To achieve the Paris Agreement,China pledged to become“Carbon Neutral”by the 2060s.In addition to massive decarbonization,this would require significant changes in ecosystems toward negative CO_(2)emissions.The ability of coastal blue carbon ecosystems(BCEs),including mangrove,salt marsh,and seagrass meadows,to sequester large amounts of CO_(2)makes their conservation and restoration an important“nature-based solution(NbS)”for climate adaptation and mitigation.In this review,we examine how BCEs in China can contribute to climate mitigation.On the national scale,the BCEs in China store up to 118 Tg C across a total area of 1,440,377 ha,including over 75%as unvegetated tidal flats.The annual sedimental C burial of these BCEs reaches up to 2.06 Tg C year^(−1),of which most occurs in salt marshes and tidal flats.The lateral C flux of mangroves and salt marshes contributes to 1.17 Tg C year^(−1)along the Chinese coastline.Conservation and restoration of BCEs benefit climate change mitigation and provide other ecological services with a value of$32,000 ha^(−1)year^(−1).The potential practices and technologies that can be implemented in China to improve BCE C sequestration,including their constraints and feasibility,are also outlined.Future directions are suggested to improve blue carbon estimates on aerial extent,carbon stocks,sequestration,and mitigation potential.Restoring and preserving BCEs would be a cost-effective step to achieve Carbon Neutral by 2060 in China despite various barriers that should be removed.

Quaternary valley fill deposits in the Upper Satluj Valley of NW Himalaya act as archives of changing climate-tectonic dynamics in a region.Quaternary landforms help in decoding the relationship between climate and tectonics.Kinnaur region is traversed by several active faults and thrusts such as the Kaurik-Chango Fault(KCF)and Sangla Detachment(SD),thereby making upper Satluj Valley tectonically active.Morphotectonic parameters such as width of valley floor(Vfw),Normalized Steepness Index(KSn)and geomorphological evidences such as the presence of huge strath terraces,narrowing of the river valley and palaeolake deposits point towards the tectonically active nature of the terrain.This arid,high elevation region is also climatically sensitive as it falls in a transient climatic zone which receives rainfall only during abnormal monsoon months.Excessive rainfall causes outburst floods,a common phenomenon in the area due to the blocking of headwater in the upper reaches of the Satluj valley.As a result,the Quaternary sequence is modified from time to time.The transition from hypo concentrated deposits to channel deposits and ponding events are prominent in the depositional sequence,resulting from a response to climate.The studied Quaternary sediments reveal that the Trans-Himalayan region of the upper Satluj valley is affected by tectonic-climate variability,making it vulnerable to geohazards.

Iron supplementation during malaria infection in pregnancy and childhood:A review

Malaria presents a significant global public health challenge,with severe malarial anaemia being a primary manifestation of the disease.The understanding of anaemia caused by malaria remains incomplete,making the treatment more complex.Iron is a crucial micronutrient essential for haemoglobin synthesis,oxygen delivery,and other vital metabolic functions in the body.It is indispensable for the growth of human beings,as well as bacteria,protozoa,and viruses in vitro and in vivo.Iron deficiency is among the most common nutritional deficiencies and can have detrimental effects during developmental stages of life.Malaria-induced iron deficiency occurs due to the hemolysis of erythrocytes and the suppression of erythropoiesis,leading to anaemia.Meeting iron requirements is particularly critical during pivotal life stages such as pregnancy,infancy,and childhood.Dietary intake alone may not suffice to meet adequate iron requirements,thus highlighting the vital role of iron supplementation.While iron supplementation can alleviate iron deficiency,it can exacerbate malaria infection by providing additional iron for the parasites.However,in the context of pregnancy and childhood,iron supplementation combined with malaria prevention and treatment has been shown to be beneficial in improving birth outcomes and ensuring proper growth and development,respectively.This review aims to identify the role and impact of iron supplementation in malaria infection during the life stages of pregnancy and childhood.

Visnagin is a furanochromone and one of the most important compound in the Ammi visnaga (L.) Lam (a synonym of Visnaga daucoides Gaertn.) plant,which is used to cure various ailments.Many investigations into the bioactive properties of visnagin have been studied to date.The literature on visnagin demonstrates its biological properties,including anti-inflammatory,anti-diabetic,and beneficial effects in cardiovascular and renal diseases.Moreover,visnagin improves sperm quality parameters,stimulates steroidogenesis,and increases serum gonadotropins and testosterone levels,while decreasing proinflammatory cytokines,oxidative damage,genomic instability,and it modulates apoptosis.Thus,visnagin has emerged as an exciting lead for further research,owing to its potential in various unmet clinical needs.The current review summarized its basic structure,pharmacokinetics,and pharmacological effects,focusing on its mechanisms of action.The review will help to understand the potential of visnagin as an alternative treatment strategy for several diseases and provide insight into research topics that need further exploration for visnagin’s safe clinical use.

This paper presents a novel fuzzy firefly-based intelligent algorithm for load balancing in mobile cloud computing while reducing makespan.The proposed technique implicitly acts intelligently by using inherent traits of fuzzy and firefly.It automatically adjusts its behavior or converges depending on the information gathered during the search process and objective function.It works for 3-tier architecture,including cloudlet and public cloud.As cloudlets have limited resources,fuzzy logic is used for cloudlet selection using capacity and waiting time as input.Fuzzy provides human-like decisions without using any mathematical model.Firefly is a powerful meta-heuristic optimization technique to balance diversification and solution speed.It balances the load on cloud and cloudlet while minimizing makespan and execution time.However,it may trap in local optimum;levy flight can handle it.Hybridization of fuzzy fireflywith levy flight is a novel technique that provides reduced makespan,execution time,and Degree of imbalance while balancing the load.Simulation has been carried out on the Cloud Analyst platform with National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)and Clarknet datasets.Results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms Ant Colony Optimization Queue Decision Maker(ACOQDM),Distributed Scheduling Optimization Algorithm(DSOA),andUtility-based Firefly Algorithm(UFA)when compared in terms of makespan,Degree of imbalance,and Figure of Merit.

Soil salinization affecting different crops is one of the serious threats to global food security.Soil salinity affects 20%and 33%of the total cultivated and irrigated agricultural lands,respectively,and has been reported to caused a global crop production loss of 27.3 billion USD.The conventional approaches,such as using salt-tolerant varieties,saline soil scrapping,flushing,leaching,and adding supplements (e.g.,gypsum and lime),often fail to alleviate stress.In this context,developing diverse arrays of microbes enhancing crop productivity under saline soil conditions without harming soil health is necessary.Various advanced omics approaches have enabled gaining new insights into the structure and metabolic functions of plant-associated beneficial microbes.Various genera of salt-tolerating rhizobacteria ameliorating biotic and abiotic stresses have been isolated from different legumes,cereals,vegetables,and oil seeds under extreme alkaline and saline soil conditions.Rapid progress in rhizosphere microbiome research has revived the belief that plants may be more benefited from their association with interacting diverse microbial communities as compared with individual members in a community.In the last decade,several salt-tolerating plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that improve crop production under salt stress have been exploited for the reclamation of saline agrosystems.This review highlights that the interaction of salt-tolerating microbes with plants improves crop productivity under salinity stress along with potential salt tolerance mechanisms involved and will open new avenues for capitalizing on cultivable diverse microbial communities to strengthen plant salt tolerance and,thus,to refine agricultural practices and production under saline conditions.

Auto-Scaling Framework for Enhancing the Quality of Service in the Mobile Cloud Environments

On-demand availability and resource elasticity features of Cloud computing have attracted the focus of various research domains.Mobile cloud computing is one of these domains where complex computation tasks are offloaded to the cloud resources to augment mobile devices’cognitive capacity.However,the flexible provisioning of cloud resources is hindered by uncertain offloading workloads and significant setup time of cloud virtual machines(VMs).Furthermore,any delays at the cloud end would further aggravate the miseries of real-time tasks.To resolve these issues,this paper proposes an auto-scaling framework(ACF)that strives to maintain the quality of service(QoS)for the end users as per the service level agreement(SLA)negotiated assurance level for service availability.In addition,it also provides an innovative solution for dealing with the VM startup overheads without truncating the running tasks.Unlike the waiting cost and service cost tradeoff-based systems or threshold-rule-based systems,it does not require strict tuning in the waiting costs or in the threshold rules for enhancing the QoS.We explored the design space of the ACF system with the CloudSim simulator.The extensive sets of experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the ACF system in terms of good reduction in energy dissipation at the mobile devices and improvement in the QoS.At the same time,the proposed ACF system also reduces the monetary costs of the service providers.

LOX upregulates FAK phosphorylation to promote metastasis in osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor that commonly occurs in the pediatric population.Despite the use of chemotherapy and surgery,metastasis remains to be the leading cause of death in patients with osteosarcoma.We have previously reported that cytoplasmic mislocalization of p27 is associated with a poor outcome in osteosarcoma.In this study,we further show that lysyl oxidase(LOx)expression was associated with p27 mislocalization.Lox is an enigmatic molecule that acts as a tumor suppressor or a metastatic promoter;however,its role in osteosarcoma is still unclear.Hence,we performed both in vitro and in vivo analyses to dissect the role of Lox in osteosarcoma.The result of our survival analysis indicated that Lox expression significantly correlated with a poor outcome in osteosarcoma with or without controlling for the initial metastasis status(P<0.05).Functionally,we found that higher LoX expression promoted osteosarcoma cell proliferation,migration,and invasiveness in vitro and produced a higher number of mice with pulmonary metastases in an orthotopic xenograft mouse model.Mechanistically,phospho-FAK was increased in osteosarcoma cells with high LOX expression.Our results further showed that FAK inhibition significantly reduced tumor cell proliferation and migration in vitro as well as LoX-mediated metastasis in mice.Together,our findings suggest that there is a novel link between p27 mislocalization and LOX expression.LOX plays a pivotal role in osteosarcoma metastasis by upregulating FAK phosphorylation.FAK inhibition may constitute a promising therapeutic strategy to reduce the development of metastasis in osteosarcoma with Lox overexpression.

Aspergillus is a group of conidial fungi,isolated from soil and litter,cause serious diseases in humans and animals.This ubiquitous fungus is prevalent in the air and inhalation of fungal spores is common.Fungal diseases from Aspergillus became a major health problem and are difficult to manage because they tend to be chronic and invasive,hard to diagnose and difficult to exterminate with antifungal drugs.Although,immune responses play vital roles in monitoring the fate of fungal infections and regulation of the immune responses against fungal infections might be an effective approach for controlling and reducing the pathological damages.Recent studies have shown that microRNAs(miRNAs)are assembly of regulators which modulates the immune responses during fungal infections through diversified cellular mechanisms.These small non-coding RNA sequences regulate gene expression,mostly at the post-transcriptional level and have emerged as the controller of gene expression of at least 30%human genes.Therefore,miRNAs might be considered as one of the potential goals in immunotherapy for fungal infections.The objective of this review is to explore the role of miRNAs in host recognition processes and understanding the modulation of regulatory pathways in response to Aspergillus exposure.
