＜正＞ A new prosthetic valve design concept is proposed which fully utilizes the aeronautic wing design guidelines. The design objective of this aero-shaped valve （ASV） lies in lowering the valve-induced damage to the blood cells and minimizing the impact momentum between the occluder and the strut of the valve. Based on the theory of wing sections and the analogy of flight stability, an optimization procedure, which integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics （CFD）, Artificial Neural Network （ANN）, and Genetic Algorithm （GA） is developed to search for an optimal occluder shape and a minimal-moment rotating center. Comparing the optimal ASV-1 design to the baseline plate occluder, ASV-1 has better hemodynamic characteristics of lower pressure loss and Reynolds stresses. Moreover, ASV-1 has a nearly zero-moment when reaching the maximum opening angle, resulting in an extremely low impact force. The concern of strut failure and valve sound can thus be greatly relieved. The present work demonstrates that an optimization procedure can help improve the prosthetic valve performance to an extent that cannot be enjoyed by simple intuitive design methods.
