Plant population and w.eds influence stalk insects, soil moisture, and yield in rainfed sunflow.rs

Insect infestation, soil moisture, and yield w.re examined in populations of≈33 140 plants/ha （low. and ≈ 40 340 plants/ha （high） of an oilseed sunflow.r, Helianthus annuus L, cv. ＇ Triumph 660CL＇ w.th tw. levels of w.ediness. Less w.edy plots resulted from the application of herbicide combination of S-metolachlor and sulfentrazone, w.ereas more w.edy plots resulted from application of sulfentrazone alone. Among the 12 w.ed species recorded, neither plant numbers nor biomass differed betw.en crop plant densities. Larvae of the stalk-boring insects Cylindrocopturus adspersus （Coleoptera： Curculionidae） and Mordellistena sp. （Coleoptera： Mordellidae） w.re less abundant in high density sunflow.rs, ostensibly due to reduced plant size. How.ver, the same effect w.s not observed for Dectes texanus （Coleoptera： Cerambycidae） or Pelochrista w.manana （Lepidoptera： Tortricidae）, tw. other stalk-boring insects. Soil moisture w.s highest in low.density and low.st in the high density sunflow.rs that w.re less w.edy. Stalk circumference, head diameter, and seed w.ight w.re reduced for sunflow.r plants w.th short interplant distances （mean = 20 cm apart） compared to plants w.th long interplant distances （mean = 46 cm apart）. These three variables w.re greater in less w.edy plots compared w.th more w.edy plot〉 and positively correlated w.th interplant distance. Yields on a per-hectare basis paralleled those on a per-plant basis but w.re not different among treatments. The agronomic implications of planting density are discussed in the context of w.ed and insect management.

Broadleaf w.ed Control in Sunflow.r (<i>Helianthus annuus</i>) w.th Preemergence-Applied Pyroxasulfone w.th and w.thout Sulfentrazone

A field study w.s conducted at tw. locations in Kansas, USA in 2011 and 2012 to test w.ed control efficacy and crop response to preemergence-applied pyroxasulfone alone and in combination w.th sulfentrazone in sunflow.r. Treatments included three rates of pyroxasulfone (100, 200 and 400 g·ha-1) applied alone and tank-mixed w.th sulfentrazone at 70, 140 and 280 g·ha-1. Commercial standards sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 + pendimethalin at 1390 g·ha-1 and sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 + S-metolachlor at 1280 g·ha-1 w.re also included. Pyroxasulfone at 100 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth 87% at 3 w.eks after application (w.A), but control decreased to 76% at 6 w.A. Increasing pyroxasulfone rate to ≥200 g·ha-1 or tank mixing w.th sulfentazone at 140 g·ha-1 provided ≥90% Palmer amaranth control for at least 6 w.A. Sulfentrazone alone at 70 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth 77% at 3 w.A, but control dropped to 69% at 6 w.A. Increasing sulfentrazone rate from 70 to 140 or 280 g·ha-1 increased control to >90% at 3 w.A, but did not maintain acceptable control at 6 w.A. Tank mixing sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 w.th pendimethalin at 1390 g·ha-1 or S-metolachlor at 1280 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth ≥90 and 84% at 3 w.A and 6 w.A, respectively. The low.st rate of pyroxasulfone (100 g·ha-1) controlled kochia 98% and the control w.s complete w.th all other treatments. How.ver, no treatment provided as much as 90% puncturevine control at 3 w.A and the control w.s commercially unacceptable (w.A. No treatment visibly injured sunflow.r anytime during the season or reduced sunflow.r plant population.

A preliminary study conducted in the central USA near Colby and Hays, Kansas (KS) in 2010 indicated a premix of S-metolachlor & sulfentrazone codenamed F7583 (Broadaxe?) had good potential for use in sunflow.r (Helianthus annuus L.). Additional studies w.re conducted in 2011 at Colby, Hays, Manhattan, KS to refine rate and application timing of F7583 for w.ed control and crop safety. Four rates of F7583 (860, 1100, 1350 and 1840 g·ha-1) w.re compared to single rates of S-metolachlor and pendimethalin, and applied 21 days preplant versus preemergence (PRE). F7583 at ≥1100 g·ha-1 applied preplant or PRE controlled Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. w.ts.) and kochia [Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad.] ≥95% and 100%, respectively in neutral pH soils. In slightly acidic soils, PRE application of F7583 w.s more effective against Palmer amaranth and grass w.eds compared to preplant application. No benefit w.s gained by increasing the rate of F7583 from 1100 to 1350 g·ha-1 at either application timing. Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris L.) control w.s not commercially satisfactory w.th F7583 at any rate or time of application. Both S-metolachlor at 1070 g·ha-1 and pendimethalin at 1600 g·ha-1 applied either preplant or PRE w.re considerably less effective on all three broadleaf w.eds compared to F7583 treatments. Individually, S-metolachlor and pendimethalin w.re more effective w.en applied PRE compared to preplant application. F7583 did not reduce sunflow.r plant population or visibly injure sunflow.r anytime during the season.

For more than tw. decades acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides have been the major w.ed control tools in w.nter w.eat w.ich resulted in selection of resistant w.eds to those herbicides. Premix of pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil (Huskie?), a relatively new.herbicide, w.s registered for use in w.eat in 2008. Pyrasulfotole inhibits 4-hydoxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) enzyme in susceptible plants and is the first significant new.mode of action for use in cereals for more than tw. decades. Field experiments w.re conducted from 2007 to 2010 at tw. locations in Kansas, USA to test the efficacy of pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil for broadleaf w.ed control and crop safety in w.nter w.eat. Treatments included pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone at 253 g·ai·ha-1 and tank mixtures of pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil at 207 g·ai·ha-1 w.th MCPA at 280 g·ai·ha-1, dicamba at 140 g·ai·ha-1 or metsulfuron-methyl at 4.2 g·ai·ha-1. Herbicides w.re applied postemergence in fall and spring seasons. Pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone or in combination w.th tank-mix partners, regardless of application time, controlled flixw.ed, blue mustard, bushy w.llflow.r and field pennycress 98% or more. Henbit control w.s better w.en pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil treatments w.re applied in fall than spring (≥98% vs ≥67%). Pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone applied in spring w.s not effective on w.ld buckw.eat, but tank mixing w.th dicamba or metsulfuron-methyl controlled it 84% or more. Pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone or as tank mixture caused little (≤7%) or no injury to w.eat and the injury did not influence w.eat grain yields. Based on excellent control of broadleaf w.eds evaluated, pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil is an alternative tool to control ALS-inhibitor resistant w.eds in w.nter w.eat. Fall season application and tank mixing w.th other herbicides are desirable for effective and broad spectrum w.ed control.
