Effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness:A multi-country cluster randomized controlled trial

Purpose:To examine the effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in children aged 7-8 ***:Twenty schools in 5 different European countries(2 second-grade classrooms per school)participated in a cluster randomized controlled trial(Sport at School trial).Participants were assigned to either a control group,which continued with their habitual physical education lessons,or to an intervention group,which replaced these lessons with a 1-year karate intervention(Karate Mind and Movement program).A total of 721 children(344 girls and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 years old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 were assigned to the control group and intervention group,*** included academic performance(average grade),psychosocial functioning(Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for parents),and different markers of physical fitness(cardiorespiratory fitness,balance,and flexibility).Results:The intervention provided small but significant benefits compared to the control group for academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct problems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),cardiorespiratory fitness(d=0.36;p0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year school-based karate intervention was effective in improving academic achievement,conduct problems,and physical fitness in primary school *** results support the inclusion of karate during physical education lessons.

Potential impacts of climate change on Welwitschia mirabilis populations in the Namib Desert,southern Africa

Climate change is threatening natural ecosystems in the Earth, and arid regions of southern Africa are particularly exposed to further drying. Welwitschia mirabilis Hook. （Welwitschiaceae） is an unusual gymnosperm tree that is recognized as an icon of the Namib Desert, southern Africa. Many aspects of its biology were investigated in the past, with a special emphasis for its physiology and adaptations, but nothing is known about its potential sensitivity to current climate changes. In this study, we adopted an approach based on distribution data for W. mirabilis and ecological niche models for clarifying the species-climate interactions and for predicting the potential impacts of climate change on W. mirabilis populations in three well-separated sub-ranges （northern, southern and central） in northwestern Namibia, southern Africa. We evidenced that the populations occurring in the northern sub-range have peculiar climatic exigencies compared with those in the central and southern sub-ranges and are particularly exposed to the impact of climate change, which will consist of a substantial increase in temperature across the region. These impacts could be represented by demographic changes that should be detected and monitored detailedly to plan efficient measures for managing populations of this important species on the long-term scale.

A novel non-linear stochastic method based on a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming(MILP)optimization model is proposed to optimally manage a high number of photovoltaic(PV)-battery systems for the provision of up and down regulation in the ancillary services *** method,considers both the technical constraints of the power system,and those of the equipment used by all the *** allows an aggregator of many residential prosumers endowed with photovoltaic(PV)-battery systems to evaluate the baseline of the aggregate by minimizing the costs related to the electrical energy absorbed from the grid and then to assess the up and down flexibility curves with relative offer *** confirmed by simulation results carried out considering different realistic case studies,the method can effectively be used by an aggregator to evaluate the economic impact of its participation in the ancillary services market,both for the aggregator and for its prosumers.

Functional Design for Customizing Sit-To-Stand Assisting Devices

Standing up refers to the transition from the seating to the standing postures to perform a movement that involves several body segments and requires both voluntary action and equilibrium control during an important displacement of the body Centre of Gravity （COG）. This task can be considered very important for people with reduced mobility to achieve minimal independence in Activity of Daily Living （ADL）. In this paper, we propose solutions for the homecare of persons with reduced mobility, describing a functional design to customize assisting devices for the Sit-to-Stand （STS）. In particular, the support mechanism that generates the requested motion and sustains the body of a person can be synthesized ad-hoc according to the experimental data of the subject. Experimental tests carried out during the Sit-To-Stand are used to track and record point trajectories and the orientation of the trunk of an individual, and they are used to design a 1-DOF mechanism able to reproduce the assigned rigid-body motion. A four-bar linkage has been synthesized according to the desired features. Simulation results are reported to illustrate the engineering soundness of the proposed mechatronic solution.

Scalable Distributed Optimization Combining Conic Projection and Linear Programming for Energy Community Scheduling

In this paper, a new method to address the scheduling problem of a renewable energy community while considering network constraints and users' privacy preservation is proposed. The method decouples the optimization solution into two interacting procedures: conic projection(CP) and linear programming(LP) optimization. A new optimal CP method is proposed based on local computations and on the calculation of the roots of a fourth-order polynomial for which a closed-form solution is known. Computational tests conducted on both 14-bus and 84-bus distribution networks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in obtaining the same quality of solutions compared with that by a centralized solver. The proposed method is scalable and has features that can be implemented on microcontrollers since both LP and CP procedures require only simple matrix-vector multiplications.

Resilence Control of DC Microgrid Integrated with Multi-Nanogrids Considering Connected-Islanded States

In this paper, a DC microgrid (DCMG) integrated with a set of nano-grids (NG) is studied. DCMG exchanges predetermined active and reactive power with the upstream network. DCMG and NGs are coordinately controlled and managed in such a way the exchanged P-Q power with external grid are kept on scheduled level following all events and operating conditions. The proposed control system, in addition to the ability of mutual support between DCMG and NGs, makes NGs support each other in critical situations. On the other hand, in all operating conditions, DCMG not only feeds three-phase loads with time-varying active and reactive power on the grid side but also injects constant active power into the grid. During events, NGs support each other, NGs support DCMG, and DCMG supports NGs. Such control strategies are realized by the proposed control method to increase resilience of the system. For these purposes, all resources and loads in DCMG and NGs are equipped with individual controllers. Then, a central control unit analyzes, monitors, and regularizes performance of individual controllers in DCMG and NGs. Nonlinear simulations show the proposed model can effectively control DCMG and NGs under normal and critical conditions.

To provide flexibility for the operation of smart electricity networks,a large number of scattered demand response resources are managed by a demand response aggregator(DRA).Increasing the economic viability of this new entity,i.e.,DRA,has attracted a great deal of attention in recent *** this direction,this paper proposes stochastic model of multiple large-scale energy storage system(LESS)investments from the perspective of a DRA.A LESS directly connects to smart distribution networks and provides the possibility to save energy costs and thereafter increase the energy efficiency of the *** this paper,a novel mixed-integer model is proposed to determine the optimal capacity and operation of a LESS in coordination with a DR *** model,as a main contribution to literature,comprises novel managerial options,such as the number of allowed DR actions,the number of allowed charging and ***,the model is designed to be capable enough to exclude the hours in which the demand side is not allowed to participate in *** proposed model is tested through a numerical example with various case *** simulation results show the substantial economic impacts of considering the introduced managerial options in the coordination of a LESS operation with DR.

A Procedure for the Design of Novel Assisting Devices for the Sit-to-Stand

The Sit-to-Stand （STS） is an activity most people perform numerous times daily. Standing up deals with the transition from two stabilized postures, namely seated to standing, with movement of all body segments except the feet. During the STS the body＇s Center of Gravity （COG） is moved upward from a sitting position to a standing position without losing balance and requiring a good coordination of many muscles. Three main phases of the STS movement can be recognized. One begins to stand up by inclining the upper body forward, which moves body mass toward the feet in order to maintain balance after lift-off. Prior to leaving the chair, hip and knee extensor muscles are activated to provide antigravity support for these joints, this action is commonly referred to as ＂weight shift＂. Finally; after leaving the chair, the leg and trunk joints are straightened to achieve upright stance. The STS task can be considered of major importance for impaired and elderly people to achieve minimal mo- bility and independence. In this paper we detail a procedure for the design of assisting devices to be used for the STS. In par- ticular, an experimental procedure is described firstly to track and record point trajectories and the orientation of the trunk during the STS. This analysis is then used to get information for the design of assisting devices. A proposal and simulation results are presented for a novel mechatronic system. In particular, for the case under study experimental tests are used to drive the actua- tion system for the reported simulation. A functional mechatronic scheme is then proposed to control the device during its operation.

Stability of Nonlinear Differential-Algebraic Systems Via Additive Identity

The stability analysis for nonlinear differentialalgebraic systems is addressed using tools from classical control theory. Sufficient stability conditions relying on matrix inequalities are established via Lyapunov Direct Method. In addition, a novel interpretation of differential-algebraic systems as feedback interconnection of a purely differential system and an algebraic system allows reducing the stability analysis to a smallgain-like condition. The study of stability properties for constrained mechanical systems, for a class of Lipschitz differential-algebraic systems and for an academic example is used to illustrate the theory.
