Study of the Superficial Modification of Sisal Fibres with Lignin, and Its Use As a reinforcement Agent in cementitious composites

The objective of this work was to evaluate different superficial treatments of sisal fibres employing lignin,and their use as a reinforcement agent in cementitious *** treatments consisted of superficially impregnating sisal fibres(S)with organosolv lignin(LO),organosolv lignin and glutaraldehyde(LOG),Kraft lignin(LK)and Kraft lignin and glutaraldehyde(LKG).The fibre modifications were verified by FTIr-ATr and SEM analyzes,and the presence of lignin on the surface of the fibres was evidenced,confirming the effectiveness of the *** mechanical,thermal(by TGA)and water absorption properties of the fibres before and after the modifications were also *** treatment,the modified fibres presented an expressive reduction of the water absorption and did not show significant changes in the mechanical properties when compared with the natural unmodified sisal fibre(SNAT).It was verified an increase in the thermal stability of the treated fibres which can be attributed to the insertion of lignin on the *** evaluate the performance of the fibres in the cementitious composites,cement plates(cP)were produced with different treated fibres(cP-SLOG,cP-SLO,cP-SLKG,cP-SLK)and fibres without treatment(cP-SNAT).The composites were evaluated concerning to the water absorption,porosity and mechanical *** fractured regions were also investigated by *** composites prepared showed similar values of absorption and porosity *** the mechanical properties,the composites prepared with modified fibres showed a significant increase in the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity compared with cP-SNAT,while toughness was similar to all *** the SEM images,it was observed that the modified fibres immersed in the cementitious plates showed no degradation,indicating that the impregnation of lignin acted as a protective agent of the ***,the treatments of the fibres with lignin led to a significant improvement in th

Segmented all-electron basis set of triple zeta valence quality plus polarization functions(TZP)for the elements of the fifth row to be used together with the zero-order regular approximation(ZOrA)is carefully *** correctly describe electrons distant from atomic nuclei,the basis set is augmented with diffuse functions giving rise to a set designated as *** the ZOrA-B3LYP theoretical level,these sets are used to calculate the ionization energy and mean dipole polarizability of some atoms,bond length,dissociation energy,and harmonic vibrational frequency of diatomic ***,these results are compared with the theoretical and experimental data found in the *** considering that our sets are relatively compact,they are sufficiently accurate and reliable to perform property calculations involving simultaneously electrons from the inner shell and outer *** performances of the ZOrA and second-order Douglas-Kroll-Hess Hamiltonians are evaluated and the results are also discussed.

Bioaccumulation and depuration of chromium in the selected organs and whole body tissues of freshwater fish cirrhinus mrigala individually and in binary solutions with nickel

contamination of aquatic ecosystems with heavy metals has been receiving increased worldwide attention due to their harmful effects on human health and other organisms in the environment. Most of the studies dealing with toxic effects of metals deal with single metal species, while the aquatic organisms are typically exposed to mixtures of metals. Hence, in order to provide data supporting the usefulness of freshwater fish as indicators of heavy metal pollution, it has been proposed in the present study to investigate the bioaccumulation and depuration of chromium in the selected organs of freshwater fingerlings cirrhinus mrigala, individually and in binary solutions with nickel. The results show that the kidney is a target organ for chromium accumulation, which implies that it is also the ＂critical＂ organ for toxic symptoms. The results further show that accumulation of nickel in all the tissues of c. mrigala is higher than that of chromium. In addition, the metal accumulations of the binary mixtures of chromium and nickel are substantially higher than those of the individual metals, indicating synergistic interactions between the two metals. Theoretically the simplest explanation for an additive joint action of toxicants in a mixture is that they act in a qualitatively similar way. The observed data suggest that c. mrigala could be suitable monitoring organisms to study the bioavailability of water-bound metals in freshwater habitats.

Transrectal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging measurement of extramural tumor spread in rectal cancer

AIM： To evaluate the agreement between transrectal ultrasound （TrUS） and magnetic resonance imaging （MrI） in classification of ≥ T3 rectal tumors. METHODS： From January 2010 to January 2012, 86 consecutive patients with ≥ T3 tumors were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 66.4 years （range： 26-91 years）. The tumors were all ≥ T3 on TrUS. The sub-classification was defined by the penetration of the rectal wall： a： 0 to 1 mm; b： 1-5 mm, c： 6-15; d：〉 15 mm. Early tumors as ab （≤ 5 ram） and advanced tumors as cd （〉 5 mm）. All patients underwent TrUS using a 6.5 MHz transrectal transducer. The MrI was performed with a 1.5 T Phil- ips unit. The TrUS findings were blinded to the radiol- ogist performing the interpretation of the MrI images and measuring the depth of extramural tumor spread rESULTS： TrUS found 51 patients to have an early ≥ T3 tumors and 35 to have an advanced tumor, where- as MrI categorized 48 as early ≥ T3 tumors and 38 as advanced tumors. No patients with tumors classified as advanced by TrUS were found to be early on MrI. The kappa value in classifying early versus advanced T3 rectal tumors was 0.93 （95% cI： 0.85-1.00）. We found a kappa value of 0.74 （95% cI： 0.63-0.86） for the total sub-classification between the two methods. The mean maximal tumor outgrowth measured by TrUS, 5.5 mm ± 5.63 mm and on MrI, 6.3 mm ±6.18 mm, P = 0.004. In 19 of the 86 patients the following cT scan or surgery revealed distant metastases; of the 51 patients in the ultrasound ab group three （5.9%） had metastases, whereas 16 （45.7%） of 35 in the cd group harbored distant metastases, P = 0.00002. The odds ratio of having distant metastases in the ultra- sound cd group compared to the ab group was 13.5 （95% cI： 3.5-51.6）, P = 0.00002. The mean maximal ultrasound measured outgrowth was 4.3 mm （95% cI： 3.2-5.5 mm） in patients without distant metastases, while the mean maximal outgrowth was 9.5 mm （95% cI： 6.2-12.8 ram） in the patients with metastases, P = 0

Home Energy Management Systems(HEMS)are increasingly relevant for demand-side management at the residential level by collecting data(energy,weather,electricity prices)and controlling home appliances or storage *** control can be performed with classical models that find optimal solutions,with high real-time computational cost,or data-driven approaches,like reinforcement Learning,that find good and flexible solutions,but depend on the availability of load and generation data and demand high computational resources for *** this work,a novel HEMS is proposed for the optimization of an electric battery operation in a real,online and data-driven environment that integrates state-of-the-art load forecasting combining cNN and LSTM neural networks to increase the robustness of *** reinforcement Learning agents are trained with different algorithms(Double DQN,Dueling DQN,rainbow and Proximal Policy Optimization)in order to minimize the cost of electricity purchase and to maximize photovoltaic self-consumption for a PV-Battery residential *** show that the best reinforcement Learning agent achieves a 35%reduction in total cost when compared with an optimization-based agent.

BAcKGrOUND Hepatitis c virus(HcV)infection is responsible for a chronic liver inflammation,which may cause end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular *** E(protein:ApoE,gene:APOE),a key player in cholesterol metabolism,is mainly synthesized in the liver and APOE polymorphisms may influence HcV-induced liver *** To determine whether APOE alleles affect outcomes in HcV-infected patients with liver cirrhosis following orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT).METHODS This was a cohort study in which 179 patients,both genders and aged 34-70 years,were included before or after(up to 10 years follow-up)*** injury severity was assessed using different criteria,including METAVIr and models for endstage liver *** polymorphisms were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain *** The APOE3 allele was the most common(67.3%).In inflammation severity of biopsies from 89 OLT explants and 2 patients in pre-transplant,the degree of severe inflammation(A3F4,0.0%)was significantly less frequent than in patients with minimal and moderate degree of inflammation(≤A2F4,16.2%)P=0.048,in patients carrying the APOE4 allele when compared to *** addition,a significant difference was also found(≤A2F4,64.4%vs A3F4,0.0%;P=0.043)and(A1F4,57.4%vs A3F4,0.0%;P=0.024)in APOE4 patients when compared to APOE3 *** fibrosis degree of the liver graft in 8 of 91 patients and the lack of the E4 allele was associated with more moderate fibrosis(F2)(P=0.006).cONcLUSION Our results suggest that the E4 allele protects against progression of liver fibrosis and degree of inflammation in HcV-infected patients.

A factorial experimental design was combined with response surface methodology(rSM) to opti-mize the catalyzed cO2 consumption by coke deposition and syngas production during the dry re-forming of cH4. The cH4 /cO2 feed ratio and the reaction temperature were chosen as the variables, and the selected responses were cH4 and cO2 conversion, the H2 /cO ratio, and coke deposition. The optimal reaction conditions were found to be a cH4 /cO2 feed ratio of approximately 3 at 700 °c, producing a large quantity of coke and realizing high cO2 conversion. Furthermore, raman results showed that the cH4 /cO2 ratio and reaction temperature affect the system's response, particularly the characteristics of the coke produced, which indicates the formation of carbon nanotubes and amorphous carbon.

Imaging probes for non-invasive tumoral detection and functional monitoring of cancer multidrug resistance

Focal liver lesions:Practical magnetic resonance imaging approach

With the widespread of cross-sectional imaging, a growth of incidentally detected focal liver lesions(FLL) has been observed. A reliable detection and characterization of FLL is critical for optimal patient management. Maximizing accuracy of imaging in the context of FLL is paramount in avoiding unnecessary biopsies, which may result in post-procedural complications. A tremendous development of new imaging techniques has taken place during these last years. Nowadays, Magnetic resonance imaging(MrI) plays a key role in management of liver lesions, using a radiation-free technique and a safe contrast agent profile. MrI plays a key role in the non-invasive correct characterization of FLL. MrI is capable of providing comprehensive and highly accurate diagnostic information, with the additional advantage of lack of harmful ionizing radiation. These properties make MrI the mainstay for the noninvasive evaluation of focal liver lesions. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art MrI liver protocol, briefly discussing different sequence types, the unique characteristics of imaging non-cooperative patients and discuss the role of hepatocyte-specific contrast agents. A review of the imaging features of the most common benign and malignant FLL is presented, supplemented by a schematic representation of a simplistic practical approach on MrI.
