Variability and Synchronism of Leaf Appearance and Leaf Elongation Rates of Eleven Contrasting Rice Genotypes

Leaf appearance and leaf elongation rates in rice play an essential role in determining the development of the plants’ architecture which affects their adaptability to varying environments. This study aimed to characterize the rates of leaf appearance and elongation on all leaves of the main culms of rice plants for 11 contrasting varieties and to determine if the decrease in the leaf appearance rate was related to a simultaneous decrease in the rate of leaf elongation. Forty four 13-L pots were sown with one plant from one genotype and laid out in 4 randomized complete blocks. The experiment, conducted inside a greenhouse, was repeated twice. The increase in length of the leaves expanding on the main stems was monitored daily until flag leaf. Data were used to estimate the rates of leaf appearance and leaf elongation. Significant variability in the rate of leaf appearance, rate of leaf elongation, and leaf length was found across varieties. The kinetics of leaf appearance had linear phases intermediated by a curvilinear phase, without sharp changes in the phyllochron duration. Maximal leaf elongation rate (LER) of all genotypes (except for one) increased linearly with leaf rank until it reached its maximum value at leaf 8 to 10 (11 - 12 for Azucena) where it sta.ilized before decreasing linearly with leaf rank for the last leaves. Finally, both rates of leaf appearance and leaf elongation evolved with time more smoothly than expected so no sharp decrease in LER occurred at the time of the decrease in leaf appearance rate of the last leaves. However, the trilinear model fits the data well enough to remain useful in efficiently comparing the leaf appearance kinetics of contrasting varieties.

Effects of AG1 and AG2 QTLs on Nonstructural Carbohydrate and Seed Management Options for Rice Seedling Growth and Esta.lishment under Flooding Stress

Rice(Oryza sativa)plants acquired excess photosynthates in the form of nonstructural carbohydrates(NSCs)in their stems and *** keen interest in rice NSC,the dynamics of NSC accumulation,translocation and re-accumulation have not yet been well ***1 and AG2 QTLs associated with flooding tolerance through catalyzing sta.ch into soluble sugar in germinating *** we conducted three experiments,greenhouse and field to lay the groundwork for large-scale diversity studies on grain NSC and some agronomic traits under direct-seeded rice(DSR)system,using elite lines incorporating AG1,AG2 and AG1-AG2 QTLs into the popular varieties PSB Rc82 and Ciherang-Sub1 along with the donors Kho Hlan On(AG1)and Ma-Zhan Red(AG2).In germinating seedlings,soluble sugars increased,while sta.ch concentration decreased gradually especially in the tolerant checks and AG1-AG2 introgression lines under flooded *** sugar accumulation in stem sta.ted to increase from the vegetative sta.e and peaked at the panicle initiation sta.e then gradually decreased towards the maturity *** Sub1-AG lines had higher sugar and sta.ch concentrations at different growth sta.es than other genotypes in wet season 2016 and dry season *** survival rate was positively correlated with the stem NSC at the early vegetative sta.e(21 days after sowing),and stem NSC was positively associated with plant height at different growth *** the tested seeding rate,the most suitable seeding rate,4 g/m2 with shallow burial depth(0.5 cm),resulted in better seedling esta.lishment,relatively higher seedling vigor index and higher leaf area index under flooding in DSR *** of AG1-AG2 QTLs had no any negative impact on nonstructural carbohydrate,germination rate,and growth and biomass production.
