Polygonatum kingianum rhizome extract alleviates collagen antibody-induced arthritis by modulating proinflammatory cytokine production in mice

Objective: To evaluate the anti-arthritic effects of Polygonatum kingianum rhizome extract using both in vitro and in vivo ***: Lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages were treated with an ethanol extract of Polygonatum kingianum rhizomes at different concentrations to determine nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2(PGE2) production. For in vivo study, Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract was further investigated for its antiinflammatory effect in a mouse model with collagen antibodyinduced arthritis. Phytochemical study of Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract was also ***: Saponins(142 mg/g total yield) was the main component in the Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract. 5α,8α-ergosterol peroxide,(E,E)-9-oxooctadeca-10,12-dienoic acid and 3-(2?-hydroxy-4?-methoxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-8-methyl-chroman-4-one were isolated from the extract. Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract exhibited potential anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting nitric oxide and PGE2 production in RAW 264.7 cells in a dosedependent manner. The level of arthritis in mice with collagen antibody-induced arthritis was significantly reduced(P<0.01) after treatment with Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract, particularly at a dose of 1 000 mg/kg body weight. Besides, the extract demonstrated the regulatory effects on serum tumor necrosis factoralpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10 in treated ***: Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract has beneficial effects on inflammatory cytokine regulation and PGE2 inhibition in an experimental mouse model with collagen antibody-induced arthritis. The phytochemical screening reveals that the saponin, as the main component, and sterols(daucosterol and 5α,8α-ergosterol peroxide) from Polygonatum kingianum ethanol extract may contribute to its promising in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory activities.

The identification of landslide-prone areas is an essential step in landslide hazard assessment and mitigation of landslide-related *** this study,we applied two novel deep learning algorithms,the recurrent neural network(RNN)and convolutional neural network(CNN),for national-scale landslide susceptibility mapping of *** prepared a dataset comprising 4069 historical landslide locations and 11 conditioning factors(altitude,slope degree,profile curvature,distance to river,aspect,plan curvature,distance to road,distance to fault,rainfall,geology and land-sue)to construct a geospatial database and divided the data into the training and the testing *** then developed RNN and CNN algorithms to generate landslide susceptibility maps of Iran using the training *** calculated the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve and used the area under the curve(AUC)for the quantitative evaluation of the landslide susceptibility maps using the testing *** performance in both the training and testing phases was provided by the RNN algorithm(AUC=0.88)than by the CNN algorithm(AUC=0.85).Finally,we calculated areas of susceptibility for each province and found that 6%and 14%of the land area of Iran is very highly and highly susceptible to future landslide events,respectively,with the highest susceptibility in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province(33.8%).About 31%of cities of Iran are located in areas with high and very high landslide *** results of the present study will be useful for the development of landslide hazard mitigation strategies.

Impacts of optimization strategies on performance,power/energy consumption of a GPU based parallel reduction

In the era of modern high performance computing, GPUs have been considered an excellent accelerator for general purpose data-intensive parallel applications. To achieve application speedup from GPUs, many of performance-oriented optimization techniques have been proposed. However, in order to satisfy the recent trend of power and energy consumptions, power/energy-aware optimization of GPUs needs to be investigated with detailed analysis in addition to the performance-oriented optimization. In this work, in order to explore the impact of various optimization strategies on GPU performance, power and energy consumptions, we evaluate performance and power/energy consumption of a well-known application running on different commercial GPU devices with the different optimization strategies. In particular, in order to see the more generalized performance and power consumption patterns of GPU based accelerations, our evaluations are performed with three different Nvdia GPU generations(Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell architectures), various core clock frequencies and memory clock frequencies. We analyze how a GPU kernel execution is affected by optimization and what GPU architectural factors have much impact on its performance and power/energy consumption. this paper also categorizes which optimization technique primarily improves which metric(i.e., performance, power or energy efficiency). Furthermore, voltage frequency scaling(VFS) is also applied to examine the effect of changing a clock frequency on these metrics. In general, our work shows that effective GPU optimization strategies can improve the application performance significantly without increasing power and energy consumption.

Impact of Land Acquisition on the Sustainable Livelihoods in Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam

The concept of sustainable livelihood is an attempt to go beyond the conventional definitions and approaches to poverty eradication. These had been found to be too narrow because they focused only on certain aspects or manifestations of poverty, such as low income, or did not consider other vital aspects of poverty such as vulnerability and social exclusion. It is now recognized that more attention must be paid to the various factors and processes which either constrain or enhance poor people＇s ability to make a living in an economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable manner. Construction of nuclear power plants in Vietnam is in the first step of implementing and will be allocated in Thuan Nam and Ninh Hai districts, Ninh Thuan province, an agricultural and poor province in Vietnam. this requires a large area of land mobilized, thus a part of popupation living in the project area has to move far away. Besides the positive effects of this project, there are significantly negative impacts on the people living in the project areas and nearby, and their livelihoods are seriously affected. this paper aims at assessing the impact of the nuclear power plants construction on the livelihoods of people in two districts in Ninh Thuan province, in order to have mechanisms and policies to support reasonably and effectively, contributing to stabilize people＇s lives and local development.

Novel enzymatically crosslinked chitosan hydrogels with free-radical-scavenging property and promoted cellular behaviors under hyperglycemia

The impairment of regenerative processes induced by high blood-glucose level(hyperglycemia) and excessive reactive oxygen species(ROS) contributes to the diabetic complication progression and development. In this study, an injectable, in situ crosslinkable chitosan hydrogel with ROS-scavenging capability was developed by conjugating gallic acid onto the chitosan backbone(CGA). We hypothesized that gallic acid serves as both antioxidant and crosslinking moieties to form hydrogel in situ by means of enzymatic crosslinking with horseradish peroxidase(HRP). The rapid gelation(from 30 s) was observed by vial tilting. The mechanical properties and microstructures of CGA hydrogels can be well controlled by varying the concentrations of H2O2. The ROSscavenging ability of these CGA hydrogels was demonstrated against DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, and total reducing power. Notably, in an in vitro hyperglycemia environment, CGA hydrogels significantly improved the proliferation and migration of human dermal fibroblast cells, which are closely related to diabetic wound healing. These results suggest that CGA hydrogels have potential as advanced materials for the treatment of diabetes-related diseases via attenuating the excessive ROS production and improving cellular behaviors.

Antibiofilm activity of a-mangostin extracted from Garcinia mangostana L. against Staphylococcus aureus

Objective: To isolate a-mangostin(AMG) from the peels of mangosteen(Garcinia mangostana L.), grown in Vietnam, and to investigate antibiofilm activity of this compound against three Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) strains, one of which was methicillin-resistant S. aureus(MRSA) and the other two strains were methicillinsensitive S. aureus(MSSA).Methods: AMG in n-hexane fraction was isolated on a silica gel column and chemically analyzed by HPLC and NMR. The antibiofilm activity of this compound was investigated by using a 96-well plate model for the formation of biofilms. Biofilm biomass was quantified using crystal violet. The viability of cells was observed under confocal microscopy using LIVE/DEAD Bac Light stains. Biofilm composition was determined using specific chemical and enzyme tests for polysaccharide, protein and DNA. Membranedamaging activity was assayed by measuring the hemolysis of human red blood cells in presence of ***: The results indicated that the isolated AMG, with a purity that exceeded 98%,had minimal inhibitory concentrations in the range of 4.6–9.2 mmol/L for the three strains tested. Interestingly, the MSSA strains were more sensitive to AMG than the MRSA strain. Minimal bactericidal concentrations were 2-fold higher than the minimal inhibitory concentration values for the three strains, indicating that AMG was a bactericidal compound. AMG also prevented biofilm formation effectively, albeit that again the MRSA strain was the most resistant. Interestingly, biofilms of the MRSA strain contained protein as a main component of the extracellular matrix, whereas this was polysaccharide in the MSSA strains. this might relate to the resistance of the MRSA 252 strain to *** using human red blood cells indicated that AMG caused significant membrane damage with 50% of cell lysis occurred at concentration of about 36 mmol/***: Our results provide evidence that the isolated AMG has inhibitory activity against biofilm formation

In this study,we investigated the chemical composition of dissolved solids in the Ca River basin,North-Central *** samples were collected from August 2017 to July 2018 at three hydrological stations located in the main stream of the Ca *** weathering was found as the dominant process controlling the water chemistry in that *** average concentrations of dissolved solids generally decreased from upstream to downstream,resulting in low concentrations of the major ions in the downstream *** in the concentrations of major chemical ions and suspended solids at discharge were also *** chemical weathering products were found to behave chemostatically with increasing discharges ***,dilution behaviors of solutes were shown in both midstream and *** evidence shows that water storage in reservoirs impacts a variety of suspended solids and dissolved solids in the Ca River.
