MicroRNAs as potential diagnostic biomarkers for bipolar disorder

Abnormal expression of microRNAs is connected to brain development and disease and could provide novel biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of bipolar disorder. We performed a pubMed search for microRNA biomarkers in bipolar disorder and found 18 original research articles on studies performed with human patients and published from January 2011 to June 2023. These studies included microRNA profiling in bloodand brain-based materials. From the studies that had validated the preliminary findings,potential candidate biomarkers for bipolar disorder in adults could be miR-140-3p,-30d-5p,-330-5p,-378a-5p,-21-3p,-330-3p,-345-5p in whole blood, miR-19b-3p,-1180-3p,-125a-5p, let-7e-5p in blood plasma, and miR-7-5p,-23b-5p,-142-3p,-221-5p,-370-3p in the blood serum. Two of the studies had investigated the changes in microRNA expression of patients with bipolar disorder receiving treatment. One showed a significant increase in plasma miR-134 compared to baseline after 4 weeks of treatment which included typical antipsychotics, atypical antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines. The other study had assessed the effects of prescribed medications which included neurotransmitter receptorsite binders(drug class B) and sedatives, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, and analgesics(drug class C) on microRNA results. The combined effects of the two drug classes increased the significance of the results for miR-219 and-29c with miR-30e-3p and-526b* acquiring significance. MicroRNAs were tested to see if they could serve as biomarkers of bipolar disorder at different clinical states of mania, depression, and euthymia. One study showed that upregulation in whole blood of miR-9-5p,-29a-3p,-106a-5p,-106b-5p,-107,-125a-3p,-125b-5p and of miR-107,-125a-3p occurred in manic and euthymic patients compared to controls, respectively, and that upregulation of miR-106a-5p,-107 was found for manic compared to euthymic patients. Autism spectrum disorder:difficulties in diagnosis and microRNA biomarkers

We performed a pubMed search for microRNAs in autism spectrum disorder that could serve as diagnostic biomarkers in patients and selected 17 articles published from January 2008 to December 2023,of which 4 studies were performed with whole blood,4 with blood plasma,5 with blood serum,1 with serum neural cell adhesion molecule L1-captured extracellular vesicles,1 with blood cells,and 2 with peripheral blood mononuclear *** of the studies involved children and the study cohorts were largely *** of the studies had performed microRNA sequencing or quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays to measure microRNA *** five studies had used real-time polymerase chain reaction assay to validate microRNA expression in autism spectrum disorder subjects compared to *** microRNAs that were validated in these studies may be considered as potential candidate biomarkers for autism spectrum disorder and include miR-500a-5p,-197-5p,-424-5p,-664a-3p,-365a-3p,-619-5p,-664a-3p,-3135a,-328-3p,and-500a-5p in blood plasma and miR-151a-3p,-181b-5p,-320a,-328,-433,-489,-572,-663a,-101-3p,-106b-5p,-19b-3p,-195-5p,and-130a-3p in blood serum of children,and miR-15b-5p and-6126 in whole blood of *** important limitations were identified in the studies reviewed,and need to be taken into account in future *** studies are warranted with children and adults having different levels of autism spectrum disorder severity and consideration should be given to using animal models of autism spectrum disorder to investigate the effects of suppressing or overexpressing specific microRNAs as a novel therapy.

Effect of Combined Chilling and GA_3 Treatment on Bud Abortion in Forced ‘Luoyanghong' Tree peony(paeonia suffruticosa Andr.)

This research investigated the effect of combined chilling and GA_3 treatment on bud abortion of tree peony under greenhouse conditions to determine the dynamics of exogenous hormones and chilling effects on bud abortion. Research of such nature will increase the understanding of the effects of GA_3 and chilling level on flower development thereby, promoting off-season cultivation techniques in tree peonies to increase production that meets market demand. Hormone and sugar levels in the ‘Luoyanghong' tree peony were respectively determined using High-performance Liquid Chromatography(HpLC) and spectrophotometer. Non-potted chilling with 200 mg·L^(-1) GA_3 treatment reduced bud abortion rate. Flowering rate in non-potted chilling with 200 mg·L^(-1) GA_3 plants was 58%, as against 21% in potted chilling plants with 200 mg·L^(-1) GA_3 treatment. Sugar accumulation in retained or aborted flower buds was conversely related to ABA level. Low ABA and high sugar levels were noted in retained buds whereas the reverse induced bud abortion. ABA level apparently inhibited sucrose and reducing sugar uptake in aborted buds whereas GA_3 enhanced sucrose uptake in retained buds. GA_3 and IAA levels were higher in retained than in aborted buds, which made plants with retained bud more competitive in nutrient uptake(by root)for growth and development. Overall, combined chilling and GA_3 treatment enhanced plant growth and development, particularly bud sprouting, growth and flowering.

Free radical scavenging and reducing power of Lawsonia inermis ***

Objective:To determine the antioxidant activity,total phenolic and flavonoid content of petroleum ether extract（pE）,Dichloromethane extract（DCM）,Ethanol extract（ET） and aqueous extract（AQ） of henna ***:Total antioxidant assay（phosphomolybenum method）, DppH radical scavenging assay,reducing power assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay were used to ascertain the potential of seeds as an ***:In all the assays carried out ET showed a greater potential to scavenge DppH radical,reduce MO（Ⅳ） to MO（Ⅴ） complex and Fe（Ⅲ） to Fe（Ⅱ） and to inhibit lipid *** IC50 of ET was far greater than that of the standard,ascorbic acid（AS） in the lipid peroxidation *** activity of AQ was lesser when compared with that of ET but greater than pE and *** amount of phenolics and flavonoids were present in higher amounts in ET followed by *** amounts of phenolics were detected in pE and DCM,but the amount of flavonoids were below the detection *** study showed that the antioxidant activity and the concentrations of phenolics and flavonoids are proportionate to each ***:Ethanolic extract of henna seeds are efficient antioxidants,which can be utilized for further isolation of active compounds and pharmaceutical applications.

In the field of earthquake engineering,the advent of the performance-based design philosophy,together with the highly uncertain nature of earthquake ground excitations to structures,has brought probabilistic performance-based design to the forefront of seismic *** order to design structures that explicitly satisfy probabilistic performance criteria,a probabilistic performance-based optimum seismic design(ppBOSD)framework is proposed in this paper by extending the state-of-the-art performance-based earthquake engineering(pBEE)*** is traditionally used for risk evaluation of existing or newly designed structural systems,thus referred to herein as forward pBEE *** contrast,its use for design purposes is limited because design is essentially a more challenging inverse *** address this challenge,a decision-making layer is wrapped around the forward pBEE analysis procedure for computer-aided optimum structural design/retrofit accounting for various sources of *** this paper,the framework is illustrated and validated using a proof-of-concept problem,namely tuning a simplified nonlinear inelastic single-degreeof-freedom(SDOF)model of a bridge to achieve a target probabilistic loss hazard *** this purpose,first the forward pBEE analysis is presented in conjunction with the multilayer Monte Carlo simulation method to estimate the total loss hazard curve efficiently,followed by a sensitivity study to investigate the effects of system(design)parameters on the probabilistic seismic performance of the *** proposed ppBOSD framework is validated by successfully tuning the system parameters of the structure rated for a target probabilistic seismic loss hazard *** ppBOSD framework provides a tool that is essential to develop,calibrate and validate simplified probabilistic performance-based design procedures.

The pikas of China: a review of current research priorities and challenges for conservation

Computational Study on the Influence of Number of Threads on the perfor-mance of Single Screw pump at High Angular Velocities

Fluid flow in a screw pump which rotates at very high angular velocity is numerically analyzed. In the present study, fluid flow in screw pumps under high Reynolds number, of the order of 105, is considered. Screw pump has two major elements, a plain shroud which is a stationary element and a rotating hub with helical grooves contained within the shroud. In this paper, three variants of hubs with different number of thread starts numbering six, eight and twelve in combination with a plain shroud is studied. Each of the three possible combinations are analyzed on the basis of pressure rise developed, efficiency and shaft power. It was seen that pressure rise, efficiency and shaft power increases as the number of threads increases in the range of mass flow rates studied.
