Fishmeal is the most preferred source of protein in aquafeeds, but it is expensive and scarce. Hence, Achatina fulica meat meal (AFM), which is much less preferred for human consumption out of three species of African giant land snails, was tested as a fishmeal substitute for Clarias gariepinus growth. Five iso-nitrogenous and iso-calorific diets were formulated, in which AFM substituted fish meal at 0% (control or Diet A), 25% (Diet b), 50% (Diet C), 75% (Diet D) and 100% (Diet E). These dietary treatments were each replicated thrice in a completely randomized design experiment, using 36-L plastic tanks in which the fish were fed daily rations corresponding to 5% of their body weight, for 8 weeks. Water quality parameters in the tanks were monitored. Proximate analyses were conducted on the fish meal, snail meal and experimental diets before the feeding trials. Cost-benefit analysis of the different diets was performed. The crude protein content of AFM (69.18%) was significantly higher than that of fish meal (55.81%). There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the mean weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and survival rate in fish fed Diet A and Diet b. The best protein efficiency ratio (0.77) was recorded in fish fed Diet b. Furthermore, the survival rate of fish increased with increased levels of AFM substitution. Water quality parameters were within a suitable range for tropical fish culture, indicating that the AFM did not pollute the water. The fish fed 25% AFM diet significantly (P Clarias gariepinus diets at a 25% substitution level. The aquaculture industry can thus exploit the availability of this feed resource.

Fatliquor is an oil-in-water emulsion that improves the physical properties of leather such as tensile strength,flexibility,and softness by lubricating the leather *** Sesamum indicum oil was synthesized,characterized,and examined for consideration as a substitute for imported fatliquor in *** sulfonation of the oil was confirmed by the significant observations made in the FTIR,1 H NMR,13 C NMR,and 13 C NMR DEPT analysis results.A remarkable difference was observed in the physicochemical properties results of both unsulfonated and sulfonated *** sulfonated sesame fatliquor was applied onto goatskin and compared with a commercial sulfated fatliquor in the processing of shoe upper leather using standard *** average results for tensile strength,double edge tear,elongation,and softness results for the commercial and synthesized fatliquors are as follows:14.27 N/mm^(2);13.77 N/mm^(2),50.61N;60.11 N,38.06%;54.28%,25.2;25.0.A comparable level of lubrication of the leather treated with the sulfonated Sesamum indicum oil and that treated with the commercial leather fatliquor was revealed by the Sudan IV stain test as well as scanning electron microscopy analysis *** analyses,therefore,show that the as-synthesized sulfonated Sesamum indicum oil could be considered as a substitute for imported fatliquor in the leather industry.

This work covers the material used for improvement, improvement considerations, design and fabrication of the worktable and incorporation of the guide system. The importance of a metal cutting operation to the engineering production process cannot be overemphasized. For optimization of materials used, the cut must always be to precision in as much as the waste in material is seriously avoided despite achieving specific geometry expected. To ensure efficient mobility, the improvement incorporates an assembly that can be easily disassembled for mobility. However, the improved handshearing machine was tested to determine its performance on the galvanized steel sheets, aluminum and stainless steel of thickness ranging from 0.5 mm-4.00 mm. It was observed that the machine cut these materials effectively and efficiently compared with the one without work table and guide system. The developed machine has three major parts: the shearing body, the handle and the frame. The machine was produced at the cost of $438 only (cost of production).

Water resource contamination is still a major concern in several regions of developing countries espe-cially in sub-Saharan countries in which polluted waters pose serious risks to human health and the *** seasonal variation of the physicochemical parameters including pH,temperature(T),electrical conductivity(EC),dissolved oxygen(O_(2)),dissolved organic carbon(DOC),total organic carbon(TOC),and trace metals were assessed in water samples collected from wells(n=3)and two rivers which were the River Lukemi(RLK,n=3)and River Luini(RLN,n=2)located in the City of Kikwit(Province of Kwilu,Democratic Republic of the Congo).Samples were collected during the dry and wet *** concentration of trace metals(Cr,Mn,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn,As,Mo,Ag,Cd,Sn,Sb,and Pb)in water was measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry(ICP-MS),and soluble ions(Na^(+),K^(+),NH_(4)^(+),SO_(4)^(-),NO_(3),and Cl^(-))analysis was performed using lon *** results indicate the seasonal difference in the physicochemical composition of water e.g.,the pH was lower in the wet compared to the dry *** values during the wet season ranged from 4.12 to 5.60 in wells and from 5.55 to 6.31 in rivers while the dry season values ranged from 6.27 to 6.98 in wells and from 7.09 to 7.44 in *** concentrations of soluble ions and other physicochemical par ameters(O_(2),DOC and TOC)also varied with the seasons,being higher in the wet and lower in the dry *** the exception of Mn,the average concentrations of other trace metals measured in water samples from wells and rivers met the World Health Organization(WHO)guidelines for drinki ng/domestic water *** concentration in water samples analysed ranged between 634 to 812 and 1352-1741μgL^(-1) during the dry and wet seasons,*** results imply that the high concentration of Mn in the water samples may be explained by the geological origin and result of natural weathering *** general,accord

Soil degradation is a growing problem worldwide because it reduces the fertile top layer of the soil available for food production and one such degradative action is soil erosion due to the harvesting of *** loss due to crop harvesting with particular reference to yam tubers has not been quantified globally despite the fact that yam is a major staple food consumed worldwide and it is prevalent in many parts of *** yams in our environment is usually done with the soil attached to the yams due to the fact that farmers do not want additional work of removing soil attached to the *** study investigates the soil physical properties that influence soil loss due to yam harvesting in Abeokuta,South-Western Nigeria and to assess the quantity of soil loss due to yam *** on representative sampling area per location,yam tubers were harvested manually within the entire yam farmland from October to December *** weight,net weight and the amount of soil adhering to the yams were *** of soil physical properties such as soil moisture content,heap bulk density,inter-heap bulk density and soil texture were investigated with respect to soil *** results showed that moisture content ranged from 4%to 15%,heap bulk density ranged from 0.93 to 1.29 g cm^(-3) and inter-heap bulk density ranged from 1.03 to 1.50 g cm^(-3).They all had a positive correlation with soil *** particle size analysis for Federal University of Agricultural,Abeokuta(FUNAAb)and Alabata revealed that sand content was(86.78%and 88.32%),clay content(10.69%and 7.6%)and silt content,(2.53%and 4.08%)*** also revealed that clay content of the soil positively influenced the total soil loss during the yam *** mean soil losses in Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta(FUNAAb)and Alabata village yam farms were 4303 and 2125 kg/ha/harvest *** study also revealed that soil moisture content at harvesting time and clay

background: The need to identify and characterize new antimicrobial agents is important due to the increasing development of resistance by microorganisms to the existing antimicrobial agents. Aim: This study examined the efficacies of Mangifera indica on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Method: Three parts (leaf [L], root [R], and bark [b]) of the plant were analyzed. The extraction of the samples was performed by aseptically grinding the samples, dissolving in absolute ethanol, and filtering through whatman filter paper. The efficacy of the extracts bothsingle and combined was determined using agar well diffusion assay with gentamycin [10 μl] (E. coli) and vancomycin [30 μl] (S. aureus) as control antibiotics. Results: The higher concentration (Cb>2b> = 3.0 g/ml) showed more antibacterial effectiveness than the lower concentration (Cb>1b> = 1.5 g/ml) against both bacterial isolates with significant differences (P E. coli dry leaf extract;fresh bark extract), double extracts (S. aureus: dry and fresh leaf extracts) and triple extract (E. coli and S. aureus dry extracts). For the single extracts the bacteria has the following significant results: E. coli L (dry 6.3 ± 2.5 mm, fresh 14.7 ± 0.6 mm, P = 0.0050), R (dry 11.3 ± 1.5 mm, fresh 7.3 ± 1.5 mm, P = 0.0327);for S. aureus L (dry 7.0 ± 1.7 mm, fresh 11.0 ± 1.0 mm, P = 0.0257), R (dry 7.0 ± 2.0 mm, fresh 11.7 ± 1.5 mm, P = 0.0325), and b (dry 5.0 ± 1.0 mm, fresh 16.0 ± 1.0 mm, P = 0.0002). b>Background:b> Medicinal plants have been in use since the origin of man. Many important chemical substances with biological functions that could be used for treatment and prevention of attack from bacteria, fungi, herbivorous mammals and insects are produced by different plants. Such compounds with useful properties have been recorded in their numbers, about 12,000 accounting for about 10% of total plant species. Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the antimicrobial efficacies of herbal extracts on some clinical pathogens. Methods: The antimicrobial activities of pressed juices of Allium sativum (garlic), Bryophyllum pinnatum and Garcinia kola neats and their dilutions were tested on pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans to determine their susceptibility to the juices and their combinations. Agar well diffusion method was employed on Muller-Hinton agar to determine their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. The phytochemical analysis of the plants’ juices were also determined. b>Results:b> At 100% (neat) the juices of G. kola, b. pinnatum and Garcinia kola showed substantial zones of inhibition against the pathogens with a zone diameter of about 22.0 mm and above. At 75% concentrations, the juices inhibited the pathogens tested against them. A. sativum (garlic) inhibited K. pneumonia, P. mirabilis, and S. aureus even at 50% concentration. C. albicans isolates were 60% susceptible to G. kola juice, 40% at 100% concentration. At 75% concentration of the juice, C. albicans isolates were also 60% susceptible
