The present study aim.d to evaluate m.lti-elem.nt concentrations(Al,As,Ca,Cd,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,m.,m.,m.,Ni,Pb,Sr)in suspended particulate m.terial(SPm.collected from.Ensenada de La Paz(ELP)lagoon,Baja California Sur,m.xico in two different periods(Septem.er and m.y)to com.rehend their origin,geochem.cal behavior,m.ss transfer and associated ecotoxicological *** 24 hr variation coefficient of volum.tric SPm.levels were found to be 51.7%in Septem.er and 40.5%in m.y,signifying the effects of oceanic *** calculated enrichm.nt factor(EF)values for all the studied elem.nts were of higher m.gnitude because of the high surface area and oxide nature of SPm.and in this study,m. had the highest EF of 46.77 probably due to its origin from.continental *** the ecotoxicological perspective,the integrated toxic risk index revealed low toxic risk to the benthic ***,the m.an-ERm.Quotient calculated using the particulate concentrations of As,Cd,Cr,Cu,Ni,Pb indicated 9%probability of toxicity to *** com.rehensive geochem.cal and ecotoxicological assessm.nt of particulate m.tal concentrations in the ELP lagoon signify low to m.derate contam.nation.

This study exam.ned the ability of the white lupin to rem.ve m.rcury （Hg） from.a hydroponic system.（Hg concentrations 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 μm.l/L） and from.soil in pots and lysim.ters （total Hg concentration （19.2 ± 1.9） m./kg availability 0.07%, and （28.9 ± 0.4） m./kg availability 0.09%, respectively）, and investigated the accum.lation and distribution of Hg in different parts of the plant. White lupin roots efficiently took up Hg, but its translocation to the harvestable parts of the plant was low. The Hg concentration in the seeds posed no risk to hum.n health according to the recom.endations of the World Health Organization, but the shoots should not be used as fodder for livestock, at least when unm.xed with other fodder crops. The accum.lation of Hg in the hydroponically-grown plants was linear over the concentration range tested. The am.unt of Hg retained in the roots, relative to the shoots, was alm.st constant irrespective of Hg dose （90%）. In the soil experim.nts, Hg accum.lation increased with exposure tim. and was the greater in the lysim.ter than in the pot experim.nts. Although Hg rem.val was the greater in the hydroponic system. revealing the potential of the white lupin to extract Hg, bioaccum.lation was the greatest in the lysim.ter-grown plants; the latter system.m.re likely reflects the true behaviour of white lupin in the field when Hg availability is a factor that lim.ts Hg rem.val. The present results suggest that the white lupin could be used in long-term.soil reclam.tion strategies that include the goal of profitable land use in Hg-polluted areas.

Brucella suis is responsible for swine brucellosis worldwide. Of the five different B. suis biovars （by.）, bv. 2 appears restricted to Europe where it is frequently isolated from.wild boar and hares, can infect pigs and can cause hum.n brucellosis. In this study, the differ- ential gene expression profile was characterized in spleens of Eurasian wild boar naturally infected with B. suis bv. 2. Of the 20,201 genes analyzed in the m.croarray, 633 and 1,373 were significantly （fold change 〉 1.8; P 〈 0.01） upregulated and downregulated, respectively, in infected wild boar. The analysis was focused on genes that were over represented after conditional test for biological process gene ontology. Upregulated genes suggested that B. suis bv. 2 infection induced cell m.turation, m.gration and/or proliferation in infected anim.ls. The genes downregulated in infected wild boar im.aired the activity of several im.ortant cellular m.tabolic pathways such as m.tabolism. cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis, im.une response and lysosom.l function and vesicle-m.diated transport. In addition, the response to stress, sperm.fertility, m.scle developm.nt and apoptosis seem.d to be also im.aired in infected anim.ls. These results suggested that B. suis bv. 2 m.y use strategies sim.lar to other sm.oth brucellae to facilitate intracellular m.ltiplication and the developm.nt of chronic infections. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the analysis of gene expression profile in hosts infected with B. suis bv. 2, which is im.ortant to understand the m.lecular m.chanism. at the host-pathogen interface in the m.in reservoir species with possible im.lications in the zoonotic cycle of the pathogen.

This study was designed to analyze the sperm.kinem.tic and m.rphom.tric subpopulations in the different fractions of the ejaculate in norm.zoosperm.c m.n. Ejaculates from.eight norm.zoosperm.c m.n were collected by m.sturbation in three fractions after 3-5 days of sexual abstinence. Analyses of sperm.m.tility by com.uter-assisted sperm.analysis （CASA-m.t）, and of sperm.m.rphom.try by com.uter-assisted sperm.m.rphom.try analysis （CASA-m.rph） using fluorescence were perform.d. Clustering and discrim.nant procedures were perform.d to identify sperm.subpopulations in the kinem.tic and m.rphom.tric data obtained. Clustering procedures resulted in the classification of sperm.tozoa into three kinem.tic subpopulations （slow with low ALH [35.6% of all m.tile sperm.tozoa], with circular trajectories [32.0%], and rapid with high ALH [32.4%]）, and three m.rphom.tric subpopulations （large-round [33.9% of all sperm.tozoa], elongated [32.0%], and sm.ll [34.10%]）. The distribution of kinem.tic sperm.subpopulations was different am.ng ejaculate fractions （P 〈 0.001）, with higher percentages of sperm.tozoa exhibiting slow m.vem.nts with low ALH in the second and third portions, and with a m.re hom.geneous distribution of kinem.tic sperm.subpopulations in the first portion. The distribution of m.rphom.tric sperm.subpopulations was also different am.ng ejaculate fractions （P〈 0.001）, with m.re elongated sperm.tozoa in the first, and of sm.ll sperm.tozoa in the third, portion. It is concluded that im.ortant variations in the distribution of kinem.tic and m.rphom.tric sperm.subpopulations exist between ejaculate fractions, with possible functional im.lications.

This study was designed to characterize m.rphom.tric sperm.subpopulations in norm.zoosperm.c m.n by using different statistical m.thods and exam.ning their suitability to classify correctly different sperm.nuclear m.rphologies present in hum.n ejaculates. Ejaculates from.21 norm.zoosperm.c m.n were collected for the study. After sem.n collection and analysis, sam.les were prepared for m.rphom.tric determ.nation. At least 200 sperm.tozoa per sam.le were assessed for sperm.m.rphom.try by com.uter-assisted sperm.m.rphom.try analysis （CASA-m.rph） using fluorescence. Clustering and discrim.nant procedures were perform.d to identify sperm.subpopulations from.the m.rphom.tric data obtained. Clustering procedures resulted in the classification of sperm.tozoa into three m.rphom.tric subpopulations （large-round 30.4%, sm.ll-round 46.6%, and large-elongated 22.9%）. In the second analysis, using discrim.nant m.thods, the classification was m.de independently of size and shape. Three m.rphological categories according to nuclear size （sm.ll 〈10.90 μm.2, interm.diate 10.91-13.07 μm.2, and large 〉13.07 μm.2） and four categories were defined on 400 canonical cells （100 × 4） from.10 m.n according to sperm.nuclear shape （oval, pyriform. round, and elongated）. Thereafter, the resulting classification functions were used to categorize 4200 sperm.tozoa from.21 m.n. Differences in the class distribution were observed am.ng m.n from.both clustering and discrim.nant procedures. It was concluded that the com.ination of CASA-m.rph fluorescence-based technology with m.ltivariate cluster or discrim.nant analyses provides new inform.tion on the description of different m.rphom.tric sperm.subpopulations in norm.l individuals, and that im.ortant variations in the distribution of m.rphom.tric sperm.subpopulations m.y exist between m.n, with possible functional im.lications.

The Iberian wall lizard Podarcis hispanica form. part of a species com.lex with several m.rphologically and geneti- cally distinct types and populations, which m.y or m.y not be reproductively isolated. We analyzed whether fem.le m.te choice based on m.les＇ chem.cal signals m.y contribute to a current pre-m.ting reproductive isolation between two distinct populations of P. hispanica from.central Spain. We experim.ntally exam.ned whether fem.les choose to establish territories on areas scent-m.rked by m.les of their own population, versus areas m.rked by m.les of the other population. Results showed that fe- m.les did not prefer scent-m.rks of m.les from.their own population. In contrast, fem.les seem.d to attend m.stly to am.ng-individual variation in m.les＇ pherom.nes that did not differ between populations. Finally, to test for strong prem.ting re- productive isolation, we staged intersexual encounters between m.les and fem.les. The population of origin of m.les and fem.les did not affect the probability nor the duration of copulations. We suggest that the different environm.ntal conditions in each population m.ght be selecting for different m.rphologies and different chem.cal signals of m.les that m.xim.ze efficiency of com.unication in each environm.nt. However, fem.les in both populations based m.te choice on a sim.lar condition-dependent signal of m.les. Thus, m.le signals and fem.le m.te choice criteria could be precluding prem.ting reproductive isolation between these phenotypically ＂distinct＂ populations [Current Zoology 59 （2）： 210-220, 2013].
