The worldwide prevalence of hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection in children is 0.05%-0.4% in developed countries and 2%-5% in resource-limited settings, where inadequately tested blood products or un-sterile medical injections still remain important routes of infection. After the screening of blood donors, motherto-child transmission(MTCT) of HCV has become the leading cause of pediatric infection, at a rate of 5%. Maternal HIV co-infection is a significant risk factor for MTCT and anti-HIV therapy during pregnancy seemingly can reduce the transmission rate of both viruses. Conversely, a high maternal viral load is an important, but not preventable risk factor, because at present no anti-HCV treatment can be administered to pregnant women to block viral replication. Caution is needed in adopting obstetric procedures, such as amniocentesis or internal fetal monitoring, that can favor fetal exposure to HCV contaminated maternal blood, though evidence is lacking on the real risk of single obstetric practices. Mode of delivery and type of feeding do not represent significant risk factors for MTCT. Therefore, there is no reason to offer elective caesarean section or discourage breast-feeding to HCV infected parturients. Information on the natural history of vertical HCV infection is limited. The primary infection is asymptomatic in infants. At least one quarter of infected children shows a spontaneous viral clearance(SVC) that usually occurs within 6 years of life. IL-28 B polymorphims and genotype 3 infection have been associated with greater chances of SVC. In general, HCV progression is mild or moderate in children with chronic infection who grow regularly, though cases with marked liver fibrosis or hepatic failure have been described. Non-organ specific autoantibodies and cryoglobulins are frequently found in children with chronic infection, but autoimmune diseases or HCV associated extrahepatic manifestations are rare.

Gli Autori, in base allo studio di circa 1500 esemplari di specie del genere Antroherpon,forniscono dati corologici su 47 specie e sottospecie appartenenti a questo geuere, con commenti sulladistribuzioue di alcuni taxa e a note sinoimiche sulle grotte di provenienza. Viene inoltre confermata,in base allo studio dell’edeago, la validità specifica di A. subalpinum Jeaunel e sono descritte le seguentispecie e sottospecie nuove: A. brckoensis n. sp., A. elongatum n. sp., A. scutariensis n. sp., A. hoerman-ni hoffmanni n. ssp. e A. scutulatum n. sp. Viene inoltre proposta una sintesi delle attuali conoscenze zoogeografiche sul genere Antroherpon. On the genus Antroherpon Reitter (Coleoptera, Cholevidae, Leptodirinae). Data on thedistribution of 47 species and subspecies of the genus Antroherpon, based on the study of about 1,500specimens, are given. Synonymies data on the cave’s names are given also. A. subalpinus Jeannel asa good species is proving, and the following new species and subspecies are described: A. brckoensisn. sp., A. elongatum n. sp., A. scutariensis n. sp., A. hoermanni hoffmanni n. ssp. and A. scutulatum n. sp. Some zoogeographical notes on the genus Antroherpon are also given.

Reference Genes for RT-qPCR Analysis of environmentally and Developmentally Regulated Gene expression in Alfalfa

Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is a highly sensitive technique that has become the standard for the analysis of differences in gene expression in response to experimental treatments or among genetic sources. The accuracy of the RT-qPCR results can be significantly affected by uncontrolled sources of variation that can be accounted for normalization with so-called reference genes stably expressed under various conditions. In this study we assessed the stability of 21 reference gene candidates in crowns of two alfalfa cultivars (Apica and evolution) exposed to various environmental conditions (cold, water stress and photoperiod) and from above ground biomass of the cultivar Orca sampled at three developmental stages (vegetative, full bloom and mature pods). Candidates were selected based on their previous identification in other plant species or their stable expression in a differential hybridization of alfalfa eSTs with cDNA from non-acclimated and cold-acclimated alfalfa. Genes encoding ubiquitin protein ligase 2a (UBL-2a), actin depolymerizing factor (ADF) and retention in endoplasmic reticulum 1 protein (Rer1) were the most stable across experimental conditions. Conversely β-actin (Act), α-tubulin (Tub) and glyce-raldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) frequently used as “housekeeping genes” in gene expression studies showed poor stability. No more than two reference genes were required to normalize the gene expression data under each condition. Normalization of the expression of genes of interest with unstable reference genes led to observations that were conflicting with those made with validated reference genes and that were in some cases inconsistent with the current knowledge of the trait. The reference genes identified in this study are strong candidates for normalization of gene expression in cultivated alfalfa.

Glioblastoma multiforme （GBM） is the most common adult primary tumor of the cen- tral nervous system. The current standard of care for glioblastoma patients involves a combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy with the alkylating agent temozolomide. Several mech- anisms underlying the inherent and acquired temozolomide resistance have been identified and con- tribute to treatment failure. early identification of temozolomide-resistant GBM patients and improvement of the therapeutic strategies available to treat this malignancy are of uttermost impor- tance. This review initially looks at the molecular pathways underlying GBM formation and devel- opment with a particular emphasis placed on recent therapeutic advances made in the field. Our focus will next be directed toward the molecular mechanisms modulating temozolomide resistance in GBM patients and the strategies envisioned to circumvent this resistance. Finallyl we highlight the diagnostic and prognostic value of metabolomics in cancers and assess its potential usefulness in improving the current standard of care for GBM patients.

L’esame delle affinità reciproche dei taxa noti ha portato oltre che alla descrizione di una nuovaspecie e di tre nuovi sottogeneri anche a stabilire la sinonimia Muelleriella bonzanoi Casale, 1984 =Phaneropella (epiroella) muelleriana Paoletti, 1975 el’attribuzione di Muelleriella epirota Giachino, 1989al genere Phaneropella (nov. comb.). Attualmente il genere risulta cosi articolato: subgen. ***, per P. lesinae Reitter, epiroella n. subgen, per P. (e.) muelleriana Paoletti, P. (e.) epirota (Giachi-no), Hittitia n. subgen, per P. (H.) turcica Reitter e Uludagites n. subgen, per P. (U.) minuta n. ***, vengono discussi alcuni aspetti filetici e zoogeografici relativi alla 《linea filetica di Phaneropella》intesa in senso nuovo, formata cioè, per ora, da questo solo genere. Notes on the phyletic line of Phaneropella Jeannel, 1910 and description of three newsubgenera and one new species from Turkey. This article considers the morphologic and systematic re-definition of the genus Phaneropella Jeannel, 1910, at the light of the new data and of the re-examinationof the species attributed to this genus. The study of the reciprocal affinities of the known taxa, ledto the description of a new species and of three new subgenera as well as to establish the synonymyMuelleriella bonzanoi Casale, 1984 = Phaneropella (epiroella) muelleriana Paoletti, 1975 and the appar-tenence of Muelleriella epirota Giachino, 1989 to the genus Phaneropella (nov. comb.).
