Investigating Factors Influencing the Stability of Enteral Nutritional Emulsions Designed for Cancer Patients

Objective A commercially available reference product was“re-engineered”and the target emulsion was formulated to contain the same energy density,as well as the same percentage of energy sources,as the reference product.The particle size and distribution,polydispersity index(PDI),and zeta-potential of emulsions were measured as indices to analyse the quality of the emulsions.Methods The centrifugal stability(Ke)was examined as the main measure of the stability of the target emulsion.Critical parameters affecting the stability of emulsions were also determined,while the temperature was fixed at 30℃,shear speed at 3500 r/min,and shear time was 15 min.The optimal quantity of emulsifier was also studied in the crude homogenate.Results A relatively stable emulsion could be obtained by using PC-50 at a dosage of 2%as the emulsifier.A 2∶1 proportion of whey protein to casein,a 1∶1 proportion of maltodextrin(DE 10-15)to maltodextrin(DE 15-20)and medium chain triglyceride(MCT)in powder form were used to obtain the most desirable emulsion.Conclusion This study explored the critical parameters that influence the stability of a total nutrition enteral emulsion designed for cancer patients,providing useful information for further industrialisation of this and other emulsion products.

Constrained nonlinear MPC for accelerated tracking piece-wise references and its applications to thermal systems

In this paper,we propose a model predictive control(MPC)strategy for accelerated offset-free tracking piece-wise constant reference signals of nonlinear systems subject to state and control constraints.Some special contractive constraints on tracking errors and terminal constraints are embedded into the tracking nonlinear MPC formulation.Then,recursive feasibility and closed-loop convergence of the tracking MPC are guaranteed in the presence of piece-wise references and constraints by deriving some sufficient conditions.Moreover,the local optimality of the tracking MPC is achieved for unreachable output reference signals.By comparing to traditional tracking MPC,the simulation experiment of a thermal system is used to demonstrate the acceleration ability and the effectiveness of the tracking MPC scheme proposed here.

Analysis of the Relationship between Mechanical Properties and Pore Structure of MSW Incineration Bottom Ash Fine Aggregate Concrete after Freeze-Thaw Cycles Based on the Gray Theory

The destruction of concrete building materials in severely cold regions of the north is more severely affected by freeze-thaw cycles,and the relationship between the mechanical properties and pore structure of concrete with fine aggregate from municipal solid waste(MSW)incineration bottom ash after freeze-thaw cycles is analyzed under the degree of freeze-thaw hazard variation.In this paper,the gray correlation method is used to calculate the correlation between the relative dynamic elastic modulus,compressive strength,and microscopic porosity parameters to speculate on the most important factors affecting their changes.The GM(1,1)model was established based on the compressive strength of the waste incineration ash aggregate concrete,the relative error between the simulated and actual values in the model was less than 5%,and the accuracy of the model was level 1,indicating that the GM(1,1)model can well reflect the change in the compressive strength of the MSW incineration bottom ash aggregate concrete during freeze-thaw cycles.Using the gray correlation method,the correlation between the relative dynamic elastic modulus,compressive strength,air content,specific surface area,pore spacing coefficient,and pore average chord length was calculated,and the pore spacing coefficient and pore average chord length were determined to be highly correlated with each other.This determination can help analyze and infer the deterioration mechanism of concrete subject to freeze-thaw cycles.These results can provide a theoretical basis for guiding the engineering practice of concrete with fine aggregates of household bottom ash in the northern cold region.

Mapping Seismic Hazard for Canadian Sites Using Spatially Smoothed Seismicity Model

The estimated seismic hazard based on the delineated seismic source model is used as the basis to assign the seismic design loads in Canadian structural design codes.An alternative for the estimation is based on a spatially smoothed source model.However,a quantification of differences in the Canadian seismic hazard maps(CanSHMs)obtained based on the delineated seismic source model and spatially smoothed model is unavailable.The quantification is valuable to identify epistemic uncertainty in the estimated seismic hazard and the degree of uncertainty in the CanSHMs.In the present study,we developed seismic source models using spatial smoothing and historical earthquake catalogue.We quantified the differences in the estimated Canadian seismic hazard by considering the delineated source model and spatially smoothed source models.For the development of the spatially smoothed seismic source models,we considered spatial kernel smoothing techniques with or without adaptive bandwidth.The results indicate that the use of the delineated seismic source model could lead to under or over-estimation of the seismic hazard as compared to those estimated based on spatially smoothed seismic source models.This suggests that an epistemic uncertainty caused by the seismic source models should be considered to map the seismic hazard.

Numerical investigation of the influence of vortex generator on propeller cavitation and hull pressure fluctuation by DDES

In this study,the delayed detached eddy simulation(DDES)is coupled with a homogenous cavitation model to simulate the cavitating turbulent flow around a propeller behind a full body ship with special emphasis on the influence of the vortex generator(VG)on the propeller cavitation and the hull pressure fluctuation.The small calculation uncertainty as evaluated by the DDES verification and validation(V&V)method indicates that the present simulation can accurately reproduce the propeller performance and cavitation,and the predicted hull pressure fluctuation is in a fairly good agreement with the available experimental data.The mechanism is explored through the current numerical results how the VG affects the local velocity distribution,along with the influences of the VG on the propeller cavitation and the hull pressure fluctuation.It is shown that the streamwise vortex is induced by the VG near the hull boundary layer.The very low velocity region in the hull wake is reduced due to the effect of the streamwise vortex.Besides,the propeller cavitation develops more mildly and the hull pressure fluctuation decreases due to the influence of the VG.

Multi-physics multi-scale simulation of unique equiaxed-to-columnar-to-equiaxed transition during the whole solidification process of Al-Li alloy laser welding

In this study,a novel multi-physics multi-scale model with the dilute multicomponent phase-field method in three-dimensional(3D)space was developed to investigate the complex microstructure evolu-tion in the molten pool during laser welding of Al-Li alloy.To accurately compute mass data within both two and three-dimensional computational domains,three efficient computing methods,including central processing unit parallel computing,adaptive mesh refinement,and moving-frame algorithm,were uti-lized.Emphasis was placed on the distinctive equiaxed-to-columnar-to-equiaxed transition phenomenon that occurs during the entire solidification process of Al-Li alloy laser welding.Simulation results indi-cated that the growth distance of columnar grains that epitaxially grew from the base metal(BM)de-creased as the nucleation rate increased.As the nucleation rate increased,the morphology of the newly formed grains near the fusion boundary(FB)changed from columnar to equiaxed,and newly formed equiaxed grains changed from having high-order dendrites to no obvious dendrite structure.When the nucleation rate was sufficiently high,non-dendritic equiaxed grains could directly form near the FB,and there was nearly no epitaxial growth from the BM.Additionally,simulation results illustrated the com-petition among multiple grains with varying orientations that grow in 3D space near the FB.Finally,how equiaxed grain bands develop was elucidated.The equiaxed band not only hindered the growth of early columnar grains but also some of its grains could grow epitaxially to form new columnar grains.These predicted results were in good agreement with experimental measurements and observations.

Remediation of nutrient-rich waters using the terrestrial plant, Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.

Effective control of eutrophication is generally established through the reduction of nutrient loading into waterways and water bodies. An economically viable and ecologically sustainable approach to nutrient pollution control could involve the integration of retention ponds, wetlands and greenways into water management systems. Plants not only play an invaluable role in the assimilation and removal of nutrients, but they also support fauna richness and can be aesthetically pleasing. Pandanus amaryllifolius, a tropical terrestrial plant, was found to establish well in hydrophytic conditions and was highly effective in remediating high nutrient levels in an aquatic environment showing 100% removal of NO^-N up to 200 mg/L in 14 days. Phosphate uptake by the plant was less efficient with 64% of the PO4-P removed at the maximum concentration of 100 mg/L at the end of 6 weeks. With its high NO^-N and PO43--P removal efficiency, P. amaryllifolius depleted the nutrient-rich media and markedly contained the natural colonization of algae. The impediment of algal growth led to improvements in the water quality with significant decreases in turbidity, pH and electrical conductivity. In addition, the plants did not show stress symptoms when grown in high nutrient levels as shown by the changes in their biomass, total soluble proteins and chlorophyll accumulation as well as photochemical efficiency. Thus, P. amaryUifolius is a potential candidate for the mitigation of nutrient pollution in phytoremediation systems in the tropics as the plant requires low maintenance, is tolerant to the natural variability of weather conditions and fluctuating hydro-periods, and exhibit good nutrient removal capabilities.

Nanocatalytic bacteria disintegration reverses immunosuppression of colorectal cancer

Tumor-associated bacteria(TAB) play a critically important role in regulating the microenvironment of a tumor, which consequently greatly deteriorates the therapeutic effects by chemo-and radiotherapy deactivation and, more considerably, leads to substantial immunosuppression. On the contrary, herein we propose a nanocatalytic tumor-immunotherapeutic modality based on the bacteria disintegration by bacteria-specific oxidative damage under magnetic hyperthermia for highly effective immune response activation-promoted tumor regression. A monodispersed and superparamagnetic nanocatalytic medicine modified by arginyl-glycyl-aspartic acid(RGD) and(3-carboxypropyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide(TPP), named as MNP-RGD-TPP herein, has been synthesized, which features selective accumulation at the TAB by the electrostatic affinity, enabling effective TAB disintegration by the nanocatalytic Fenton reaction producing abundant cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals in situ under alternating magnetic field-induced hyperthermia. More importantly, the lipopolysaccharide has been metabolically secreted from the destructed TAB as pathogen-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs) to M1-polarize tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs) and promote the maturation of dendritic cells(DCs) for innate immuno-response activation of TAMs, followed by cytotoxic T lymphocytes awakening under the PAMPs presentation by the mature DCs against tumor cells. The integrated innate and adaptive immunity activations based on this TAB-promoted nanocatalytic immunomedicine, instead of magnetic heating-induced hyperthermia or the released Fe2+/Fe3+Fenton agent, has been found to achieve excellent therapeutic efficacy in an orthotopic colorectal cancer model, demonstrating the great potential of such an integrated immunity strategy in clinical tumor immunotherapy.

Simplified Modeling and Mathematical Analysis in Cardiac Electric Field Propagation for Human and Animals

The different characteristics of cardiac electric field(CEF)radiation in humans and other animals are presented in this paper.Physical modeling and mathematical analysis are developed to comprehensively unveil the properties of CEF,based on typical heartbeat waveforms.Our numerical simulation results demonstrate that the frequency bandwidths and the cycle durations of CEF are different for healthy humans versus humans on the verge of death and for humans versus other animals.The results indicate that the present study may extensively contribute towards recognizing human beings or other animal targets quickly and accurately with CEF in dangerous situations or in other applications.

Expression of TRAP1 in gastric cancer tissue and its correlation with malignant biology

Objective:To study the expression of tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1(TRAP1)in gastric cancer tissue and its correlation with malignant biology.Methods:Gastric cancer tissue and adjacent normal tissue were collected,and mRNA content and protein content of TRAP1 were detected;gastric cancer cell lines SGC7901,BGC823,AGS and MGC803 were cultured,and mRNA contents and protein contents of TRAP1,CyclinB1,CyclinD1,CyclinE,MMP-2 and VEGF were detected.Results:mRNA and protein expression levels of TRAP1 in gastric cancer tissue were significantly higher than those in adjacent normal tissue,and mRNA and protein expression levels of TRAP1 in gastric cancer tissue with muscularis and serosa infiltration,lymph node metastasis,distant organ metastasis and TNM Ⅲ/Ⅳ stage were significantly higher than those in gastric cancer tissue with mucosa and submucosa infiltration,non-lymph node metastasis,non-distant organ metastasis and TNM Ⅰ/Ⅱ stage.mRNA and protein expression levels of TRAP1,CyclinB1,CyclinD1,CyclinE,MMP-2 and VEGF in MGC803 were the highest,and mRNA and protein expression levels of TRAP1,CyclinB1,CyclinD1,CyclinE,MMP-2 and VEGF in SGC7901 were the lowest.mRNA and protein expression levels of TRAP1 in gastric cancer cell lines were positively correlated with mRNA and protein expression of CyclinB1,CyclinD1.CyclinE,MMP-2 and VEGF.Conclusions:The expression of TRAP1 significantly increases in gastric cancer tissue;TRAP1 may regulate the malignant biology of cells by increasing the expression of CyclinB1,CyclinD1,CyclinE,MMP-2 and VEGF,thereby resulting in the occurrence and development of gastric cancer.
