Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury still represents an important cause of morbidity following hepatic surgery and limits the use of marginal livers in hepatic transplantation. Transient blood flow interruption followed by reperfusion protects tissues against damage induced by subsequent I/R. This process known as ischemic pre-conditioning (IP) depends upon intrinsic cytoprotective systems whose activation can inhibit the progression of irreversible tissue damage. Compared to other organs,liver IP has additional features as it reduces inflammation and promotes hepatic regeneration. Our present understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in liver IP is still largely incomplete. Experimental studies have shown that the protective effects of liver IP are triggered by the release of adenosine and nitric oxide and the subsequent activation of signal networks involving protein kinases such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase,protein kinase C δ/ε and p38 MAP kinase,and transcription factors such as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3,nuclear factor-κb and hypoxia-inducible factor 1. This article offers an overview of the molecular events underlying the preconditioning effects in the liver and points to the possibility of developing pharmacological approaches aimed at activating the intrinsic protective systems in patients undergoing liver surgery.

Colorectal cancer （CRC） is one of the most common neoplasms and an important cause of mortality worldwide （http：//globocan. ***]）. Approximately 35% of the variation in CRC susceptibility is likely due to heritable factors （Lichtenstein et al., 2000}. Genetic variations in the human genome include single nucleotide variants （SNVs）, short insertions and deletions, and larger structural variants resulting in gain or loss of genomic DNA larger than 1 kb, such as copy number variants （CNVs）. Leaving aside the importance of CNVs in sporadic tumor development, these variants can also be present in the germline DNA of healthy individuals from the general population and be considered polymorphic.

Emerging and re-emerging human infectious diseases:A systematic review of the role of wild animals with a focus on public health impact

Infectious diseases continue to impose unpredictable burdens on global health and economies, a subject that requires constant research and updates. In this sense, the objective of the present article was to review studies on the role of wild animals as reservoirs and/or dispersers of etiological agents of human infectious diseases in order to compile data on the main wild animals and etiological agents involved in zoonotic outbreaks. A systematic review was carried out using PRISMA guidelines, using the PubMed, Scopus and SciELO platforms as data banks. The descriptors used were "zoonosis", "human infectious diseases" and "wild animals". The results show that wild animals(mainly bats, birds and primates) play an important role in the dissemination of etiological agents(mainly viruses, as a new coronavirus called 2019 Novel Coronavirus) in extensive geographic regions. Moreover, these wild animal organisms can act as the site for essential biotic synergy among several pathogenic microorganisms, promoting a higher rate of adaptation, mutation and even genetic recombination, with consequent stimulation of new strains and subtypes, inducing new infectious agents with unknown virulent potential. In conclusion, the monitoring of these diseases and adequate preparation for possible epidemics and pandemics are fundamental conditions for the mitigation of their future impact. The zoonotic threat of these etiological agents and the impact on public health can be enormous as shown by the ongoing epidemic of 2019 novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV) infections.

bismuth teUuride （bi2Te3） is one of the most important commercial thermoelectric materials. In recent years, the discovery of topologically protected surface states in bi chalcogenides has paved the way for their application in nanoelectronics. Determination of the fracture toughness plays a crucial role for the potential application of topological insulators in flexible electronics and nanoelectro- mechanical devices. Using depth-sensing nanoindentation tests, we investigated for the first time the fracture toughness of bulk single crystals of bi2Te3 topological insulators, grown using the bridgmantockbarger method. Our results highlight one of the possible pitfalls of the technology based on topological insulators.

Effects of N-acetylcysteine on growth,viability and reactive oxygen species levels in small antral follicles cultured in vitro

Objective:To investigate the effects of different concentrations of N-acetylcysteine on follicular growth and morphology,as well as on viability,levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS)and meiotic progression of oocytes from in vitro cultured bovine early antral ***:Isolated early antral follicles(about 500μm)were cultured in TCM-199+alone or supplemented with 1.0,5.0 or 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine at 38.5℃with 5%CO_(2) for 8 *** diameters were evaluated at day 0,4 and 8 of *** the end of culture,the levels of ROS,chromatin configuration and viability(calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1 staining)were investigated in the cumulus-oocyte *** of follicle diameters between treatments were *** on percentages of morphologically normal follicles,growth rates and chromatin configuration in different treatments were ***:An increase in follicular diameters after culture in all treatments was observed,except for follicles cultured with 25.0 mM *** microscopy showed that oocytes cultured in all treatments were stained positively with calcein AM,and that 5.0 mM N-acetylcysteine reduced fluorescence for ethidium *** levels of ROS in oocytes from follicles cultured with 1.0 mM N-acetylcysteine showed a significant reduction compared to other *** presence of N-acetylcysteine in culture medium did not influence the rates of oocyte at the germinal vesicle ***:N-acetylcysteine at concentrations of 1.0 and 5.0 mM reduces ROS levels and staining for ethidium homodimer-1 in in vitro cultured follicles,respectively,while 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine decreases follicular growth and the percentages of continuously growing follicles.
