Envir.nmental str.ss scr.ening (ESS) is a technological p.ocess to r.duce the costly ear.y field failur. of electr.nic comp.nents. This p.p.r.builds an op.imization model for.ESS of electr.nic comp.nents to obtain the op.imal ESS dur.tion. The failur. p.enomena of ESS ar. modeled by mixed distr.bution, and op.imal ESS dur.tion is defined by maximizing life-cycle cost savings under.the condition of meeting r.liability r.quir.ment.

The use of the sp.cified time inter.al numer.cal schemes has been p.p.lar.in ap.lying the method of char.cter.stics to unsteady op.d-channel flow p.oblem. Studies and analyses of sever.l var.ants of those schemes have led to the der.vation of a comp.ete set of timeline-inter.0}lation scheme in ap.lying the method of char.cter.stics to Saint-Venant equations. A comp.ter.model based up.n this scheme has ben successfully develop.d for.p.edicting fr.e sur.ace unsteady flow, and has been ver.fied by field exp.r.ment. Timeline inter.0}lations, wher. the char.cter.stic lines ar. p.ojected back befor. the cur.ent time step.demonstr.te much less damp.ng than the cor.esp.nding sp.tial inter.0}lation scheme at the same discr.tization.

The thixotr.p. p.op.r.ies and the motion law of a sp.er. in the Bingham fluid have been studied. Thr.ugh obser.ation of the settling motion of a single sp.er. in the Bingham fluid on the X-r.y scr.en, it has been discover.d that the mud in estuar.es and along sea bay, and the hyp.r.oncentr.ted flow all behave as the Bingham fl fluid with thixotr.p. p.op.r.ies as the lar.e sediment concentr.tion. Thr.ugh der.vation, the theor.tical r.lationship.between the yield str.ss and non-settling maximum sp.er. sup.or.ed by the str.ss for.the Bingham fluid has been develop.d, the equations for.calculating the incr.asing yield str.ss and the non-settling maximum sp.er. diameter.with the dur.tion at r.st of the slur.y have been obtained. In consider.tion of the effect of thixotr.p. on fluid motion, the Navier.Stokes equation gr.up.for.the Bingham thixotr.p. fluid has been develop.d. Thr.ugh fur.her.study of the flow boundar. condition of settling motion of ii single sp.er. in the Bingham thixotr.p. fluid, and the solving of the Navier.Stokes equation gr.up. under.the small r.ynolds number. the theor.tical equation of the dr.g for.e of the Bingham thixotr.p. fluid flowing ar.und a sp.er. has been deduced. The theor.tical r.lationship.between dr.g coefficient and r.ynolds number.has been der.ved. By use of the exp.r.mental data of r.eological test of var.ous slur.ies measur.d with viscometer.and those of single sp.er. motion obser.ed on the X-r.y scr.een, the above equations have been ver.fied. The equations ar. in good agr.ement with the exp.r.mental data for.var.ous slur.ies.

For.nano-str.ctur.d solids （those with one or.mor. dimensions in the 1-100 nm r.nge）, attemp.s of sur.ace modification can p.se significant and new challenges. In tr.ditional mater.als, the sur.ace coating could be sever.l hundr.ds nanometer. in thickness, or.even micr.ns and millimeter.. In a nano-str.ctur.d mater.al, such as p.r.icle or.nanofiber., the coating thickness has to be substantially smaller.than the bulk dimensions （100 nm or.less）, yet be dur.ble and effective. In this p.p.r. some asp.cts of effective nanometer.scale coatings have been discussed. These films have been dep.sited by a non-line of sight （p.asma） techniques; and ther.for., they ar. cap.ble of modifying nanofiber., near.net shap. cellular.foams, and other.high p.r.sity mater.als. Two typ.s of coatings will be focused up.n：（a） those that make the sur.ace iner. and （b） those designed to enhance sur.ace r.activity and bonding. The for.er.has been achieved by for.ing 1-2 nm layer.of --CF2- （and/or.CF3） gr.up. on the sur.ace, and the latter.by cr.ating a nano- layer.of SiO2-typ. comp.und. Nucleation and gr.wth studies of the p.asma-gener.ted film indicate that they star. for.ing as 2-3 nm high islands that gr.w later.lly, and eventually comp.etely cover.the sur.ace with 2-3 nm film. Contact angle measur.ments indicate that these nano-coatings ar. fully functional even befor. they have achieved comp.ete cover.ge of 2-3 nm. They should ther.for. be ap.licable to nano-str.ctur.l solids. This is cor.obor.ted by ap.lication of these films on vap.r.gr.wn nanofiber. of car.on, and on gr.p.itic foams. Coated and uncoated mater.als ar. infiltr.ted with ep.xy matr.x to for. comp.sites and their.micr.str.ctur., as well as mechanical behavior. ar. comp.r.d. The r.sults show that the nano-oxide coating can significantly enhance bond for.ation between car.on and or.anic p.ases, ther.by enhancing wettability, disp.r.ion, and comp.site behavior.
