Defining metabolic activity of nephrolithiasis--Appropriate evaluation and follow-up of stone formers

Considering the variation in metabolic evaluation and medical management of kidney stone disease,this consensus review was created to discuss the metabolic activity of nephrolithiasis,define the difference between single and recurrent stone formers,and develop a schema for metabolic and radiologic follow-up.A systematic review of the literature was performed to identify studies of metabolic evaluation and follow-up of patients with *** single and recurrent stone formers share many similarities in metabolic *** study group determined that based on an assessment of risk for stone recurrence and metabolic activity,single and recurrent stone formers should be evaluated comprehensively,including two 24 h urine studies on a random *** medication and dietary recommendations are effective for many patients in reducing the risk of stone ***-up of those with stone disease should be obtained depending on the level of metabolic activity of the patient,the risk of chronic kidney disease and the risk of osteoporosis/osteopenia.A standard scheme includes a baseline metabolic profile,a repeat study 3e6 months after initiation of treatment,and then yearly when stable,with abdominal imaging obtained every 1-2 years.

Using a single biological element as a photonic component with well-defined features has become a new intriguing paradigm in *** we show that endogenous lipid droplets in the mature adipose cells can behave as fully biocompatible microlenses to strengthen the ability of microscopic imaging as well as detecting intra-and extracellular *** the assistance of biolenses made of the lipid droplets,enhanced fluorescence imaging of cytoskeleton,lysosomes,and adenoviruses has been *** the same time,we demonstrated that the required excitation power can be reduced by up to 73%.The lipidic microlenses are finely manipulated by optical tweezers in order to address targets and perform their real-time imaging inside the *** efficient detecting of fluorescence signal of cancer cells in extracellular fluid was accomplished due to the focusing effect of incident light by the lipid *** lipid droplets acting as endogenous intracellular microlenses open the intriguing route for a multifunctional biocompatible optics tool for biosensing,endoscopic imaging,and single-cell diagnosis.

The appearance of the first laser approximately 12 years after the invention of holography by Gabor(1948)revolutionized the field of optical *** fact,the invention of holographic interferometry enabled the exploitation of interferometry on non-mirror surfaces and full-scale *** holography-based measurement methods has been implemented to several industrial systems or in support of R&D with the aim of improving new products in many fields(automotive,aerospace,electronics,etc.).To date,holography has been considered an important measurement tool for non-destructive inspection(NDI),strain-stress measurement,and vibration analysis at various engineering ***,the new paradigm of Industry4.0 has seen the introduction of new technologies and methods of processing materials as well as the development of manufacturing approaches for the realization of innovative *** example,direct printing,additive,and bottom-up manufacturing processes are expected to involve new ways of making products in future,and most innovative fabrication processes will be based on the manipulation of soft matter(e.g.,starting from the liquid phase)that will be shaped at the *** inherent characteristics of digital holography(DH)make it a powerful and accurate tool for the visualization and testing of final products,as well as for in situ and real-time monitoring and quantitative characterization of the processes involved during the fabrication *** review aims to report on the most useful applications of soft matter,where the capabilities offered by DH,such as three-dimensional(3D)imaging,extended focus,3D tracking,full-field analysis,high sensitivity,and a wide range of measurements from nanometers to centimeters,permit completely non-invasive characterizations on a *** holographic experimental results of typical samples are reported and discussed where DH plays a primary role as a tool gauge for soft matter.

The dynamics and stability of thin liquid films have fascinated scientists over many *** film flows are central to numerous areas of engineering,geophysics,and biophysics and occur over a wide range of lengths,velocities,and liquid property *** spite of many significant developments in this area,we still lack appropriate quantitative experimental tools with the spatial and temporal resolution necessary for a comprehensive study of film *** propose tackling this problem with a holographic technique that combines quantitative phase imaging with a custom setup designed to form and manipulate *** results,gathered on a model aqueous polymeric solution,provide unparalleled insight into bubble dynamics through the combination of a full-field thickness estimation,threedimensional imaging,and a fast acquisition *** unprecedented level of detail offered by the proposed methodology will promote a deeper understanding of the underlying physics of thin film dynamics.

One of the main drawbacks of Digital Holography(DH)is the coherent nature of the light source,which severely corrupts the quality of holographic *** numerous techniques to reduce noise in DH have provided good results,holographic noise suppression remains a challenging *** propose a novel framework that combines the concepts of encoding multiple uncorrelated digital holograms,block grouping and collaborative filtering to achieve quasi noise-free DH *** optimized joint action of these different image-denoising methods permits the removal of up to 98%of the noise while preserving the image *** resulting quality of the hologram reconstructions is comparable to the quality achievable with non-coherent techniques and far beyond the current state of art in *** validation is provided for both singlewavelength and multi-wavelength DH,and a comparison with the most used holographic denoising methods is performed.

The most recent discoveries in the biochemical field are highlighting the increasingly important role of lipid droplets(LDs)in several regulatory mechanisms in living *** are dynamic organelles and therefore their complete characterization in terms of number,size,spatial positioning and relative distribution in the cell volume can shed light on the roles played by *** now,fluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are assessed as the gold standard methods for identifying LDs due to their high sensitivity and ***,such methods generally only provide 2D assays and partial ***,both can be destructive and with low productivity,thus limiting analysis of large cell numbers in a *** we demonstrate for the first time the capability of 3D visualization and the full LD characterization in high-throughput with a tomographic phase-contrast flow-cytometer,by using ovarian cancer cells and monocyte cell lines as models.A strategy for retrieving significant parameters on spatial correlations and LD 3D positioning inside each cell volume is *** information gathered by this new method could allow more in depth understanding and lead to new discoveries on how LDs are correlated to cellular functions.
