Carbonic anhydrase enzymes Ⅱ, Ⅶ, Ⅸ and Ⅻ in colorectal carcinomas

AIM To investigate expression of four alpha-carbonic anhydrases(CAs) in colorectal carcinomas(CRC) and compare the results with patients' survival.METHODS Colorectal carcinoma samples from 539 CRC patients and control tissues were arranged as tissue microarrays and analyzed with antibodies against CA Ⅱ, CA Ⅶ, CA Ⅸ, and CA Ⅻ. Intensity and extent of staining were both scored from 0 to 3 in each sample. These enzyme expression levels were then correlated to patients' survival and clinicopathological parameters, which were tumor differentiation grade and stage, site of tumor, patients' age, and gender. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression hazard ratio model were used to analyze survival data. RESULTS CA Ⅱ and CA Ⅻ staining intensities correlated with patients' survival in that higher expression indicated poorer prognosis. In Cox regression analysis one unit increase in the CA Ⅱ intensity increased the hazard ratio to 1.19 fold(CI: 1.04-1.37, P = 0.009). A significant correlation was also found when comparing CA Ⅻ staining intensity with survival of CRC patients(HR = 1.18, 95%CI: 1.01-1.38, P = 0.036). The extent of CA Ⅻ immunostaining did not correlate to the patients' survival(P = 0.242, Kaplan-Meier analysis). A significant interaction between age group and extent of the CA Ⅱ staining was found. Increased extent of CA Ⅱ had a significant hazard ratio among patients 65 years and older(1.42, 95%CI: 1.16-1.73, P = 0.0006). No correlations were found between CA Ⅶ(intensity P = 0.566, extent P = 0.495, Kaplan-Meier analysis), or CA Ⅸ(intensity P = 0.879, extent P = 0.315, KaplanMeier analysis) immunostaining results and survival, or the other parameters. CONCLUSION The present findings indicate that CA Ⅱ and CA Ⅻ could be useful in predicting survival in CRC.

Acoustic and visual adaptations to predation risk: a predator affects communication in vocal female fish

Predation is an important ecological constraint that influences communication in animals.Fish respond to predators by adjusting their visual signaling behavior,but the responses in calling behavior in the presence of a visually detected predator are largely unknown.We hypothesize that fish will reduce visual and acoustic signaling including sound levels and avoid escalating fights in the presence of a predator.To test this we investigated dyadic contests in female croaking gouramis(Trichopsis vittata,Osphronemidae)in the presence and absence of a predator(Astronotus ocella-tus,Cichlidae)in an adjoining tank.Agonistic behavior in T.vittata consists of lateral(visual)displays,antiparallel circling,and production of croaking sounds and may escalate to frontal displays.We analyzed the number and duration of lateral display bouts,the number,duration,sound pressure level,and dominant frequency of croaking sounds as well as contest outcomes.The number and duration of lateral displays decreased significantly in predator when compared with nopredator trials.Total number of sounds per contest dropped in parallel but no significant changes were observed in sound characteristics.In the presence of a predator,dyadic contests were decided or terminated during lateral displays and never escalated to frontal displays.The gouramis showed approaching behavior toward the predator between lateral displays.This is the first study supporting the hypothesis that predators reduce visual and acoustic signaling in a vocal fish.Sound properties,in contrast,did not change.Decreased signaling and the lack of escalating contests reduce the fish's conspicuousness and thus predation threat.

Maximizing Convergence Speed for Second Order Consensus in Leaderless Multi-Agent Systems

The paper deals with the consensus problem in a leaderless network of agents that have to reach a common velocity while forming a uniformly spaced string.Moreover,the final common velocity(reference velocity)is determined by the agents in a distributed and leaderless way.Then,the consensus protocol parameters are optimized for networks characterized by a communication topology described by a class of directed graphs having a directed spanning tree,in order to maximize the convergence rate and avoid oscillations.The advantages of the optimized consensus protocol are enlightened by some simulation results and comparison with a protocol proposed in the related literature.The presented protocol can be applied to coordinate agents such as mobile robots,automated guided vehicles(AGVs)and autonomous vehicles that have to move with the same velocity and a common inter-space gap.

Climate change impacts on eutrophication in the Po River(Italy):Temperature-mediated reduction in nitrogen export but no effect on phosphorus

Rivers worldwide are under stress from eutrophication and nitrate pollution,but the ecological consequences overlap with climate change,and the resulting interactions may be unexpected and still unexplored.The Po River basin(northern Italy)is one of the most agriculturally productive and densely populated areas in Europe.It remains unclear whether the climate change impacts on the thermal and hydrological regimes are already affecting nutrient dynamics and transport to coastal areas.The present work addresses the long-term trends(1992-2020)of nitrogen and phosphorus export by investigating both the annual magnitude and the seasonal patterns and their relationship with water temperature and discharge trajectories.Despite the constant diffuse and point sources in the basin,a marked decrease(-20%)in nitrogen export,mostly as nitrate,was recorded in the last decade compared to the 1990 s,while no significant downward trend was observed for phosphorus.The water temperature of the Po River has warmed,with the most pronounced signals in summer(+0.13℃/year)and autumn(+0.16℃/year),together with the strongest increase in the number of warm days(+70%-80%).An extended seasonal window of warm temperatures and the persistence of low flow periods are likely to create favorable conditions for permanent nitrate removal via denitrification,resulting in a lower delivery of reactive nitrogen to the sea.The present results show that climate change-driven warming may enhance nitrogen processing by increasing respiratory river metabolism,thereby reducing export from spring to early autumn,when the risk of eutrophication in coastal zones is higher.

Postmortem imaging as a complementary tool for the investigation of cardiac death

In the past 2 decades,modern radiological methods,such as multiple detector computed tomography (MDCT),MDCT-angiography,and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)were introduced into postmortem practice for investigation of sudden death (SD),including cases of sudden cardiac death (SCD).In forensic cases,the underlying cause of SD is most frequently cardiovascular with coronary atherosclerotic disease as the leading cause.There are many controversies about the role of postmortem imaging in establishing the cause of death and especially the value of minimally invasive autopsy techniques.This paper discusses the state of the art for postmortem radiological evaluation of the heart compared to classical postmortem examination,especially in cases of SCD.In SCD cases,postmortem CT is helpful to estimate the heart size and to visualize haemopericardium and calcified plaques and valves,as well as to identify and locate cardiovascular devices.Angiographic methods are useful to provide a detailed view of the coronary arteries and to analyse them,especially regarding the extent and location of stenosis and obstruction.In postsurgical cases,it allows verification and documentation of the patency of stents and bypass grafts before opening the body.Postmortem MRI is used to investigate soft tissues such as the myocardium,but images are susceptible to postmortem changes and further work is necessary to increase the understanding of these radiological aspects,especially of the ischemic myocardium.In postsurgery cases,the value of postmortem imaging of the heart is reportedly for the diagnostic and documentation purposes.The implementation of new imaging methods into routine postmortem practice is challenging,as it requires not only an investment in equipment but,more importantly,investment in the expertise of interpreting the images.Once those requirements are implemented,however,they bring great advantages in investigating cases of SCD,as they allow documentation of the body,orientation of sampling for further analyses and ga

The Memorandum of Understanding Between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative has been signed and will remain in effect until 2022.The Philippines and China have agreed upon the idea that economic progress and development need not be a zero-sum game;and can be achieved through efforts in aiding developing countries "to help build stronger economies and therefore richer markets for the commercial and cultural exchanges"This has marked the beginning of a relationship which undergirds win-win cooperation and shared destiny.These mutually-beneficial arrangements,specifically on infrastructure,has been seen to be in line with the Philippines’administration program called "Build Build Build".Entering the Age of Infrastructure,it aims to build 75 infrastructure projects including roads,bridges,airports,sea ports and railways.Through the years,the Philippines has had many key partner countries to assist them in building infrastructure through Official Development Aid.While ODA has proven to be successful,it wasn’t without turbulence.These past issues may shed some light upon future partnerships.And this paper aims to answer what are the key issues of Philippine ODA in infrastructure?What are the lessons learned from these past relationships?How can this be applied in the relationship between China and the Philippines’involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative?Given the lessons learned from previous ODA assisted projects and past international political and economic relationship,this paper posits that this arena of international political economy-Belt and Road Initiative-can thrive between the Philippines and China.

Urban areas face multiple risks: they range from natural hazard-induced disasters, fires, and building code violations to social risks such as vandalism, crime, and social disorientation, among others. These risks often interact with each other and cannot be dealt with in isolation. As a means to identify, assess, and manage multiple risks, the concept of ‘‘risk governance'' has been developed, which promises to provide integrative and comprehensive tools to deal with the many manifestations of risks.In this article, risk governance concept has been specifically applied to complex risk situations in urban areas. The concept of risk governance pertains to the many ways in which multiple actors, individuals and institutions, public and private, deal with risks. It includes formal institutions and regimes and informal arrangements. The article first develops an adaptive and integrative model of risk governance and applies this model to the urban environments.After a short summary of the roots of risk governance, key concepts, such as simple, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous risks, are discussed. The main emphasis is on each of the five phases of risk governance: pre-estimation,interdisciplinary assessment, risk evaluation, risk management, and risk communication.

MIS 5e sea surface temperature estimation;a multi-proxy approach using a marine macrofossil assemblage(Mar Piccolo,Gulf of Taranto,Southern Italy)

It is reported a multi-proxy palaeoclimatic study conducted on a MIS 5e calcarenite from the Mar Piccolo Basin(MP),Gulf of Taranto(GT)(Central Mediterranean).The calcarenite returned a rich malacofauna consisting of 120 extant species,including four of the tropical Senegalese Fauna,today absent in the Mediterranean.The biogeographic-climatic affinity of the assemblage shows,compared to today,a double percentage of warm affinity species,while the cold affinity species are nearly equally represented,indicating a warmer but not strictly tropical SST.This is confirmed by the most recurring preferred SST ranges of the assemblage,indicating an average of 20℃.The skeletal compositions of five well-preserved molluscan and coral specimens were analyzed for trace elements and stable isotopes for further mean SST estimations.From the comparison of the results of several equations available in literature,it appears that only some SST estimations are realistic,converging into similar values of,on average,20.8±0.9℃.Considering all the used proxies,the MIS 5e SST difference compared to today falls in the range 1.2—2.0℃for the GT(being a more reasonable scenario)and 2.0—2.8℃for the MP.This is not a firmly tropical-like SST setting as suggested by the sole Senegalese fauna,indicating at least 2.7℃—3.5℃more than today’s GT and MP,respectively.The approximations and assumptions made for obtaining SST values with any single proxy indicate the need of a multi-proxy approach to define the best SST estimation.

An Eco-Route Planner for Heavy Duty Vehicles

Driving style,traffic and weather conditions have a significant impact on vehicle fuel consumption and in particular,the road freight traffic significantly contributes to the CO2 increase in atmosphere.This paper proposes an Eco-Route Planner devoted to determine and communicate to the drivers of Heavy-Duty Vehicles(HDVs)the eco-route that guarantees the minimum fuel consumption by respecting the travel time established by the freight companies.The proposed eco-route is the optimal route from origin to destination and includes the optimized speed and gear profiles.To this aim,the Cloud Computing System architecture is composed of two main components:the Data Management System that collects,fuses and integrates the raw external sources data and the Cloud Optimizer that builds the route network,selects the eco-route and determines the optimal speed and gear profiles.Finally,a real case study is discussed by showing the benefit of the proposed Eco-Route planner.
