The study aimed to determine the effect of seeds size (length, width, thickness and 100 seeds-weight) on their phytochemical composition (total phenolics, total flavonoids, total proteins, soluble sugars and starch) of cowpea accessions (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) grown in Burkina Faso. The genotypes and their descendants had length, width, thickness and 100 seeds weight between 80 ± 0.7 to 7.40 ± 0.46 cm;6.51 ± 0.41 to 5.76 ± 0.46 cm;5.15 ± 0.37 to 4.22 ± 0.22 cm;12.93 ± 0.09 to 20.16 ± 0.39 g respectively. Total phenol, total flavonoid and starch contents ranged from 585.37 ± 9.73 to 1704.71 ± 4.87 mg GAE per 100 g DW;41.42 ± 2.03 to 52.26 ± 0.75 mg QE per 100 g DW;6.45% ± 0.3% to 46.58% ± 0.12% respectively. The soluble sugars and total proteins contents were ranged respectively from 149.33 ± 3.80 to 432.82 ± 40.81 μg/100mg, and 20.28 ± 0.17 to 27.32 ± 0.17 (%). Seeds size characters had significant and positive correlations with starch content, and significant and negative correlations with total phenolic content. The study of the genetic parameters of phytochemical traits also revealed that they are slightly influenced by the environment. Genetic factors are believed to account for the variation in the observed seed traits, which provides a high potential of studied accessions for breeding programs.

About 80% of cowpea seeds are lost along with 30% of their weight after six months of unprotected storage due to attacks by Callosobruchus maculatus. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of applying bioinsecticides on the biological parameters of C. maculatus to reduce its damage to cowpea stocks. Four treatments including an untreated control and three doses of powdery extracts of C. nigricans, Z. zanthoxyloides and H. suaveolens, were compared in a Fischer block with four completely randomized repetitions. One hundred undamaged cowpea seeds were mixed with doses of each extract in Petri dishes and then fed as food substrates to ten pairs of C. maculatus for eight days. The extracts of H. suaveolens, C. nigricans and Z. zanthoxyloides all contain active ingredients including polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and alkaloids, etc. The extract of Z. zanthoxyloides was found to be more active on adults (100.00% mortality) followed by C. nigricans (98.75% mortality) and H. suaveolens (97.50% mortality) at 80 mg/g. Fecundity per female decreased significantly in the treated batches of 13.82 eggs for H. suaveolens at 10.12 eggs for C. nigricans at a dose of 80 mg/g. Germination rate of seeds was statistically raised to 100% at 60 and 80 mg/g by C. nigricans powder and lowered to 83.00% at 20 mg/g by Z. zanthoxyloides extracts. The application of Z. zanthoxyloides extract would be a less expensive alternative for the sustainable management of C. maculatus in cowpea stocks.

Parasitic nematodes have been reported as one of the major constraints to soybean production worldwide. The majority of nematodes are so-called “free-living” and feed mainly on bacteria, fungi, protozoa and other nematodes. In Burkina Faso, the presence of parasitic nematodes has been reported in crops such as rice and sorghum. The objective of this study was to identify the genera and species of nematodes associated with soybean production in Burkina Faso. Investigations were carried out on 24 genotypes of a medium-maturity group of soybean at the Farako-Ba research station. Soil samples were taken from the trial soil before its installation. At harvest, soil samples with roots were taken from each genotype in the elementary plots. The composite sample is represented by 4 lots of soil samples with roots. Extractions and counts of nematodes were performed on the different lots. In total, 7 genera of plant-parasitic nematodes associated with soybean were identified. Among these genera, Pratylenchus (100% of infected genotypes), Helicotylenchus (97.28%) and Scutellonema (94.44%) were the most prevalent in terms of frequency and abundance. Some soybean genotypes were less susceptible to the genus Pratylenchus is known to be highly pathogenic in soybean. These were mainly the genotypes TGX2025-10E, TGX2023-3E and TGX2025-14E.

Background: Tropical forests play a fundamental role in the provision of diverse ecosystem services, such as biodiversity,climate and air quality regulation, freshwater provision, carbon cycling, agricultural support and culture. To understand the role of forests in the carbon balance, aboveground biomass(AGB) estimates are needed. Given the importance of Brazilian tropical forests, there is an urgent need to improve AGB estimates to support the Brazilian commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC). Many AGB maps and datasets exist, varying in availability, scale and coverage. Thus, stakeholders, policy makers and scientists must decide which AGB product, dataset or combination of data to use for their particular goals. In this study, we assessed the gaps in the spatial AGB data across the Brazilian Amazon forests not only to orient the decision makers about the data that are currently available but also to provide a guide for future ***: We obtained a map of the gaps in the forest AGB spatial data for the Brazilian Amazon using statistics and differences between AGB maps and a spatial multicriteria evaluation that considered the current AGB datasets. The AGB spatial data gap map represents areas with good coverage of AGB data and, consequently, the main gaps or priority areas where further biomass assessments should focus, including the northeast of Amazon State, Amapá and northeast of Pará. An experimental method for a single layer is extended to determine the elastic properties of nanostructured W/C u multilayers on a flexible *** strain difference between the W/Cu-polyimide-W/Cu composite and the uncoated substrate,measured by dual digital image correlation,allows us to extract the effective Young's modulus of W/Cu multilayers(20 periods)equaling 216±13 *** element method is then performed,which agrees well with the experiment and classical rule of mixture(ROM)theory demonstrating that the extension to multilayers is effective and *** numerical analysis also interestingly shows that the strain difference is linearly related to the thickness ratio(W/Cu),periods and sublayer thickness,*** contrast to ROM theory,this approach could potentially be used for the evaluation of properties and design of emerging/unknown functional multilayers,whether or not they are crystalline or amorphous.

We present a phenomenological study of CO（1-0） and CO（2-1） emission from the circumstellar envelope （CSE） of the Asymptotic Giant Branch （AGB） star RS Cnc. It reveals departures from central symmetry that turn out to be efficient tools for the exploration of some of the properties of the CSE. We use a wind model including a bipolar flow with a typical wind velocity of ～8 km s^-1 that decreases to ～2 km s^-1 near the equator. This wind model is used to describe Doppler velocity spectral maps obtained by merging data collected at the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer and Pico Veleta single dish radio telescope. Parameters describing the wind morphology and kinematics are obtained, together with the radial dependence of the gas temperature in the domain of the CSE probed by the CO observations. Significant north-south central asymmetries are revealed by the analysis, which we quantify using a simple phenomenological description. The origin of such asymmetries is unclear.

Exposure to diesel engine exhaust(DE) is a major concern in underground mines. It has been linked to cardiopulmonary diseases and is classified as a human carcinogen. The goal of this study is to assess DE exposures in workers at two underground gold mines, to compare exposure levels within and between the mines, and to compare different methods of measuring DE exposures, namely respirable combustible dust(RCD), elemental carbon(EC) and total carbon(TC). Ambient and personal breathing zone(PBZ) measurements were taken. Side-by-side monitoring of RCD and of the respirable fraction of EC and TC(EC_Rand TC_R) was carried out in the workers' breathing zone during full-shift *** ambient measurements, in addition to EC_R, TC_Rand RCD, a submicron aerosol fraction(less than 1 mm) of EC and TC was also sampled(EC_1and TC_1). Average ambient results of 240 mg/m^3 in RCD, 150 mg/m^3 in EC_Rand 210 mg/m^3 in TC_Rare obtained. Average PBZ results of 190 mg/m^3 in RCD,84 mg/m^3 in EC3Rand 150 mg/min TC_Rare obtained. Very good correlation is found between EC_Rand EC_1 with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.99(p < 0.01) calculated between the two logtransformed concentrations. No differences are reported between EC_Rand EC_1, nor between TC_Rand TC_1, since ratios are equal to 1.04, close to 1, in both cases. Highest exposures are reported for loadhaul-dump(LHD) and jumbo drill operators and conventional miners. Significant exposure differences are reported between mines for truck and LHD operators(p < 0.01). The average TC_R/EC_Rratio is 1.6 for PBZ results, and 1.3 for ambient results. The variability observed in the TC_R/EC_Rratio shows that interferences from non-diesel related organic carbon can skew the interpretation of results when relying only on TC data.

Dear Editor,High-flow priapism is a persistent erection,usually caused by blunt perineal trauma,resulting in pathologically increased arterial inflow to the corpora cavernosa[1].The therapeutic strategy of high-flow priapism,although codified,leaves room for a wide choice of techniques,ranging from conservative management,selective arterial embolization to surgical management[2].The aim of this letter was to report an alternative approach of percutaneous embolization by direct puncture for the treatment of high-flow priapism.

The thought of exploring a possible relationship between the broad systems of steroid hormone physiology (specifically vitamin D and testosterone) and nocioception was prompted by an unexpectedly frequent personal clinical observation. Patients with chronic pain syndromes or chronic musculoskeletal pain often have low serum levels of vitamin D and testos-terone. Mining for relevant information in Pub Med, Medline and Cochrane Systems Review, three concepts repeatedly emerge that provide a common context for understanding the mechanics of these diverse sys-tems—epigenetic, homeostasis and neuroplasticity. Viewing homeostasis within the framework of epigenetics allows reasoned speculation as to how various human systems interact to maintain integrity and function, while simultaneously responding in a plastic manner to external stimuli. Cell signaling supports normal function by regulating synaptic activity, but can also effect plastic change in the central and peripheral nervous system. This is most commonly achieved by post-translational remodeling of chromatin. There is thus persistent epigenetic change in protein synthesis with all the related downstream effects but without disruption of normal DNA se-quencing. In itself, this may be considered an example of genomic homeo-stasis. Epigenetic mechanisms in nociception and analgesia are active in the paleospinothalamic and neospinothalamic tracts at all levels. Physiologic response to a nociceptive insult, whether mechanical, inflammatory or ischemic, is provided by cell signaling that is significantly enhanced through epigenetic mechanisms at work in nociceptors, Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) and glutamate receptors, voltage gated receptors, higher order neurons in the various dorsal horn laminae and proximal nociceptive pro-cessing centers in the brainstem and cortex.
