment. An excellent correlation between AMS measurement data (fluorescence count) and actual count of microbial cell number under microscope was established (coefficient of determination, R2 > 0.99) for converting AMS fluorescence count to cell numbers (cell ml-1) in the injection seawater. The pre-industrial AMS only required monthly maintenance with solutions refill, and was able to cope with hot summer months even without protection in an air-conditioned shelter. The study team recommended wider deployment of the online AMS for real-time monitoring of bacteria numbers in the various strategic locations in Saudi Aramco’s complex seawater injection network, as an integral component of pipeline corrosion and leak mitigation program.

Axially variable-length solid element of absolute nodal coordinate formulation

An axially variable-length solid element with eight nodes is proposed by integrating the arbitrary lagrangian-Eulerian (AlE) formulation and the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF). In addition to the nodal positions and slopes of eight nodes, two material coordinates in the axial direction are used as the generalized coordinates. As a consequence, the nodes in the AlE-ANCF are not associated with any specific material points and the axial length of the solid element can be varied over time. These two material coordinates give rise to a variable mass matrix and an additional inertial force vector. Computationally efficient formulae of the additional inertial forces and elastic forces, as well as their Jacobians, are also derived. The dynamic equation of a flexible multibody system (FMBS) with variable-length bodies is presented. The maximum and minimum lengths of the boundary elements of an FMBS have to be appropriately defined to ensure accuracy and non-singularity when solving the dynamic equation. Three numerical examples of static and dynamic problems are given to validate the variable-length solid elements of AlE-ANCF and show their capability.

Field scale interaction and nutrient exchange between surface water and shallow groundwater in the Baiyang lake region,North China Plain

Fertilizer input for agricultural food production, as well as the discharge of domestic and industrial water pollutants, increases pressures on locally scarce and vulnerable water resources in the North China Plain. In order to：（a） understand pollutant exchange between surface water and groundwater,（b） quantify nutrient loadings, and（c） identify major nutrient removal pathways by using qualitative and quantitative methods, including the geochemical model PHREEQC） a one-year study at a wheat（Triticum aestivum l.） and maize（Zea mays l.） double cropping system in the Baiyang lake area in Hebei Province, China, was undertaken. The study showed a high influence of low-quality surface water on the shallow aquifer. Major inflowing pollutants into the aquifer were ammonium and nitrate via inflow from the adjacent Fu River（up to 29.8 mg/l NH4-N and 6.8 mg/l NO3-N）, as well as nitrate via vertical transport from the field surface（up to 134.8 mg/l NO3-N in soil water）. Results from a conceptual model show an excess nitrogen input of about 320 kg/ha/a. Nevertheless,both nitrogen species were only detected at low concentrations in shallow groundwater,averaging at 3.6 mg/l NH4-N and 1.8 mg/l NO3-N. Measurement results supported by PHREEQC-modeling indicated cation exchange, denitrification, and anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with partial denitrification as major nitrogen removal pathways. Despite the current removal capacity, the excessive nitrogen fertilization may pose a future threat to groundwater quality. Surface water quality improvements are therefore recommended in conjunction with simultaneous monitoring of nitrate in the aquifer, and reduced agricultural N-inputs should be considered.

Quantities of comorbidities affects physical, but not mental health related quality of life in type 1 diabetes with confirmed polyneuropathy

BACKGROUND A large number of adults with long-term type 1 diabetes are affected by symmetrical peripheral neuropathy.These complications increase socioeconomic expenses and diminish the individual quality of life.The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey(SF-36)is a generic patient reported questionnaire,measuring mental and physical health related quality of life.We hypothesized that diabetic neuropathy would decrease physical and mental quality of life measured with SF-36,and that clinical appearance may be associated with the decline.AIM To investigate if diabetic neuropathy would decrease physical and mental quality of life measured with SF-36,and if clinical appearance may be associated with the decline.METHODS Forty-eight adults[age 50±9 years,10 females,disease duration 32(14-51)years]with verified diabetic symmetrical peripheral neuropathy and 21 healthy participants(age 51±6 years,6 females)underwent standardised nerve conduction testing and completed the SF-36 questionnaire.Furthermore,disease duration,number of comorbidities,both diabetes related and nondiabetes related,vibration perception threshold,number of hypoglycaemic events,HbA1c and administration way of insulin was notified.RESUlTS In comparison to healthy subjects,patients’mental composite score was not significantly diminished(51.9±8.9 vs 53.1±5.5,P=0.558),while the physical composite score was(46.3±11.7 vs 54.6±3.3,P=0.002).As expected,the overall physical health related symptoms in patients were associated to total number of comorbidities(Plation to diabetes(P=0.0002)and HbA1c(P=0.005)as well as comorbidities not related to diabetes(P=0.0006).CONClUSION The finding of this study emphasises the importance of focusing on quality of life in adults with diabetes and especially in those with multiple comorbidities as well as the possibility of HbA1c as a biomarker for severe complication.

Effect of a 26-month floorball training on male elderly's cardiovascular fitness, glucose control, body composition, and functional capacity

Background: Floorball training offers a motivating and socially stimulating team activity for older adults, and 12 weeks of floorball training twice a week among men aged 65—76 years have been shown to have positive effects on a number of physiological parameters important for health. However, the effect of long-term participation in floorball training among male elderly has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of 26-month self-organized regular participation in floorball training on cardiovascular fitness, body composition, blood lipids, glucose control, and physical function among recreationally active men aged 66—78 years.Methods: After completing a 12-week randomized and controlled intervention with floorball and petanque training in the autumn 2014 or spring2015, 15 subjects chose to participate in floorball training(floorball group, FG), whereas 16 subjects resumed their usual lifestyle(control group,CG). FG took part in self-organized floorball training 1.7 sessions of 40 min/week, and CG continued their normal recreationally active lifestyle during a 26-month follow-up period. At baseline and after the follow-up period subjects were tested for cardiovascular fitness, glucose control(resting blood samples), body composition dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA-scanning), and functional capacity.Results: In FG, the decline in maximal oxygen uptake(VO_(2max)) during the follow-up period was lower(242 ± 379 ml/min, p = 0.01), blood glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) increased less(—1.6 ± 2.9 mmol/l, p = 0.02), and leg bone mineral density increased more(0.03 ± 0.05 g/cm^2,p = 0.02) than those in CG. The effects on body mass, total lean body mass, fat mass, blood lipids, and physical function were similar in FG and CG.Conclusion: Approximately twice weekly floorball sessions with 40 min/session over 26-month appear to reduce age-related decline in cardiovascular fitness and glucose control and improve leg bone mineral density, suggesting that long-term participation in floo

Inflammatory pathways of importance for management of inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is a group of chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract comprising Crohn’s disease(CD)and ulcerative colitis(UC).Their etiologies are unknown,but they are characterised by an imbalanced production of pro-inflammatory mediators,e.g.,tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α,as well as increased recruitment of leukocytes to the site of inflammation.Advantages in understanding the role of the inflammatory pathways in IBD and an inadequate response to conventional therapy in a large portion of patients,has over the last two decades lead to new therapies which includes the TNF inhibitors(TNFi),designed to target and neutralise the effect of TNF-α.TNFi have shown to be efficient in treating moderate to severe CD and UC.However,convenient alternative therapeutics targeting other immune pathways are needed for patients with IBD refractory to conventional therapy including TNFi.Indeed,several therapeutics are currently under development,and have shown success in clinical trials.These include antibodies targeting and neutralising interleukin-12/23,small pharmacologic Janus kinase inhibitors designed to block intracellular signaling of several pro-inflammatory cytokines,antibodies targeting integrins,and small anti-adhesion molecules that block adhesion between leukocytes and the intestinal vascular endothelium,reducing their infiltration into the inflamed mucosa.In this review we have elucidated the major signaling pathways of clinical importance for IBD therapy and highlighted the new promising therapies available.As stated in this paper several new treatment options are under development for the treatment of CD and UC,however,no drug fits all patients.Hence,optimisations of treatment regimens are warranted for the benefit of the patients either through biomarker establishment or other rationales to maximise the effect of the broad range of mode-of-actions of the present and future drugs in IBD.

All plant cells are surrounded by a cell wall that provides cohesion,protection,and a means of directional growth to plants.Cellulose microfibrils contribute the main biomechanical scaffold for most of these walls.The biosynthesis of cellulose,which typically is the most prominent constituent of the cell wall and therefore Earth’s most abundant biopolymer,is finely attuned to developmental and environmental cues.Our understanding of the machinery that catalyzes and regulates cellulose biosynthesis has substantially improved due to recent technological advances in,for example,structural biology and microscopy.Here,we provide a comprehensive overview of the structure,function,and regulation of the cellulose synthesis machinery and its regulatory interactors.We aim to highlight important knowledge gaps in the field,and outline emerging approaches that promise a means to close those gaps.

Ternary deep eutectic solvents catalyzed D-glucosamine self-condensation to deoxyfructosazine: NMR study

Ternary deep eutectic solvents(TDESs) comprising choline chloride(Ch Cl), glycerol and l-arginine were synthesized as catalysts and solvents for the conversion of D-glucosamine(GlcNH_(2)) into deoxyfructosazine(DOF). The interactions between these three components in the prepared TDESs were studied by ^(1)H-,^(35)Cl-NMR spectra and ^(1)H diffusion-ordered spectroscopy(DOSY) measurements. The chemical shift changes of active hydrogen in the ^(1)H-NMR spectra of TDES system and widening of signals in the^(35)Cl-NMR spectra confirmed the hydrogen bonding interaction between the components, which was further supported by the decrease of diffusion coefficients(D) of the TDES components according to ^(1)H DOSY measurements. The influences of reaction temperature and l-arginine content in the TDESs on the yield of DOF were also studied. The experimental results have shown that when the molar ratio of Ch Cl, glycerol, and l-arginine was 1:2:0.1, DOF was the major product with a yield of 22.6% at 90℃ for 120 min. The chemical shift titration indicated that the carboxyl group of l-arginine in the TDES is the catalytical active site, so the mechanism of the catalytic reaction between Glc NH_(2) and the TDES was proposed. Moreover, a reaction intermediate, dihydrofructosazine, was identified in the self-condensation reaction of Glc NH_(2) by an in situ ^(1)H NMR technique.

Vole preference of bilberry along gradients of simulated moose density and site productivity

Browsing by large herbivores might either increase or decrease preference for the plant by other herbivores,depending on the plant response.Using a cafeteria test,we studied the preference by root voles(Microtus oeconomus[Pallas,1776])for bilberry(Vaccinium myrtillus l.)previously subjected to 4 levels of simulated moose(Alces alces[linnaeus,1758])density.The different levels of moose density were simulated at population densities relevant for Fennoscandian conditions,in exclosures situated along a site productivity gradient.We expected:(i)voles to prefer bilberry from high productivity sites over low productivity sites;(ii)voles to prefer browsed bilberry,if plants allocate resources to compensatory growth or to avoid browsed bilberry if plants allocate resources to defense;(iii)these effects to increase with increasing simulated moose density;and(iv)the concentration of plant chemicals and the plant morphology to explain vole preference.Specifically,we predicted that voles would prefer:(i)plants with high nitrogen content;(ii)plants with low content of defensive substances;and(iii)tall plants with long shoots.Voles preferred bilberry from the high productivity sites compared to the low productivity sites.We also found an interaction between site productivity and simulated moose density,where voles preferred unbrowsed plants at low productivity sites and intermediate levels of browsing at high productivity sites.There was no effect of plant chemistry or morphology on vole preference.We conclude that moose browsing impacts the food preference of voles.With the current high densities of moose in Fennoscandia,this could potentially influence vole food selection and population dynamics over large geographical areas.
