Photosynthetic response dynamics in the invasive species Tithonia diversifolia and two co-occurring native shrub species under fluctuating light conditions

To determine the invasiveness of invasive plants,many studies have compared photosynthetic traits or strategies between invasive and native species.However,few studies have compared the photosynthetic dynamics between invasive and native species during light fluctuations.We compared photosynthetic induction,relaxation dynamics and leaf traits between the invasive species,Tithonia diversifolia and two native species,Clerodendrum bungei and Blumea balsamifera,in full-sun and shady habitats.The photosynthetic dynamics and leaf traits differed among species.T.diversifolia showed a slower induction speed and stomatal opening response but had higher average intrinsic water-use efficiency than the two native species in full-sun habitats.Thus,the slow induction response may be attributed to the longer stomatal length in T.diversifolia.Habitat had a significant effect on photosynthetic dynamics in T.diversifolia and B.balsamifera but not in C.bungei.In shady habitat,T.diversifolia had a faster photosynthetic induction response than in full-sun habitat,leading to a higher average stomatal conductance during photosynthetic induction in T.diversifolia than in the two native species.In contrast,B.balsamifera had a larger stomatal length and slower photosynthetic induction and relaxation response in shady habitat than in full-sun habitat,resulting in higher carbon gain during photosynthetic relaxation.Nevertheless,in both habitats,T.diversifolia had an overall higher carbon gain during light fluctuations than the two native species.Our results indicated that T.diversifolia can adopt more effective response strategies under fluctuating light environments to maximize carbon gain,which may contribute to its successful invasion.

Estimation of Physiologic Ability and Surgical Stress scoring system for predicting complications following abdominal surgery: A metaanalysis spanning 2004 to 2022

BACKGROUND Postoperative complications remain a paramount concern for surgeons and healthcare practitioners.AIM To present a comprehensive analysis of the Estimation of Physiologic Ability and Surgical Stress(E-PASS)scoring system’s efficacy in predicting postoperative complications following abdominal surgery.METHODS A systematic search of published studies was conducted,yielding 17 studies with pertinent data.Parameters such as preoperative risk score(PRS),surgical stress score(SSS),comprehensive risk score(CRS),postoperative complications,post-operative mortality,and other clinical data were collected for meta-analysis.Forest plots were employed for continuous and binary variables,withχ2 tests assessing heterogeneity(P value).RESULTS Patients experiencing complications after abdominal surgery exhibited significantly higher E-PASS scores compared to those without complications[mean difference and 95%confidence interval(CI)of PRS:0.10(0.05-0.15);SSS:0.04(0.001-0.08);CRS:0.19(0.07-0.31)].Following the exclusion of low-quality studies,results remained valid with no discernible heterogeneity.Subgroup analysis indicated that variations in sample size and age may contribute to hetero-geneity in CRS analysis.Binary variable meta-analysis demonstrated a correlation between high CRS and increased postoperative complication rates[odds ratio(OR)(95%CI):3.01(1.83-4.95)],with a significant association observed between high CRS and postoperative mortality[OR(95%CI):15.49(3.75-64.01)].CONCLUSION In summary,postoperative complications in abdominal surgery,as assessed by the E-PASS scoring system,are consistently linked to elevated PRS,SSS,and CRS scores.High CRS scores emerge as risk factors for heightened morbidity and mortality.This study establishes the accuracy of the E-PASS scoring system in predicting postoperative morbidity and mortality in abdominal surgery,underscoring its potential for widespread adoption in effective risk assessment.

Zero-dimensional graphene quantum dots(GQDs)exhibit many different properties,such as strong fluorescence,nonzero bandgap and solubility in solvents,compared to two-dimensional graphene.GQDs are biocompatible and have low toxicity;hence,they are widely used in the biomedical field.The edge effect of GQDs is of particular interest because edge modification can regulate the performance of nanomaterials.In this review,various preparation methods for GQDs,which can be divided into three main categories,namely top-down,bottom-up and chemical methods,are discussed.The unique optical,electrical,thermal and magnetic properties of GQDs are reviewed.The functionalization of GQDs by doping with heteroatoms and forming composites with other materials is studied,and the characteristics of these GQDs are also discussed.The applications of these GQDs in the fields of optics,electricity,optoelectronics,biomedicine,energy,agriculture and other emerging interdisciplinary fields are reviewed to highlight the enormous potential of nanomaterials.This review reports on the recent advancement in GQD research and suggests future directions for the development of GQDs.

Noninvasive Diagnostic Technique for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Based on Features of Tongue Images

Objective:To investigate a new noninvasive diagnostic model for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) based on features of tongue images.Methods:Healthy controls and volunteers confirmed to have NAFLD by liver ultrasound were recruited from China-Japan Friendship Hospital between September 2018 and May 2019,then the anthropometric indexes and sampled tongue images were measured.The tongue images were labeled by features,based on a brief protocol,without knowing any other clinical data,after a series of corrections and data cleaning.The algorithm was trained on images using labels and several anthropometric indexes for inputs,utilizing machine learning technology.Finally,a logistic regression algorithm and a decision tree model were constructed as 2 diagnostic models for NAFLD.Results:A total of 720 subjects were enrolled in this study,including 432 patients with NAFLD and 288 healthy volunteers.Of them,482 were randomly allocated into the training set and 238 into the validation set.The diagnostic model based on logistic regression exhibited excellent performance:in validation set,it achieved an accuracy of 86.98%,sensitivity of 91.43%,and specificity of 80.61%;with an area under the curve(AUC) of 0.93 [95% confidence interval(CI) 0.68–0.98].The decision tree model achieved an accuracy of 81.09%,sensitivity of 91.43%,and specificity of 66.33%;with an AUC of 0.89(95% CI 0.66–0.92) in validation set.Conclusions:The features of tongue images were associated with NAFLD.Both the 2 diagnostic models,which would be convenient,noninvasive,lightweight,rapid,and inexpensive technical references for early screening,can accurately distinguish NAFLD and are worth further study.

Anti-corrosive and highly reversible zinc metal anode enabled by the phenolic resin coating

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted much attention due to their high theoretical capacity,low cost high safety,and eco-friendly.However,challenges such as dendrite growth and side reactions severely hinder the electrochemical performance of the Zn anode,leading to low Coulombic efficiency （CE） or even short circuits Herein,phenolic resin （PF） is used as a protective coating on the surface of the zinc metal electrode.The PF layer can greatly improve the corrosion resistance of the Zn electrode in the electrolyte.Importantly,this artificial electrode/electrolyte interphase also elevates the nucleation barrier and restrains Zn2+2D diffusion,regulating the zinc deposition/dissolution behavior.As a result,PF@Zn symmetric cells exhibit superior performance than that of bare Zn symmetric cells,achieving a stable and dendrite-free cycle of 1400 h.Furthermore,the carbon nanotube MnO2||PF@Zn （CNT/MnO2||PF@Zn） full cell also delivers a long cycle life with a high-capacity retention of about 180.0 m Ah·g-1after 1400 cycles,far exceeding that of bare Zn anode.This work provides a facile strategy for achieving a dendrite-free and rechargeable zinc anode.

BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a global popular malignant tumor,which is difficult to cure,and the current treatment is limited.AIM To analyze the impacts of stress granule(SG)genes on overall survival(OS),survival time,and prognosis in HCC.METHODS The combined The Cancer Genome Atlas-Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma(TCGA-LIHC),GSE25097,and GSE36376 datasets were utilized to obtain genetic and clinical information.Optimal hub gene numbers and corresponding coefficients were determined using the Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model approach,and genes for constructing risk scores and corresponding correlation coefficients were calculated according to multivariate Cox regression,respectively.The prognostic model’s receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve was produced and plotted utilizing the time ROC software package.Nomogram models were constructed to predict the outcomes at 1,3,and 5-year OS prognostications with good prediction accuracy.RESULTS We identified seven SG genes(DDX1,DKC1,BICC1,HNRNPUL1,CNOT6,DYRK3,CCDC124)having a prognostic significance and developed a risk score model.The findings of Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that the group with a high risk exhibited significantly reduced OS in comparison with those of the low-risk group(P<0.001).The nomogram model’s findings indicate a significant enhancement in the accuracy of OS prediction for individuals with HCC in the TCGA-HCC cohort.Gene Ontology and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis suggested that these SGs might be involved in the cell cycle,RNA editing,and other biological processes.CONCLUSION Based on the impact of SG genes on HCC prognosis,in the future,it will be used as a biomarker as well as a unique therapeutic target for the identification and treatment of HCC.

The lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)have been widely equipped in electric/hybrid electric vehicles(EVs/HEVs)and the portable electronics due to their excellent electrochemical performances.However,a large number of retired LIBs that consist of toxic substances(e.g.,heavy metals,electrolytes)and valuable metals(e.g.,Li,Co)will inevitably flow into the waste stream,and their incineration or landfill treatment will cause severe risks to ecosystem and human beings.The sustainable and efficient treatment or recycling of valuable resources from spent LIBs should be fully recognized for environmental and resource security.As one of the most important processes for spent LIBs recycling,the pretreatment is an indispensable step,which is directly related to the subsequent metal extraction and separation processes.Although considerable progresses have been made regarding the pretreatment technologies,there are few summarized reports concerning critical processes of spent LIBs recycling,especially combination of currently available recycling technologies with industrialized applications during pretreatments.Therefore,comprehensive review of the current prevailing pretreatment technologies in laboratory to existing scale-up applications is quite necessary to reveal cutting-edge development in the field of pretreatment.In this review,the current pretreatment technologies are systematically categorized and introduced,along with critical discussions.This review focused on the various options for pretreatment processes itself,instead of general spent LIBs recycling technologies without the focused topics that have been sophisticatedly reviewed by previous studies.Here,the deactivation,discharge,dismantling,separation,liberation of active material and electrolyte treatment have been summarized with the in-depth discussion of the technology development and current status of each category.Finally,current states of industrial development are also reviewed and discussed for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly recyclin

Simultaneous Bulk-and Surface-initiated Living Polymerization Studied with a Heterogeneous Stochastic Reaction Model

To better characterize the properties of surface-initiated polymers, simultaneous bulk-and surface-initiated polymerizations are usually carried out by assuming that the properties of the surface-initiated polymers resemble those of the bulk-initiated polymers. Through a Monte Carlo simulation using a heterogeneous stochastic reaction model, it was discovered that the bulk-initiated polymers exhibit a higher molecular weight and a lower dispersity than the corresponding surface-initiated polymers, which indicates that the equivalent assumption is invalid. Furthermore, the molecular weight distributions of the two types of polymers are also different, suggesting different polymerization mechanisms. The results can be simply explained by the heterogeneous distributions of reactants in the system. This study is helpful to better understand surface-initiated polymerization.

Dear Editor,Major depressive disorder(MDD)is one of the most common psychiatric illnesses that significantly increase the risk of suicide.1 Stress-triggered dysfunctions of microglia have been identified as a commonly occurred pathological feature of MDD.1–3 Microglial dysfunction contributes to the pathogenesis of MDD via immunoresponses/neuroinflammation-mediated neural damage and pathological synapse loss-mediated neural circuit disruption.1 Although the involvement of microglia in MDD has been widely investigated,the molecular mechanisms underlying microglial dysfunction remain largely unknown.Recently,we identified glutaminase 1(Gls1)as one key protein that participates in microglial dysfunction.4–6 Gls1 catalyzes the hydrolysis of glutamine to produce glutamate in the brain.4 Besides its well-known role in excitatory neurotoxicity,we found Gls1 up-regulation in microglia in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease and ischemic stroke.4,7 Gls1 activates microglia to overproduce cytokines and release inflammatory extracellular vesicles,therefore leading to neuroinflammation in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease and ischemic stroke.4–6 More importantly,Gls1 has been found to be up-regulated in the brains of MDD patients,and microglial Gls1 deficiency mitigated LPS-induced depression-like behaviors.8 However,LPS exposure is not an appropriate model to mimic MDD phenotypes,leaving the involvement of Gls1 in MDD an undetermined question.

Light-responsive Self-Immolative L-glutamic Acid-based Polyester Nanoparticles for Controlled Drug Release via Passerini Three-Component Polymerization

L-glutamic acid(LA)is a bio-based,non-toxic,environmentally friendly material derived from biomass.The present study reports the application of Passerini three-component polymerization(P-3CP)for the straightforward preparation of LA-based light-responsive polyesters(PLTDs)under mild conditions.PLTDs with molar masses up to 8500 g/mol and high yields exceeding 90%are obtained.The chemical structures and light-responsive self-immolative behavior of PLTDs are comprehensively characterized by employing ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)spectroscopy,size exclusion chromatography(SEC),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy,and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry(LC-MS).Meanwhile,monodisperse PLTD-based doxorubicin-loaded nanoparticles(PLTD-DOX-NP)(size=193 nm,PDI=0.018)are formulated by nanoprecipitation method.Upon light-induced depolymerization,the PLTD-DOX-NP undergoes rapid decomposition,resulting in a burst release of 80%cargo within 13 s.Furthermore,according to biological toxicity tests,the PLTD-NP possesses adequate biosafety,both before and after irradiation.Overall,the incorporation of P-3CP with biorenewable LA-based monomer adheres to the principles of green chemistry,significantly simplifying the synthetic pathway of light-responsive polymers.
