In this paper, a new method to address the scheduling problem of a renewable energy community while considering network constraints and users' privacy preservation is proposed. The method decouples the optimization solution into two interacting procedures: conic projection(CP) and linear programming(LP) optimization. A new optimal CP method is proposed based on local computations and on the calculation of the roots of a fourth-order polynomial for which a closed-form solution is known. Computational tests conducted on both 14-bus and 84-bus distribution networks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in obtaining the same quality of solutions compared with that by a centralized solver. The proposed method is scalable and has features that can be implemented on microcontrollers since both LP and CP procedures require only simple matrix-vector multiplications.

A novel non-linear stochastic method based on a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming(MILP)optimization model is proposed to optimally manage a high number of photovoltaic(PV)-battery systems for the provision of up and down regulation in the ancillary services market.This method,considers both the technical constraints of the power system,and those of the equipment used by all the prosumers.This allows an aggregator of many residential prosumers endowed with photovoltaic(PV)-battery systems to evaluate the baseline of the aggregate by minimizing the costs related to the electrical energy absorbed from the grid and then to assess the up and down flexibility curves with relative offer prices.As confirmed by simulation results carried out considering different realistic case studies,the method can effectively be used by an aggregator to evaluate the economic impact of its participation in the ancillary services market,both for the aggregator and for its prosumers.

To provide flexibility for the operation of smart electricity networks,a large number of scattered demand response resources are managed by a demand response aggregator(DRA).Increasing the economic viability of this new entity,i.e.,DRA,has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years.Following this direction,this paper proposes stochastic model of multiple large-scale energy storage system(LESS)investments from the perspective of a DRA.A LESS directly connects to smart distribution networks and provides the possibility to save energy costs and thereafter increase the energy efficiency of the DRA.In this paper,a novel mixed-integer model is proposed to determine the optimal capacity and operation of a LESS in coordination with a DR scheme.The model,as a main contribution to literature,comprises novel managerial options,such as the number of allowed DR actions,the number of allowed charging and discharging.Moreover,the model is designed to be capable enough to exclude the hours in which the demand side is not allowed to participate in DR.The proposed model is tested through a numerical example with various case studies.The simulation results show the substantial economic impacts of considering the introduced managerial options in the coordination of a LESS operation with DR.

Battery energy storage technologies have witnessed both dramatic cost reduction and technical evolution in recent years. This is leading to widespread deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) worldwide, particularly to support operation of power grids with already deep penetration of renewables. Considering the development of new battery technologies with different power-to-energy ratios and for various engineering applications, BESSs could play a strategic role towards a net-zero energy future. New opportunities are emerging for BESSs to participate in several markets, provide different grid services, and perform "value stacking", eventually allowing development of new business cases and improved BESS economics. BESS configurations that are "behind the meter", "in front of the meter", hybrid plants co-located with renewables, and so forth, are only some of the exciting propositions that are being seen in different countries and at different scales, from highly distributed (virtual power plants), to neighbourhood-level (community batteries), to utility scale.

Climate change is threatening natural ecosystems in the Earth, and arid regions of southern Africa are particularly exposed to further drying. Welwitschia mirabilis Hook. （Welwitschiaceae） is an unusual gymnosperm tree that is recognized as an icon of the Namib Desert, southern Africa. Many aspects of its biology were investigated in the past, with a special emphasis for its physiology and adaptations, but nothing is known about its potential sensitivity to current climate changes. In this study, we adopted an approach based on distribution data for W. mirabilis and ecological niche models for clarifying the species-climate interactions and for predicting the potential impacts of climate change on W. mirabilis populations in three well-separated sub-ranges （northern, southern and central） in northwestern Namibia, southern Africa. We evidenced that the populations occurring in the northern sub-range have peculiar climatic exigencies compared with those in the central and southern sub-ranges and are particularly exposed to the impact of climate change, which will consist of a substantial increase in temperature across the region. These impacts could be represented by demographic changes that should be detected and monitored detailedly to plan efficient measures for managing populations of this important species on the long-term scale.

Geometry-based graphical methods for solar control in architecture:A digital framework

The form of a building is among the most critical design aspects concerning building energy consumption.Form-based passive design strategies,like solar control,can significantly reduce heating and cooling demands if implemented early in the design process.In this sense,there is an evident need for tools that can adequately support designers in their decisions.This paper aims to illustrate how geometry-based graphical methods(GGM)can provide effective support in the conceptual design stage.The paper introduces a novel digital framework for designing and analysing shading devices that leverages geometrical models and graphical methods.The digital implementation of GGM allows extending their applicability to threedimensional and non-planar geometries.A comprehensive review of existing methods and tools for the design of shading devices lays the ground for the proposed digital framework,which is then demonstrated through two case studies.The results show that the diagrammatic nature of GGM facilitates a better and more direct understanding of the relationship between form and performance.

Demand response creates an opportunity for consumers to play an important role in the development of smart grids.With the advent of renewable energies and their uncertainties,demand response provides a possible solution to resolve these uncertainties.In addition to demand response schemes in the presence of renewable energy,the personality types of consumers can influence the choice of tariffs and change their electricity costs.In this paper,first,household residents with different types of personalities are considered as energy consumers.Secondly,the uncertainty of renewable energy sources is considered for the distributed generations scheduling by using a stochastic method called the Here-and-Now approach and considering three tariffs,time of use,real-time pricing,and direct load control in the residential sector to reduce total costs.Finally,the tariff choice is compared based on people preferences via various personality types,the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test,and simulations results.Also,a probabilistic unit commitment methodology is used for distributed generations scheduling to minimize the total cost.The financial losses caused by non-optimal tariffs selection are determined through the comparison of tariffs.Simulation results show that time of use and direct load control tariffs are optimal ones in summer and winter seasons,respectively.

Community batteries (CBs) are emerging to support and even enable energy communities and generally help consumers, especially space-constrained ones, to access potential techno-economic benefits from storage and support local grid decarbonization. However, the economic viability of CB projects is often uncertain. In this regard, typical feasibility studies assess CB value for behind-the-meter (BTM) operation or whole-sale market participation, i.e., front-of-meter (FOM). This work proposes a novel techno-economic operational framework that allows systematic assessment of the different options and introduces a two-meter architecture that co-optimizes both BTM and FOM benefits. A real CB project application in Australia is used to demonstrate the significant two-meter co-optimization opportunities that could enhance the business case of CB and energy communities by multi-service provision and value stacking.

Functional Design for Customizing Sit-To-Stand Assisting Devices

Standing up refers to the transition from the seating to the standing postures to perform a movement that involves several body segments and requires both voluntary action and equilibrium control during an important displacement of the body Centre of Gravity （COG）. This task can be considered very important for people with reduced mobility to achieve minimal independence in Activity of Daily Living （ADL）. In this paper, we propose solutions for the homecare of persons with reduced mobility, describing a functional design to customize assisting devices for the Sit-to-Stand （STS）. In particular, the support mechanism that generates the requested motion and sustains the body of a person can be synthesized ad-hoc according to the experimental data of the subject. Experimental tests carried out during the Sit-To-Stand are used to track and record point trajectories and the orientation of the trunk of an individual, and they are used to design a 1-DOF mechanism able to reproduce the assigned rigid-body motion. A four-bar linkage has been synthesized according to the desired features. Simulation results are reported to illustrate the engineering soundness of the proposed mechatronic solution.
