Chronic hypotony management using endoscopy-assisted vitrectomy after severe ocular trauma or vitrectomy

·AIM: To report outcomes of endoscopy-assisted vitrectomy(EAV) in patients with chronic hypotony following severe ocular trauma or vitrectomy.·METHODS: This was a retrospective, noncomparative case series. Ciliary bodies were evaluated using ultrasound biomicroscopy pre-operatively and direct visualisation intraoperatively. All selected individuals(seven patients/seven eyes) underwent EAV. Removal of ciliary membrane and traction, gas/silicone oil tamponade(GT/SOT), and scleral buckling(SB) were performed in selected eyes. Outcome measurements mainly included intraocular pressure(IOP) and best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA).·RESULTS: Seven eyes from 7 male aphakic patients with a mean age of 45(range, 20-68)y were included in this study;the average follow-up time was 12(9-15)mo. GT was performed in 2 eyes;membrane peeling(MP) and SOT in 2 eyes;and MP, SOT, and SB in 3 eyes. The mean preand post-operative IOP were 4.5(range, 4.0±0.11 to 4.8±0.2) mm Hg and 9.9(range, 5.6±0.17 to 12.1±0.2) mm Hg at 52wk(12mo), respectively. BCVA improved in six eyes;one eye still showed light perception, and no bulbi phthisis was observed.·CONCLUSION: Endoscopy offers improved judgment and recognition and has an improved prognosis for chronic hypotony. Therefore, endoscopy can be an effective and promising operative technique for chronic traumatic hypotony management.

Synthesis of ultralong Si_3N_4 nanowires by a simple thermal evaporation method

Largescale vaporsolid synthesis of ultralong silicon nitride （Si3N4） nanowires was achieved by using simple thermal evaporation of mixture powders of active carbon and monoxide silicon. The products were charac terized by Xray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energydispersive Xray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results suggest that the silicon nitride nanowires have a smooth surface, with lengths of up to several hundreds of microns and diameters of 100300 nm. A detailed study of both the chemical and structural composition was performed. Such ultralong sil icon nitride nanowires demonstrate potential applications as materials for constructing nanoscale devices and as reinforcement in advanced composites.

Functional groups to modify g-C3N4 for improved photocatalytic activity of hydrogen evolution from water splitting

Rational modification by functional groups was regarded as one of efficient methods to improve the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride(g-C3 N4).Herein,g-C3 N4 with yellow(Y-GCN)and brown(C-GCN)were prepared by using the fresh urea and the urea kept for five years,respectively,for the first *** results show that the H2 production rate of the C-GCN is 39.06μmol/h,which is about 5 times of the ***,in terms of apparent quantum efficiency(AQ.E)at 420 nm,C-GCN has a value of 6.3%and nearly 7.3 times higher than that of Y-GCN(0.86%).The results of XRD,IR,DRS,and NMR show,different from Y-GCN,a new kind of functional group of—N=CH—was firstly in-situ introduced into the C-GCN,resulting in good visible light absorption,and then markedly improving the photocatalytic *** calculation also confirms the effect of the—N=CH—group band structure of ***,XPS results demonstrate that the existence of—N=CH—groups in C-GCN results in tight interaction between C-GCN and Pt nanoparticles,and then improves the charge separation and photocatalytic *** present work demonstrates a good example of"defect engineering"to modify the intrinsic molecular structure of g-C3N4 and provides a new avenue to enhance the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 via facile and environmental-friendly method.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))at low concentrations to ammonia(NH_(4)^(+))still faces chal lenges of low NO_(3)^(-)conversion and NH_(4)^(+)selectivity due to the sluggish mass transfer and insufficien atomic hydrogen(H^(*))***,we propose CuO/NiO heterojunction with the assistance of a built-in electric field to enhance mass transfer and H^(*)*** built-in electric field in Cu O/Ni O is success fully formed as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spec *** results reveal that Cu O/Ni O achieves high NO_(3)^(-)reduction activity(100%)and NH_(4)^(+)selec tivity(100%)under low NO_(3)^(-)concentration conditions(100 mg/L NO_(3)^(-),ca.22.6 mg/L NO_(3)^(-)-N),which i superior to that of many recently reported *** functional theory calculations furthe clarify that the built-in electric field triggers the enhanced adsorption of reactants on CuO/NiO hetero junction interface and strong d-p orbital hybridization between reactants and CuO/***,the free energy diagram of hydrogen evolution reaction of CuO/NiO confirms the realization of enhanced H^(*)pro ***,coupling experiments and consecutive cycle tests demonstrate the potential of CuO/NiO in practical *** work may open up a new path and guide the development of efficien electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic reduction of NO_(3)^(-)at low concentrations to NH_(4)^(+).
