Methylammonium lead iodide,as related organometal halide perovskites,emerged recently as a particularly attractive material for photovoltaic *** origin of its appealing properties is sometimes assigned to its potential ferroelectric character,which remains however a topic of intense ***,we rationalize from first-principles calculations how the spatial arrangement of methylammonium polar molecules is progressively constrained by the subtle interplay between their tendency to bond with the inorganic framework and the appearance of iodine octahedra rotations inherent to the perovskite *** disordered tetragonal phase observed at room temperature is *** show that it should a priori become ferroelectric but that iodine octahedra rotations drive the system toward an antipolar orthorhombic ground state,making it a missed ferroelectric.

With the cure rate of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia （ALL） approaching 90%, further improvement in the treatment outcome and quality of life of patients will require better understanding of the mechanisms of drug resistance, identifying new leukemic cell genetic lesions that are amendable to available target therapy, and optimizing treatment based on host pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenomics. Deeper characterization of leukemic cell genetic abnormalities has discovered new subtypes of leukemia such as early T-cell precursor ALL and Philadelphia chromosome-like ALL, and identified many genomic alterations that have diagnostic, prognostic, or therapeutic implications. In this regard, several novel fusion transcripts are responsive to ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors and potentially to JAK inhibitors. Genome-wide analyses have also unraveled the role of inherited cancer predisposing genes and small nucleotide polymorphisms of several genes in the development of childhood ALL. These advances promise to lead to more sophisticated personalized treatment strategies in the near future.

Flocking behavior of forest birds in hong Kong,South China

This paper reports observations of flocking behavior of birds in a well-protected secondary forest in Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China. A total of 1025 flocks including 5255 birds and 48 species were observed between October 2002 and November 2003. Most flocks consisted of only one species. The observed flocks averaged 1.79 +/- 0.05 (SE) species and 5.13 +/- 0.18 (SE) birds. The Japanese White-eye was the most numerous species and was present in 21.6% of the observed flocks. Seasonal trends in both flock size and number of species were similar to those in overall bird density and species richness in the study area reported in a previous study.

The Bafoussam area in western Cameroon is part of the central Cameroon Volcanic Ligne(CVL).This study presents the mineralogy,major and trace element compositions,Sr-Pb-Hf isotopes,and new K-Ar geochronological data about mafic and felsic volcanic *** rocks belong to two different series:A transitional series made of basalts,basaltic andesite,and trachytes and an alkaline mafic series with basalts,hawaiites,and *** age data show that the transitional series belongs to the oldest part of the CVL and was emplaced between 47 and 35 *** alkaline volcanism is younger,with ages ranging from10 to 4.5 *** evolution in both series is accomplished through a fractional crystallization process,with the removal of olivine and clinopyroxene,while plagioclase does not seem to be a major crystallizing *** the samples are enriched in incompatible trace elements,but the rocks from the alkaline series have more fractionated REE patterns and high Nb content compared to the transitional mafic *** lavas have lower initial^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr and higher^(176)Hf/^(177)Hf and Pb isotopic ratios than the transitional *** La/Nb and high^(87)Sr/^(86)Sriratio are among chemical characteristics that show that some samples from the transitional series have interacted with a crustal component during their evolution in the *** cannot be used for discussing the mantle source of the volcanic rocks from this *** elements show that primary magmas for both series formed in a garnet-bearing mantle source,with higher partial melting degrees(3-5%)for the transitional magmas than for the alkaline magmas(vas formed from two different mantle *** magmas formed from a pyroxenite-bearing enriched mantle with low Pb isotopic *** mantle source is present in all the oldest lavas from the *** magmas formed from an HIMU-like mantle sourc

Non-isocyanate polyurethane(NIPU)foams from a commercial hydrolysable tannin extract,chestnut wood tannin extract,have been prepared to determine what chemical species and products are taking part in the reactions *** method is based on two main steps:the reaction with dimethyl carbonate and the formation of urethane bonds by further reaction of the carbonated tannin with a diamine-like hexamethylene *** hydroxyl groups on the tannin polyphenols and on the carbohydrates intimately linked with it and part of a hydrolysable tannin are the groups involved in these *** carbohydrate skeleton of the hydrolysable tannin is also able to participate through its hydroxyl groups to the same two reactions rendering the whole molecular complex able to react to form *** analysis by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization(MALDI-TOF)mass spectrometry and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(13C NMR)to further investigate the reaction mechanisms involved revealed the unsuspected complexity of chestnut hydrolysable tannin,with different fragments reacting in different manners forming a hardened network of considerable *** the morphology and performance of these types of foams changes slightly with the change in the amount of glutaraldehyde and hexamine hardeners,the best performing foam formulation previously determined was scanned by SEM and analysed chemically for the structures formed.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common clinically important cardiac arrhythmia accounting for 20% to 25% of strokes and is a common cause of congestive heart failure.1,2 With the aging population and changing demographics,atrial fibrillation has become an epidemic affecting 2.66 million people in the United *** prevalence of atrial fibrillation is estimated to increase by 5 fold to 12 million by 2050.3 The diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation represent a significant health care burden of $15.7 billion per year.4 Treatment of atrial fibrillation using antiarrhythmic drugs has been disappointing,while radiofrequency ablation approaches have limitations,including unclear long-term *** in treatment is needed and pursuit of novel modalities of therapy requires fundamental knowledge in the molecular mechanisms that lead to atrial fibrillation,including electrical remodeling in atrial fibrillation.

Seed size and the growth environment are important variables that influence seed germination, growth and biomass of seedlings and future tree harvest and should thus be taken into account in agroforestry and reforestation programmes for endangered species like Pterocarpus erinaceus. In the present study, to assess seedling germination and vigour in P. erinaceus as a function of seed size in two environments, 1080 seeds and 360 seedlings were evaluated at two separate sites in Côte d'Ivoire. The results show that large seeds had very high germination rates (up to 100%) and produced more vigorous plants better able to adapt to climate change. The maternal environment and seed size had a significant influence on seed germination (P vation strategies for the species and are key factors for rural populations, loggers, and forest management structures for the silviculture of this species.
