Investigating the use cases of a novel heat battery in Dutch residential buildings

Recent advances in thermochemical storage technology have introduced a novel closed-loop thermal energy storage(TES)system,known as the heat battery(HB),which is believed to have great potential for aiding the energy transition in the built environment because of its higher energy density and neglectable storage loss compared to conventional TES systems.In order to investigate the potential use cases of the HB and provide practical feedback for its further development,this research employs a simulation-based approach to analyze its influence on building performance in various use cases within Dutch residential buildings.Stakeholders including the homeowner,distribution system operator,and district heating system operator are identified,and a preliminary list of use cases is defined based on relevant literature and input from the HB developer.The simulation approach is conducted to predict key performance indicators for each stakeholder.The Kruskal-Wallis test was employed to sort and scrutinize the simulation outcomes and discern the significance of each use case element.The findings demonstrated that the HB holds the potential to diminish both the operational energy cost by up to 30%for the homeowners and the peak heating load transmitted from the building to the district heating system.

This review provides an overview of the current state of the art of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in in vivo investigations of diffuse liver disease. So far, MRS of the human liver in vivo has mainly been used as a research tool rather than a clinical tool. The liver is particularly suitable for static and dynamic metabolic studies due to its high metabolic activity. Furthermore, its relatively superfi cial position allows excellent MRS localization, while its large volume allows detection of signals with relatively low intensity. This review describes the application of MRS to study the metabolic consequences of different conditions including diffuse and chronic liver diseases, congenital diseases, diabetes, and the presence of a distant malignancy on hepatic metabolism. In addition, future prospects of MRS are discussed. It is anticipated that future technical developments such as clinical MRS magnets with higher fi eld strength (3 T) and improved delineation of multicomponent signals such as phosphomonoester and phosphodiester using proton decoupling, especially if combined with price reductions for stable isotope tracers, will lead to intensifi ed research into metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, hepato-biliary diseases, as well as non-metastatic liver metabolism in patients with a distant malignant tumor.

Background:Proprioceptive accuracy refers to the individual’s ability to perceive proprioceptive information,that is,the information referring to the actual state of the locomotor system,which originates from mechanoreceptors located in various parts of the locomotor system and from tactile receptors located in the skin.Proprioceptive accuracy appears to be an important aspect in the evaluation of sensorimotor functioning;however,no widely accepted standard assessment exists.In this systematic review,our goal was to identify and categorize different methods that are used to assess different aspects of proprioceptive accuracy.Methods:A literature search was conducted in 5 different databases(PubMed,SPORTDiscus,PsycINFO,ScienceDirect,and SpringerLink).Results:Overall,1139 scientific papers reporting 1346 methods were included in this review.The methods assess 8 different aspects of proprioception:(a)the perception of joint position,(b)movement and movement extent,(c)trajectory,(d)velocity,and the sense of(e)force,(f)muscle tension,(g)weight,and(h)size.They apply various paradigms of psychophysics(i.e.,the method of adjustment,constant stimuli,and limits).conclusion:As the outcomes of different tasks with respect to various body parts show no associations(i.e.,proprioceptive accuracy is characterized by site-specificity and method-specificity),the appropriate measurement method for the task needs to be chosen based on theoretical considerations and/or ecological validity.

cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Most cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathy, are associated with loss of functional cardiomyocytes. Unfortunately, the heart has a limited regenerative capacity and is not able to replace these cardiomyocytes once lost. In recent years, stem cells have been put forward as a potential source for cardiac regeneration. Pre-clinical studies that use stem cell-derived cardiac cells show promising results. The mechanisms,though, are not well understood, results have been variable, sometimes transient in the long term, and often without a mechanistic explanation.There are still severalmajor hurdles to be taken. Stem cell-derived cardiac cells should resemble original cardiac cell types and be able to integrate in the damaged heart. Integration requires administration of stem cell-derived cardiac cells at the right time using the right mode of delivery. Once delivered, transplanted cells need vascularization, electrophysiological coupling with the injured heart, and prevention of immunological rejection. Finally, stem cell therapy needs to be safe, reproducible, and affordable. In this review, we will give an introduction to the principles of stem cell based cardiac repair.

Poly(glycolic acid)is a biocompatible as well as biocomposable polymer with superior mechanical and barrier properties and,consequently,has found important applications in both medical and packaging fields.However,the high hydrolysis rate in a high humidity environment restricts its application.In this work,a solid-state drawing process after melt extrusion is applied in order to produce fibrous PGA with enhanced mechanical properties and a much better resistance towards hydrolysis.The crystal structure of PGA gradually transformed from spherulites into oriented fibrous crystals in the stretching direction upon solid-state drawing.Meanwhile,both the length of microfibril and the size of lamellae increased initially with the drawing ratio(DR),while the chain-folded lamellae transformed into extended-chain fibrils at high(er)DR.The oriented structures lead to an overall improvement of the mechanical properties of PGA,e.g.,the tensile strength increased from 62.0±1.4 MPa to 910±54 MPa and the elongation at break increased from around 7%to 50%.Meanwhile,the heat capacity of totally mobile amorphous PGA(∆c_(p)^(0)=0.64 J·g^(−1)·℃^(−1))was reported for the first time,which was used to analyze the content of mobile amorphous fraction(XMAF)and rigid amorphous fraction(XRAF).Both the oriented chain-folded lamellae crystals and the tightly arranged RAF are beneficial to prevent water molecules from penetrating the matrix,thus improving the resistance towards hydrolysis.As a consequence,the fibrous PGA with a DR of 5 showed a tensile strength retention rate of 17.3%higher in comparison with the undrawn sample after 7-days accelerated hydrolysis.Therefore,this work provides a feasible method to improve the mechanical and resistance towards hydrolysis performance of PGA,which may broaden its application and prolong the shelf-life of PGA products.

Background:Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)of rodents combined with histol-ogy allows to determine what mechanisms underlie functional and structural brain changes during sepsis-associated encephalopathy.However,the effects of MRI per-formed in isoflurane-anesthetized rodents on modifications of the blood-brain bar-rier and the production of vasoactive prostaglandins and glia cells,which have been proposed to mediate sepsis-associated brain dysfunction,are unknown.Methods:This study addressed the effect of MRI under isoflurane anesthesia on blood-brain barrier integrity,cyclooxygenase-2 expression,and glial cell activation during cecal ligature and puncture-induced sepsis-associated brain dysfunction in rats.Results:cecal ligature and puncture reduced food intake and the righting reflex.MRI under isoflurane anesthesia reduced blood-brain barrier breakdown,decreased cir-cularity of white matter astrocytes,and increased neuronal cyclooxygenase-2 immu-noreactivity in the cortex 24 hours after laparotomy.In addition,it annihilated cecal ligature and puncture-induced increased circularity of white matter microglia.MRI under isoflurane anesthesia,however,did not alter sepsis-associated perivascular cyclooxygenase-2 induction.conclusion:These findings indicate that MRI under isoflurane anesthesia of rodents can modify neurovascular and glial responses and should,therefore,be interpreted with caution.

Evaluation of the Effect of Aspirin on Platelet Aggregation: Methodological Recommendations for Aspirin-Drug Interaction Studies

Given the broad application of aspirin as antiplatelet drug, availability of standardized methodology to assess potential interaction with any co-medication on platelet aggregation is desired. We characterized the effect of aspirin (ASA) therapy on collagen-induced platelet aggregation in whole blood to define such methodology. collagen-induced platelet whole blood aggregation was assessed in 6 healthy male volunteers on 2 occasions (Day 1, Day 7) using the chronolog aggregometer. From Day 2 up to Day 7, subjects received a daily oral dose of 75 mg ASA. The relationship between collagen dose and platelet aggregation response was assessed. On Day 1, maximal aggregation was observed at 1 μg/mL collagen (15.3 ± 4.6 Ω) and higher. Reproducible results were obtained without any indication of intra-subject fluctuations. ASA treatment decreased maximal aggregation by 80% and 38% at 0.5 and 2.0 μg/mL collagen, respectively. Power calculations were performed based on the observed intra-subject variability and demonstrated minimal sample sizes of 9 - 11 subjects for future cross-over ASA-drug interaction studies exploring effects on platelet aggregation, which demonstrates that the proposed collagen-induced ex vivo whole blood platelet aggregation is a feasible methodology to evaluate ASA-drug interactions in healthy volunteers.
