Ba substitution for enhancement of the thermoelectric properties of LaCoO_(3) ceramics(0≤x≤0.75)

In the present work, dense perovskite ceramics were successfully prepared from a series of La1-xBaxCoO3 solid solutions in the range of substitution 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.75 using solid state reaction and conventional sintering. Structural properties of La1-xBaxCoO3 were systematically investigated and thermoelectric properties were measured in the temperature range of 330–1000 K. The results show that the thermoelectric properties of Ba-substituted LaCoO3 depend on x. Indeed, at 330 K, electrical conductivity presents an optimum value for x = 0.25 with a value of σmax ≈ 2.2×105 S·m–1 whereas the Seebeck coefficient decreases when x and/or the temperature increases. The Ba-substituted LaCoO3 samples exhibit p-type semiconducting behaviour. The best power factor value found is 3.4×10–4 W·m–1·K–2 at 330 K for x = 0.075, which is 10% higher than the optimum value measured in La1–xSrxCoO3 for x = 0.05. The thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity increase with increasing temperature and Ba concentration. La1-xBaxCoO3 shows a maximum figure of merit(ZT = 0.048) for x = 0.05 at 330 K, 25% higher than the best value in La1–xSrxCoO3 compounds.

Transcript Accumulation Dynamics of Phenylpropanoid Pathway Genes in the Maturing Xylem and Phloem of Picea abies during Latewood Formation

In temperate regions, latewood is produced when cambial activity declines with the approach of autumnal dormancy. The understanding of the temporal （cambium activity vs dormancy） and spatial （phloem, cambial region, maturing xylem） regulation of key genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway during latewood formation represents a crucial step towards providing new insights into the molecular basis of xylogenesis. In this study, the temporal pattern of transcript accumulation of 12 phenylpropanoid genes （PAL1, C4H315, C4H4, 4CL3, 4CL4, HCT1, C3H3, CCoAOMT1, COMT2, COMT5, CCR2） was analyzed in maturing xylem and phloem of Picea abies during latewood formation. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analyses revealed a well-defined RNA accumulation pattern of genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway during latewood formation. Differences in the RNA accumulation patterns were detected between the different tissue types analyzed. The results obtained here demonstrated that the molecular processes involved in monolignol biosynthesis are not restricted to the cambial activity timeframe but continued after the end of cambium cell proliferation. Furthermore, since it has been shown that lignification of maturing xylem takes place in late autumn, we argue on the basis of our data that phloem could play a key role in the monoliqnol biosynthesis process.

Neurotrophins play a major role in the regulation of neuronal growth such as neurite sprouting or regeneration in response to nerve injuries. The role of nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in maintaining the survival of peripheral neurons remains poorly understood. In regenerative medicine, different modalities have been investigated for the delivery of growth factors to the injured neurons, in search of a suitable system for clinical applications. This study was to investigate the influence of nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor on the growth of neurites using two in vitro models of dorsal root ganglia explants and dorsal root ganglia-derived primary cell dissociated cultures. Quantitative data showed that the total neurite length and tortuosity were differently influenced by trophic factors. Nerve growth factor and, indirectly, brain-derived neurotrophic factor stimulate the tortuous growth of sensory fibers and the formation of cell clusters. Neurotrophin-3, however, enhances neurite growth in terms of length and linearity allowing for a more organized and directed axonal elongation towards a peripheral target compared to the other growth factors. These findings could be of considerable importance for any clinical application of neurotrophic factors in peripheral nerve regeneration. Ethical approval was obtained from the Regione Piemonte Animal Ethics Committee ASLTO1(file # 864/2016-PR) on September 14, 2016.

In this work, we synthesized cubic perovskite ceramics of the whole La_(1–x)Sr_xCoO_3(0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solution for the first time. Synthesis was carried out by solid state reaction and conventional sintering to reach dense ceramics. For x > 0.8, it was necessary to substitute 3% cobalt by silicon to stabilize the cubic perovskite structure. Electrical conductivity increased with Sr content to reach 3×10~5 S·m^(–1) at 330 K for x = 0.3. However, the optimum electrical properties have been found for x = 0.05 at 330 K with PF_(max) = 3.11×10^(–4)W·m^(–1)·K^(–2). Indeed, the Seebeck coefficient was decreasing when x increased to reach values close to 0 for x ≥ 0.3. Thermal conductivity was low at low temperature(≈ 2.5 W×m^(–1)·K^(–1)) and increased up to 6.5 W·m^(–1)·K^(–1) when temperature increased. As the highest power factor was reached at low temperature as well as the lowest thermal conductivity, La_(1–x)Sr_xCoO_3 compounds with low x values appeared as very promising thermoelectric materials around room temperature, on the contrary to layered cobalt oxides. For high x values, Seebeck coefficient values close to zero made these materials unsuitable for thermoelectric applications.

In one of the first pages and crucial scenes of The Lying Days （1953）, we soon associate the narrating voice with that of a bright, inquisitive child of Scottish descent immersed in the harsh Witwatersrand scenario of a mining estate outskirts in the 1930s, along a path crammed with Jews＇ concession stores and exotic-looking natives. The unruly little girl is Helen Shaw, the late Nadine Gordimer＇s fictional double in her still somewhat neglected first novel, a Bildungsroman where the South African writer coming from Springs admirably capitalized on the ＂camera-eye＂ perspectives and zooming-in on details which had already informed much of her masterly short fiction. The aim of the present paper is to shed light on Helen＇s difficult growth towards sociopolitical and ethical awakening--in a country finding itself more and more trapped in the apartheid grip--by pointing out the earliest, embryonic stages of such a progressive knocking down of epistemic barriers. The author will thus focus on ＂The Mine＂, the first and most concise of the three parts making up the novel, and show how Gordimer＇s acute prose, incisive style, and descriptive strategies prove to be a fitting tool for recording and weighing the experience of an indefatigable observer, a hungry mind in search of erased features, meaningful connections, revealing contexts and subjects

Neurodegenerative diseases represent a growing burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown promise as a potential therapy due to their neuroregenerative, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory properties, which are, however, linked to the bioactive substances they release, collectively known as secretome. This paper provides an overview of the most recent research on the safety and efficacy of MSC-derived secretome and extracellular vesicles (EVs) in clinical (if available) and preclinical models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, acute ischemic stroke, and spinal cord injury. The article explores the biologically active substances within MSC-secretome/EVs, the mechanisms responsible for the observed therapeutic effects, and the strategies that may be used to optimize MSC-secretome/EVs production based on specific therapeutic needs. The review concludes with a critical discussion of current clinical trials and a perspective on potential future directions in translating MSC-secretome and EVs into the clinic, specifically regarding how to address the challenges associated with their pharmaceutical manufacturing, including scalability, batch-to-batch consistency, adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines, formulation, and storage, along with quality controls, access to the market and relative costs, value for money and impact on total expenditure.

The purpose of this study is to verify the physiological effect and describe the intensity of training in response to internal and external loads,through Session Rate of Perceived Exertion and Speed High Intensity Distance in Meters reports,on professional soccer players engaged in weekly training(199 Sessions,43 weeks)and league games(32 official matches).Twenty-two male professional soccer players(n=22)of the Italian national championship under-19 are involved in this study during the season ***,Weekly and Monthly RPE(perceived exertion)Session(Borg CR-10 Scale)is a good indicator of the amount of work done:training time multiplied by perceived effort(TL=Training Time×RPE).With Arbitrary units(a.u.)produced by the individual and used for team-based data analysis,we analyze the intensity produced by workout depending on the working ***,by means of global positioning system technology(K-Sport,Montelabbate PU,Italy 10 Hz),we statistically established the existing relationship with high intensity speed distance(>16 km/h)and session rate of perceived exertion to describe how the internal(represented by the sum of the stresses that the body undergoes an external load;is strictly subjective)and external loads(the objective quantification of the means used in training km routes,running speed,slope,type of recovery),are correlated(r=0.87,p<0.01,95%CI).The statistical analysis highlights how these methods are suitable to quantifying the high-intensity work done by the soccer player during the workout and the game.

Levodopa/Carbidopa Intestinal Gel for Treatment of Advanced Parkinson’s Disease: An Update on the Effects of Cognitive Functions

Cognitive impairment is a frequent non-motorsymptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD). In early disease stage, this takes the features of dysexecutive syndrome, and is mostly dependent on derangement of frontostriatal circuitries. In advanced stages, worsening of dysexecutive symptoms is accompanied by disorientation and memory deficit leading to dementia in 30% of cases, due to multiple neurotransmitter derangement. Dysexecutive symptoms in the early stages of PD may benefit from dopamine replacement therapy (DRT). Conversely, severe cognitive symptoms in more advanced stages are frequently aggravated by DRT. In particular, pulsatile stimulation of dopaminergic receptors by orally administered levodopa (LD) plays a significant negative role on cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms in advanced PD. The introduction of a gel of LD-carbidopa for continuous intestinal administration (LCIG) allows marked stabilization of plasma LD concentrations and provides benefit on motor fluctuations and dyskinesia of significantly greater magnitude than conventional oral administration in advanced PD patients. The results from several preliminary studies suggest that efficacy of LCGI on motor symptoms may be accompanied by good tolerability and potential benefit on several non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment. Future studies with longer observation period and larger cohorts are advised to confirm these preliminary observations.
