This paper deals with the characterisation and study of physico-chemical stability of ceramic filters from clays and rice husk obtained from the far north region of Cameroon (Logone Valley) and their application in potable water treatment. Clays from Mouka were characterized by FTIR analysis. The results showed that the filter formulated with a mixture containing 80% clay and 20% rice husk of 100 μm in size each gave the lowest filter shrinkage rate;these formulated filters were chosen for the remaining work. Leaching tests showed that with filters at a sintering temperature of 830°C the leaching was not observed under neutral (pH 6.8) and acidic (pH 5) conditions as compared to 950°C and 1000°C where the leaching was observed. In basic (pH 9) condition, all the filters obtained released ions. Leaching tests revealed that the conductivity of the leachate for the filters sintered at 830°C was lower than those sintered at 950°C and 1000°C. Meanwhile, conductivity decreases with increasing sintering temperature (temperature up to 830°C) due to the fact that ceramization starts as from 850°C that leads to an amorphous state that favours chemical stability, the leaching ions were Fe2+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Al3+. The ceramic filters sintered at 950°C were applied to the filtration of water and the performance in terms of turbidity reduction was 95% and the flow rate after 50 minutes was 100 × 10−3 L/h.

Treatment of yellow dye 23 by heterogeneous Fenton-like process was studied using iron rich soil as an iron source. The iron rich soil sample was characterized by XRd, SeM and BeT analysis. XRd pattern indicates that the iron rich soil is made of goethite and hematite. The reaction was systematically investigated under various experimental conditions such as pH, iron rich soil dosage, oxidant and dye concentrations. The result revealed that using iron rich soil as catalyst led to high discoloration efficiency (97.71% for 140 min of treatment) at pH = 2.5, 2 g/L iron rich soil and 16 m·mol/L H2O2. The degradation kinetics of acid yellow 23 can be described by a pseudo-first-order reaction following the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The main roles of hydroxyl radicals in degradation process were investigated by adding of various radical scavengers.

egusi seed shells (eSS) were used as precursor for the preparation of two activated carbons (ACs) following H3PO4 and ZnCl2 activation. The effect of factors controlling the preparation of ACs such as chemical activating agent concentration (2 - 10 M), activation temperature (400°C - 700°C) and residence time (30 - 120 min) were optimized using the Box-Behnken design (BBd). The optimized activated carbons based H3PO4 (ACP) and ZnCl2 (ACZ) were characterized by N2 adsorption, elemental analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Boehm titration and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) techniques. The specific surface area was found to be 1053.91 and 1009.89 m2·g-1 for ACP and ACZ respectively. The adsorbents had similar surface functionalities and were both microporous. The effect of various parameters such as initial pH, concentration, and contact time on the adsorption of nitrate ions on ACP and ACZ in aqueous solution was studied. ACZ demonstrated better adsorption capacity (8.26 mg·g-1) compared to ACP (5.65 mg·g-1) at the same equilibrium time of 20 min. The adsorption process was governed by a “physical interactions” phenomenon for both adsorbents.

This paper deals with the formulation of ceramic filters having the porosity adapted to domestic potable water *** filters were made from clays and rice husk obtained from the Far North region of Cameroon(Logone Valley).Nine formulations were investigated to choose those that might have the porosity standing between 35 and 50%(the ideal porosity adapted for water treatment).The nine formulations investigated were as follows:clay:rice husk mixture weight ratio 0.7:0.3;0.8:0.2 and 0.9:0.1 with the particle size of 100:100 *** sintering temperatures of 900℃,950℃ and 1000℃ were applied for each of the *** results showed that only filters with weight ratio 0.7:0.3 sintered at 900℃,950℃ and 1000℃ had porosity between 35 and 50% with values of 39.41±0.96;40.15±1.59;40.14±1.31 *** strength,permeability and iron leaching behavior were investigated for these three *** formulation 0.7:0.3 with sintering temperature of 1000℃ had the higher permeability and was the more stable for iron leaching so it is the more adapted for water treatment in terms of flow rate and iron leaching behavior,pore size distribution showed that these filters were macroporous and designed for microfiltration with average pore diameter of 0.46μm.
