The measurement of proprioceptive accuracy:A systematic literature review

Background:Proprioceptive accuracy refers to the individual’s ability to perceive proprioceptive information,that is,the information referring to the actual state of the locomotor system,which originates from mechanoreceptors located in various parts of the locomotor system and from tactile receptors located in the skin.Proprioceptive accuracy appears to be an important aspect in the evaluation of sensorimotor functioning;however,no widely accepted standard assessment exists.In this systematic review,our goal was to identify and categorize different methods that are used to assess different aspects of proprioceptive accuracy.Methods:A literature search was conducted in 5 different databases(PubMed,SPORTDiscus,PsycINFO,ScienceDirect,and SpringerLink).Results:Overall,1139 scientific papers reporting 1346 methods were included in this review.The methods assess 8 different aspects of proprioception:(a)the perception of joint position,(b)movement and movement extent,(c)trajectory,(d)velocity,and the sense of(e)force,(f)muscle tension,(g)weight,and(h)size.They apply various paradigms of psychophysics(i.e.,the method of adjustment,constant stimuli,and limits).Conclusion:As the outcomes of different tasks with respect to various body parts show no associations(i.e.,proprioceptive accuracy is characterized by site-specificity and method-specificity),the appropriate measurement method for the task needs to be chosen based on theoretical considerations and/or ecological validity.

Introduction:Ever since the discovery of neural stem cells(NSCs)in the adult mammalian brain,scientists have been trying to decipher which signals govern their turnover and lineage commitment to generate neurons and glia.Understanding their role in nervous tissue homeostasis can provide new insights into the etiology of several neurological disorders,and might one day be turned to our advantage to promote endogenous brain injury repair.Others and we have identified thyroid hormone(TH)as a key factor transcriptionally regulating NSC behavior in the largest niche of the adult mammalian brain:the subventricular zone(SVZ).

A combination of the viscoelastic properties of hyaluronic acid(HA)and the elastic properties of star shaped 8-arm poly(ethylene glycol)(8-arm PEG)was used to design in-situ forming hydrogels.Hydrogels were prepared by the enzymatic crosslinking of a partially tyramine modified 8-arm PEG and a tyramine conjugated HA using horseradish peroxidase in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.Hydrogels of the homopolymer conjugates and mixtures thereof were rapidly formed within seconds under physiological conditions at low polymer and enzyme concentrations.Elastic hydrogels with high gel content(≥95%)and high storage moduli(up to 22.4 kPa)were obtained.An in vitro study in the presence of hyaluronidase(100 U/mL)revealed that with increasing PEG content the degradation time of the hybrid hydrogels increased up to several weeks,whereas hydrogels composed of only hyaluronic acid degraded within 2 weeks.Human mesenchymal stem cells(hMSCs)incorporated in the hybrid hydrogels remained viable as shown by a PrestoBlue and a live-dead assay,confirming the biocompatibility of the constructs.The production of an extracellular matrix by re-differentiation of encapsulated human chondrocytes was followed over a period of 28 days.Gene expression indicated that these highly elastic hydrogels induced an enhanced production of collagen type II.At low PEG-TA/HA-TA ratios a higher expression of SOX 9 and ACAN was observed.These results indicate that by modulating the ratio of PEG/HA,injectable hydrogels can be prepared applicable as scaffolds for tissue regeneration applications.

One hundred marathons in 100 days:Unique biomechanical signature and the evolution of force characteristics and bone density

Background:An extraordinary long-term running performance may benefit from low dynamic loads and a high load-bearing tolerance.An extraordinary runner(age=55 years,height=1.81 m,mass=92 kg) scheduled a marathon a day for 100 consecutive days.His running biomechanics and bone density were investigated to better understand successful long-term running in the master athlete.Methods:Overground running gait analysis and bone densitometry were conducted before the marathon-a-day challenge and near its completion.The case’s running biomechanics were compared pre-challenge to 31 runners who were matched by a similar foot strike pattern.Results:The case’s peak vertical loading rate(Δx=-61.9 body weight(BW)/s or-57%),peak vertical ground reaction force(Δx=-0.38 BW or-15%),and peak braking force(Δx=-0.118 BW or-31%) were remarkably lower(p<0.05) than the control group at~3.3 m/s.The relatively low loading-related magnitudes were attributed to a remarkably high duty factor(0.41) at the evaluated speed.The foot strike angle of the marathoner(29.5°) was greater than that of the control group,affecting the peak vertical loading rate.Muscle powers in the lower extremity were also remarkably low in the case vs.controls:peak power of knee absorption(Δx=-9.16 watt/kg or-48%) and ankle generation(Δx=-3.17 watt/kg or-30%).The bone mineral density increased to 1.245 g/cm;(+2.98%) near completion of the challenge,whereas the force characteristics showed no statistically significant change.Conclusion:The remarkable pattern of the high-mileage runner may be useful in developing or evaluating load-shifting strategies in distance running.

Triggering,locking,clicking,and crepitus of the fingers are common symptoms patients present with.Even though crepitus and triggering can occur as part of the same underlying diagnosis,it is important to differentiate between them,as they usually indicate different possible diagnoses.The differential diagnoses that should be considered include trigger finger,metacarpophalangeal joint(MCPJ)arthritis,fractures or dislocations,extensor digitorum communis subluxation or dislocation,locked MCPJ,avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head,and Dupuytren’s disease.A thorough clinical examination with appropriate special investigations can permit the clinician to make the correct diagnosis.Appropriate management of a confirmed diagnosis is successful in providing symptomatic improvement.

Muscle fibers are multinucleated,and muscle fiber nuclei(myonuclei)are believed to be post-mitotic and are typically situated near the periphery of the myofiber.Due to the unique organization of muscle fibers and their nuclei,the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating myofiber homeostasis in unstressed and stressed conditions(e.g.,exercise)are unique.A key role myonuclei play in regulating muscle during exercise is gene transcription.Only recently have investigators had the capability to identify molecular changes at high resolution exclusively in myonuclei in response to perturbations in vivo.The purpose of this review is to describe how myonuclei modulate their transcriptome,epigenetic status,mobility and shape,and microRNA expression in response to exercise in vivo.Given the relative paucity of high-fidelity information on myonucleus-specific contributions to exercise adaptation,we identify specific gaps in knowledge and provide perspectives on future directions of research.

High rate production of concentrated sulfides from metal bearing wastewater in an expanded bed hydrogenotrophic sulfate reducing bioreactor

Metallurgical wastewaters contain high concentrations of sulfate,up to 15 g L^(-1).Sulfate-reducing bioreactors are employed to treat these wastewaters,reducing sulfates to sulfides which subsequently coprecipitate metals.Sulfate loading and reduction rates are typically restricted by the total H2S concentration.Sulfide stripping,sulfide precipitation and dilution are the main strategies employed to minimize inhibition by H2S,but can be adversely compromised by suboptimal sulfate reduction,clogging and additional energy costs.Here,metallurgical wastewater was treated for over 250 days using two hydrogenotrophic granular activated carbon expanded bed bioreactors without additional removal of sulfides.H2S toxicity was minimized by operating at pH 8±0.15,resulting in an average sulfate removal of 7.08±0.08 g L^(-1),sulfide concentrations of 2.1±0.2 g L^(-1) and peaks up to 2.3±0.2 g L^(-1).A sulfate reduction rate of 20.6±0.9 g L^(-1)d^(-1) was achieved,with maxima up to 27.2 g L^(-1)d^(-1),which is among the highest reported considering a literature review of 39 studies.The rates reported here are 6e8 times higher than those reported for other reactors without active sulfide removal and the only reported for expanded bed sulfate-reducing bioreactors using H2.By increasing the influent sulfate concentration and maintaining high sulfide concentrations,sulfate reducers were promoted while fermenters and methanogens were suppressed.Industrial wastewater containing 4.4 g L^(-1) sulfate,0.036 g L^(-1) nitrate and various metals(As,Fe,Tl,Zn,Ni,Sb,Co and Cd)was successfully treated with all metal(loid)s,nitrates and sulfates removed below discharge limits.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

In a recent review published in this journal,Coutts et al.(2019)compared nine different ways to estimate the maximum depositional age(MDA)of siliclastic rocks by means of detrital geochronology.Their results show that among these methods three are positively and six negatively biased.This paper investigates the cause of these biases and proposes a solution to it.A simple toy example shows that it is theoretically impossible for the reviewed methods to find the correct depositional age in even a best case scenario:the MDA estimates drift to ever smaller values with increasing sample size.The issue can be solved using a maximum likelihood model that was originally developed for fission track thermochronology by Galbraith and Laslett(1993).This approach parameterises the MDA estimation problem with a binary mixture of discrete and continuous distributions.The‘Maximum Likelihood Age’(MLA)algorithm converges to a unique MDA value,unlike the ad hoc methods reviewed by Coutts et al.(2019).It successfully recovers the depositional age for the toy example,and produces sensible results for realistic distributions.This is illustrated with an application to a published dataset of 13 sandstone samples that were analysed by both LA-ICPMS and CA-TIMS U–Pb geochronology.The ad hoc algorithms produce unrealistic MDA estimates that are systematically younger for the LA-ICPMS data than for the CA-TIMS data.The MLA algorithm does not suffer from this negative bias.The MLA method is a purely statistical approach to MDA estimation.Like the ad hoc methods,it does not readily accommodate geological complications such as post-depositional Pb-loss,or analytical issues causing erroneously young outliers.The best approach in such complex cases is to re-analyse the youngest grains using more accurate dating techniques.The results of the MLA method are best visualised on radial plots.Both the model and the plots have applications outside detrital geochronology,for example to determine volcanic eruption ages.

Investigating the use cases of a novel heat battery in Dutch residential buildings

Recent advances in thermochemical storage technology have introduced a novel closed-loop thermal energy storage(TES)system,known as the heat battery(HB),which is believed to have great potential for aiding the energy transition in the built environment because of its higher energy density and neglectable storage loss compared to conventional TES systems.In order to investigate the potential use cases of the HB and provide practical feedback for its further development,this research employs a simulation-based approach to analyze its influence on building performance in various use cases within Dutch residential buildings.Stakeholders including the homeowner,distribution system operator,and district heating system operator are identified,and a preliminary list of use cases is defined based on relevant literature and input from the HB developer.The simulation approach is conducted to predict key performance indicators for each stakeholder.The Kruskal-Wallis test was employed to sort and scrutinize the simulation outcomes and discern the significance of each use case element.The findings demonstrated that the HB holds the potential to diminish both the operational energy cost by up to 30%for the homeowners and the peak heating load transmitted from the building to the district heating system.
