Introduction. -The BREV battery (Battery f.r rapid evaluation of.cognitive f. nctions) is a tool which can be used f.r the rapid neuropsychological evaluation of.children aged between 4 and 9 years. Objectives. -Af.er standardization (70 0 unaf.ected children) and validation by comparison with a ref.rence battery (20 2 children with epilepsy), the aim of.this study was f.rther validation in 173 children with learning disorders. Population and methods. -The study protocol in cluded administration of.the BREV, precise neuropsychological examination and ev aluation of.oral and written language. Statistical analysis was used to compare the f.ndings of.the BREV with those of.the ref.rence method, and the recommendat ions indicated by the BREV with the f.nal diagnoses, and to def.ne the sensitivi ty and the specif.city of.the BREV battery. Results. -All the correlations betw een BREV tests and ref.rence tests were signif.cant. Recommendations af.er the B REV were in agreement with the conclusions of.the ref.rence evaluation in 168/17 2 children f.r language, 145/173 f.r the psychometric evaluation. f.r only 4 chi dren, the results of.the BREV were f.lse negative. Diagnoses corresponded in 168 /173 children f.r oral language, in 102/110 f.r written language, 166/173 f.r pr axis disorders and 157/173 f.r intellectual def.cit. The most predictive subtest s of.the BREV and sensitivity and specif.city of.verbal and nonverbal scores wer e calculated. Conclusion. -The BREV is a reliable examination, in learning diso rders, to determine the most complementary investigations both in terms of.langu age disorders and f.r non-verbal or global learning disabilities.

Mitochondrial control of.hematopoietic stem cell balance and hematopoiesis

Hematopoietic stem cells （HSCs） are stem cells f.om mesodermal derivation that reside in bone marrow and provide blood cells f.r the whole lif. of.an adult individual, through a process called hematopoiesis. The long lasting support of.HSCs f.r hematopoiesis is permitted by the f.ne regulation of.quiescence and division output. Exit f.om the quiescent state is to produce a committed and/or stem daughter cells, in an event def.ned asymmetric or symmetric division. A deregulation in the proportion between asymmetric and symmetric divisions is critical in the appearance of.hematological disorders ranging f.om bone marrow f.ilure to hematological malignancies. Over the past years, several studies have indicated how the metabolism of.HSCs is determinant in the regulation of.HSC quiescence and commitment process. A metabolism shif.ed to the glycolytic pathway promotes HSCs quiescence and sustainment of.hematopoiesis. Boosting mitochondrial respiration promotes the stem cell commitment f.llowed by stem pool exhaustion, and minimal mitochondrial activity is required to maintain the HSCs quiescence. In the present review are discussed the most recent advances in comprehension of.the roles of.mitochondria in the hematopoiesis and in the division balance.

This study was designed to determine the ability of.computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis （CASA-Morph） with f.uorescence to discriminate between spermatozoa carrying dif.erent sex chromosomes f.om the nuclear morphometrics generated and dif.erent statistical procedures in the bovine species. The study was divided into two experiments. The f.rst was to study the morphometric dif.erences between X- and Y-chromosome-bearing spermatozoa （SX and SY, respectively）. Spermatozoa f.om eight bulls were processed to assess simultaneously the sex chromosome by f.SH and sperm morphometry by f.uorescence-based CASA-Morph. SX cells were larger than SY cells on average （P 〈 0.001） although with important dif.erences between bulls. A simultaneous evaluation of.all the measured f.atures by discriminant analysis revealed that nuclear area and average f.uorescence intensity were the variables selected by stepwise discriminant f.nction analysis as the best discriminators between SX and SY. In the second experiment, the sperm nuclear morphometric results f.om CASA-Morph in nonsexed （mixed SX and SY） and sexed （SX） semen samples f.om f.ur bulls were compared. f.SH allowed a successf.l classif.cation of.spermatozoa according to their sex chromosome content. X-sexed spermatozoa displayed a larger size and f.uorescence intensity than nonsexed spermatozoa （P 〈 0.05）. We conclude that the CASA-Morph f.uorescence-based method has the potential to f.nd dif.erences between X- and Y-chromosome-bearing spermatozoa in bovine species although more studies are needed to increase the precision of.sex determination by this technique.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder and complex mechanisms are involved in the physiopathology of.Alzheimer’s ***,there is data suggesting that inf.ammation plays a role in its development and ***,some non-steroidal antiinf.ammatory drugs,such as meloxicam,which act by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 have been used as neuroprotective agents in dif.erent neurodegenerative disease *** purpose of.this study was to investigate the ef.ects of.co-nanoencapsulated curcumin and meloxicam in lipid core nanocapsules(LCN)on cognitive impairment induced by amyloid-beta peptide injection in *** were prepared by the nanoprecipitation *** Swiss mice received a single intracerebroventricular injection of.amyloid-beta peptide aggregates(f.agment 25–35,3 nmol/3μL)or vehicle and were subsequently treated with curcumin-loaded LCN(10 mg/kg)or meloxicam-loaded LCN(5 mg/kg)or meloxicam+curcumin-co-loaded LCN(5 and 10 mg/kg,respectively).Treatments were given on alternate days f.r 12 days(i.e.,six doses,once every 48 hours,by intragastric gavage).Our data showed that amyloid-beta peptide inf.sion caused long-term memory def.cits in the inhibitory avoidance and object recognition tests in *** the inhibitory avoidance test,both meloxicam and curcumin f.rmulations(oil or co-loaded LCN)improved amyloid-beta-induced memory impairment in ***,only meloxicam and curcumin-co-loaded LCN attenuated non-aversive memory impairment in the object recognition ***,the benef.cial ef.ects of.meloxicam and curcuminco-loaded LCN could be explained by the anti-inf.ammatory properties of.these drugs through cortical cyclooxygenase-2 *** study suggests that the neuroprotective potential of.meloxicam and curcumin co-nanoencapsulation is associated with cortical cyclooxygenase-2 *** study was approved by the Committee on Care and Use of.Experimental Animal Resources,the f.deral University of.Pampa,Brazil(app
