Background:Interventional trials in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)sufer from the heterogeneity of the disease as it considerably reduces statistical *** asked if blood neuroflament light chains(NfL)could be used to antici‑pate disease progression and increase trial ***:In 125 patients with ALS from three independent prospective studies-one observational study and two interventional trials-we developed and externally validated a multivariate linear model for predicting disease pro‑gression,measured by the monthly decrease of the ALS Functional Rating Scale Revised(ALSFRS-R)*** trained the prediction model in the observational study and tested the predictive value of the following parameters assessed at diagnosis:NfL levels,sex,age,site of onset,body mass index,disease duration,ALSFRS-R score,and monthly ALSFRS-R score decrease since disease *** then applied the resulting model in the other two study cohorts to assess the actual utility for interventional *** analyzed the impact on trial power in mixed-efects models and compared the performance of the NfL model with two currently used predictive approaches,which anticipate disease progression using the ALSFRS-R decrease during a three-month observational period(lead-in)or since disease onset(ΔFRS).Results:Among the parameters provided,the NfL levels(Pction with site of onset(Pcontributed signifcantly to the prediction,forming a robust NfL prediction model(R=0.67).Model application in the trial cohorts confrmed its applicability and revealed superiority over lead-in andΔFRS-based *** NfL model improved statistical power by 61%and 22%(95%confdence intervals:54%-66%,7%-29%).conclusion:The use of the NfL-based prediction model to compensate for clinical heterogeneity in ALS could signif‑cantly increase the trial ***00868166,registered March23,2009;NcT02306590,registered December 2,2014.

A study of the surface assisted self-assembly of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene （TcNB） acceptor molecules and Fe atoms on an Au（111） surface is presented. While conditions to get the two-dimensional arrays of stable Fe（TcNB）4 complexes are clearly identified, ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy （STM/STS） coupled with first-principles calculations reveals that situations may occur where Fe and TcNB survive on the surface （as Fe-4TcNB entities） at a higher density than the original molecular monolayer without forming coordination bonds with each other. It is found that the square planar coordination of the Fe（TcNB）4 monomer complexes cannot fully develop in the presence of lateral strain due to growth-induced confinement. A phenomenon similar to steric hindrance involving a strongly modified chirality with a Fe-N-c bond angle of 120° compared to the 180° for the stable complex may then explain why the Fe atom keeps its metallic bond with the surface. The competition between steric and electronic effects, not reported before, may arise elsewhere in surface chemistry involved in the synthesis of new and potentially useful organic nanomaterials.

Analyzing biases of nitrogen contents and δ^(15)N values arising from acidified marine sediments with different cacO_3 concentrations

In some studies, the researchers pretreated and measured organic carbon, nitrogen and their isotopes（δ^（13）c and δ^（15）N） of marine sediment together, to save costs and resources of analysis. However, the procedure of acidification to remove inorganic carbon for analysing δ^（13）c can affect the values of nitrogen and δ^（15）N, and the biases vary a lot depending on the cacO_3 contents of sediments. In this study, the biases of total nitrogen（TN）and δ^（15）N values arising from acidified sediments were compared between the cacO_3-poor（1%–16%） and cacO_3-rich（20%–40%） samples. TN and δ^（15）N values were altered during acid treatment（without centrifugation） that possibly led to N-containing compounds volatilization. For cacO_3-poor samples, acidification led to a range of 0%–40% TN losses and 0‰–2‰ shift in δ^（15）N values; and 10%–60% TN losses and 1‰–14‰ shift in δ^（15）N values for cacO_3-rich samples. The biases from most samples exceeded the precision of the instrument（0.002% for TN and 0.08‰ for δ^（15）N）, and high biases could mislead our judgment for the environmental implication of the data. Thus,avoiding co-analysis of organic carbon, nitrogen and their isotopes（δ^（13）c and δ^（15）N） in sediments, even for cacO_3-poor marine sediments, is necessary.

Versican belongs to the family of the large aggregating chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans located primarily within theextracellular matrix (EcM). Versican, like other members of its family, has unique N- and c-terminal globular regions,each with multiple motifs. A large glycosaminoglycan-binding region lies between them. This review will begin byoutlining these structures, in the context of EcM proteoglycans. The diverse binding partners afforded to versican byvirtue of its modular design will then be examined. These include EcM components, such as hyaluronan, type Icollagen, tenascin-R, fibulin-1, and -2, fibrillin-1, fibronectin, P- and L-selectins, and chemokines. Versican also binds tothe cell surface proteins cD44, integrin β1, epidermal growth factor receptor, and P-selectin glycoprotein *** multiple interactors play important roles in cell behaviour, and the roles of versican in modulating such processesare discussed.

Natal dispersal, the movement of an organism from its birthplace to the site of first reproduction, is fundamental to many ecological and evolutionary processes. Mechanistically, individual dispersal decisions can depend on both individual phe- notype and environmental cues. In particular, many established evolutionary theories of dispersal highlight the importance of the social environment. More recent research in behavioral ecology has focused on the importance of individual behavioral pheno- types. We reviewed the literature on individual behavioral phenotypes and dispersal and suggest that how individual behavioral phenotypes interact with the immediate social environment experienced by individuals in influencing dispersal is still poorly un- derstood, despite growing interest. We found that very few studies had examined the interaction of individual behavioral pheno- types and social factors, and behavioral phenotypes related to social tendencies were less commonly measured than were beha- vioral phenotypes related to exploration or response to risk. Further, and unsurprisingly, studies on social behavioral phenotypes and dispersal behaviors during the transience stage of dispersal were underrepresented compared to the departure or settlement stages. Future studies in this area should aim to＂ a） make explicit links between behavioral traits and their proposed effects on dispersal decisions throughout multiple stages of dispersal, b） integrate more continuous dispersal variables, and c） consider the effects of the spatial distribution and phenotypes of conspecifics （i.e., the social landscape） encountered by individual dispersers

Nanoclusters(Ncs)have been demonstrated of outstanding performance in electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies due to their strong quantum confinement effects and strong interaction with ***,we developed a class of ultrafine metal-oxide(MOx,M=Fe,co and Ni)Ncs incorporated with iron phthalocyanine(FePc),MOx/FePc-G,supported on graphene as high-performance catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),oxygen evolution reaction(OER),and carbon dioxide reduction(cO2RR).The high activities for ORR and OER are attributed to the electron donation and accepting ability of the highly redox active of FePc-G that could tune the properties of *** FeOx/FePc-G exhibits an extremely positive half-wave potential(E1/2)of 0.888 and 0.610 V for ORR in alkaline and neutral conditions,respectively,which is around 60 mV more positive than that of Pt/*** NiOx/FePc-G shows similar OER activity with the state-of-the-art catalysts,Ir/c,and better performance than NiFeO Ncs supported on ***,the coOx/FePc-G and NiOx/FePc-G show high activity and selectivity to reduce cO2 into cO with a low onset potential of-0.22 V(overpotential is 0.11 V).

Three new cyanido-bridged heterometallic Re~ⅣNi~Ⅱ and Re~Ⅳcu~Ⅱone-dimensional systems were synthesized and extensively characterized both structurally and magnetically. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that these compounds display a common topology, with chains composed of alternating [Re~Ⅳcl4(cN)2]and [M~Ⅱ(cyclam)](M = Ni in 1, cu in 2) or [cu~Ⅱ(N,N′-dimethylcyclam)](in 3) building units. Two different chain orientations with a tilt angle of ca. 51° to 55° are present in the crystal packing of these compounds. The magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest the presence of intrachain ferromagnetic interactions between the S = 3/2 Re~Ⅳcenters and the 3d metal ions: S = 1 Ni~Ⅱ or S = 1/2 cu~Ⅱ. At low temperature, a three-dimensional ordered magnetic phase induced by interchain antiferromagnetic interactions (antiferromagnetic for 1 and 2; canted antiferromagnetic for 3) is detected for the three compounds.

Gold-bearing quartz veins of the Taihua Group consisting of Archean metavolcanic rocks are a main gold deposit type in the Xiao Qinling area,one of the three biggest gold production areas in *** quartz veins experienced strong alteration characterized by a typical mesothermal hydrothermal altered mineral *** grade of gold is affected by the contents of sulphides,***,pyrite and *** of minor elements analysis for the of gold-bearing quartz veins indicate higher contents of Au and high contents of Ag,Pb,cu,cd,W,and *** fluid inclusions were found in the gold-bearing quartz *** types of fluid inclusions were identified:(1) aqueous inclusions;(2) cO 2-bearing inclusions;and(3) daughter crystal-bearing fluid *** temperatures ranged from 110 to 670℃ with low and high peaks appearing at 160 180℃ and 280 300℃,*** salinity of aqueous inclusions varies between 1.8 wt% and 38.2 wt% *** homogenization temperature and salinity show a positive *** H and O isotopes of fluid inclusions in the gold-bearing quartz veins indicate that magmatic solution and metamorphic hydrothermal solution,together with meteoric water,were involved in the formation of gold-bearing *** magma activities related to granite intrusions should be the main source of cO 2 fluid with higher temperature and salinity.

In Europe,tropospheric ozone pollution appears as a major air quality issue,and ozone concentrations remain potentially harmful to *** this study we compared the trends of two ozone metrics widely used for forests protection in Europe,the AOT40(Accumulated Ozone over Threshold of 40 ppb)which only depends on surface air ozone concentrations,and the Phytotoxic Ozone Dose which is the accumulated ozone uptake through stomata over the growing season,and above a threshold Y of uptake(PODY).By using a chemistry transport model,we found that European-averaged ground-level ozone concentrations(−2%)and AOT40 metric(−26.5%)significantly declined from 2000 to 2014,due to successful control strategies to reduce the emission of ozone precursors in Europe since the early *** contrast,the stomatal ozone uptake by forests increased from 17.5 to 26.6 mmol O3 m^(−2)despite the reduction in ozone concentrations,leading to an increase of potential ozone damage on plants in *** a climate change context,a biologically-sound stomatal flux-based standard(PODY)as new European legislative standard is needed.
