Integrated geological and geophysical investigations were carried out in 26 active mines in Northwestern china during the period 2001-2006 to explore for hidden extensions of known ore bodies and to search for new *** paper presents four case studies from northwest china:the Kuoerzhenkuoa volcanogenic hydro-thermal gold deposit,the Nanjinshan breccia-associated gold deposit,the Duolanasayi deposit,associated with a ductile-shear zone,and the Hulu magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide *** these studies,detailed mine-scale geological studies were carried out to determine the location and controls on ore *** on these investigations and a review of previous exploration data,genetic models for the deposits were evaluated,and specific new targets were *** target areas were tested with surface geophysical surveys using the stratagem EH4 system,a hybrid-source magnetotellurics(MT) *** of the data obtained in the surveys identified geophysical target anomalies that were subsequently *** of these test holes demonstrate the presence of Au and Cu-Ni *** of the geological models was crucial in developing conceptual targets as a basis for surface geophysical *** models established the most likely target areas where Au and Cu-Ni mineralization could occur,but they did not define the limits or the geometries of the mineralized *** MT surveys played an important role in defining the location of buried mineralized systems and in testing the validity of the conceptual *** resistivity cross-sections obtained by imaging the MT data established the boundaries and geometries of the host rocks,including the distribution of lithology,structures,alteration,and *** four case studies in this paper show how this integrated geological and geophysical approach was used successfully to discover hidden mineral deposits.

The sawur gold belt,the sawur Mountains,northern Xinjiang,china,is the eastwards extension of the Zarma-sawur goldcopper belt in *** Kuoerzhenkuola and Buerkesidai gold deposits are the two largest volcanic-hosted gold deposits in this belt,and are spatially associated with Early Carboniferous calc-alkaline volcanic rocks of the Heishantou *** are hosted in a caldera structure consisting of volcanic rocks and subvolcanic rocks,and controlled by a caldera fracture system superimposed by regional *** host rocks are main andesite in the Kuoerzhenkuola deposit,and carbonaceous silty tuff in the Buerkesidai deposit,respectively. Rare earth element(REE) chemistry,stable isotopes(H,o,C,s),radiogenic isotope(pb),and noble gas isotopes(He and Ar) have been used to discriminate the sources and evolutionary histories of the ore-forming fluid,and to evaluate the genesis in the Kuoerzhenkuola and Buerkesidai volcanic-hosted gold *** ore-forming fluids of the two deposits share the same origin, withδo andδD data indicating that the water of ore fluids was derived from magmatic water,diluted by meteoric waters. He/He and Ar/Ar values suggest that the He in the ore fluids consists of a mixture of mantle He with minor components of meteoric water He.δs values(0.33 to 2.85‰) show that the sulfur isotope composition of the ore fluids is characterized by mantle *** isotope compositions indicate that the majority of the lead in the ore fluids is mantle-derived,with minor lower crust-derived *** rock and pyrite REE data show that the volcanic rocks could have been a fertile source for the metals. The mantle-derived component in the ore-forming fluids from the two deposits decreased,and the meteoric water gradually increased from early to late mineralization *** and oxygen isotopes suggest that late stage mineralization may have been influenced by ***-Ar geochronological data show that mineralization is synchronous or

Volcanic rocks associated with Early Carboniferous gold mineralization are well exposed in the eastern part of sawur Mountains, Xinjiang,*** results for these volcanic rocks recognize the Eastern sawur caldera complex and broadly subdivide the volcanic -magmatic activity into the three cycles and nine *** Eastern sawur caldera complex consists of at least one elliptical andesite caldera,associated with later and smaller circular andesite caldera,mafic volcanic necks and mafic to felsic dikes. The effusive rocks have a transitional character from calc-alkaline to tholeiite,range from porphyritic basalts,basaltic andesites,andesites to dacites,are enriched in large ion lithophile elements(liLE) and depleted in high-field strength elements(HFsE) relative to NMoRB, with a pronounced negative Nb ***-normalized rare earth element(REE) patterns show enrichment in the light REE relative to heavy *** volcanic rocks have near-uniform initial sr/sr(0.70335-0.70362) and sup>143Nd/Nd(0.51254- 0.51259;ε = 3.5-4.7) *** rocks originated from the partial melting of a subduction-modified mantle wedge in a subduction *** wedge represents an enriched MoRB mantle source with some transfer of subduction components to the wedge during the magmas *** assimilation could have played a role in petrogenesis during the ascent of the *** characteristics of these volcanic rocks are consistent with their formation in a subduction-related tectonic setting during the Early Carboniferous. A close spatial and temporal relationship exists between the volcanic rocks and hydrothermal gold mineralization in the sawur Mountains.
