The Southern African biomes are complex biotic communities, with its distinctive plant and animal species, and are maintained under the suitable climatic conditions of the region. It includes the Fynbos Biome and the Succulent Karoo Biome, which forms the smallest of the world’s six Floristic Kingdoms, and they are of conservation concern. The other six biomes are Albany Thicket, Desert, grassland, Indian Ocean Coastal belt, Nama-Karoo, Savanna. The biomes are not only threatened by agricultural expansion, overgrazing, and mining;but also by future climate changes and droughts. This study investigates the how to best model the possible vulnerable biome areas, under future climate changes, and how Southern African geology plays a huge role in the restriction of the biome shifts. It provides evidence regarding the importance of the study to understanding the climate change impacts and the geological variables on the Southern African biomes, in terms of possible future biome habitat loss.

This paper proposes an empirical wavelet transform(EWT)based method for identification and analysis of sub-synchronous oscillation(SSO)modes in the power system using phasor measurement unit(PMU)*** phasors from PMUs are preprocessed to check for the presence of *** the presence is established,the signal is decomposed using EWT and the parameters of the mono-components are estimated through Yoshida *** superiority of the proposed method is tested using test signals with known parameters and simulated using actual SSO signals from the Hami Power grid in Northwest *** show the effectiveness of the proposed EWT-Yoshida method in detecting the SSO and estimating its parameters.

Neurons and glial cells, particularly astrocytes, are the two main cell populations in the central nervous system. While it is established that brain functions primarily rely on neuronal activity, an active contribution of astrocytes to information processing is only starting to be considered. There is growing evidence that astrocytes, as part of the tripartite synapse, participate in this challenge by receiving and integrating neuronal signals and, in turn, by sending signals that target neurons[1]. The involvement of astrocytes in information processing has mainly been studied at the level of the single astrocyte, often missing the role of astrocyte networks in this process.

Background:Hard-to-heal wounds are often compromised by the presence of *** presents an infection risk,yet traditional antimicrobial wound care products and systemic antibiotics are often used despite the uncertainty of therapeutic success and wound *** aim of this study was to investigate the clinical impact of a next-generation anti-biofilm Hydrofiber wound dressing(AQUACEL Ag+Extra[AQAg+E])in hard-to-heal wounds that had previously been treated unsuccessfully with traditional silver-,iodine-or polyhexamethylene biguanide(PHMB)-containing dressings and products and/or systemic ***:Clinical case study evaluations of the anti-biofilm dressing were conducted,where deteriorating or stagnant wounds were selected by clinicians and primary dressings were replaced by the anti-biofilm dressing for up to 4 weeks,or as deemed clinically appropriate,with monitoring via case report *** data was stratified for cases where traditional silver-,iodine-or PHMBcontaining products,or systemic antibiotics,had been used prior to the introduction of the antibiofilm ***:Sixty-five cases were identified for inclusion,wounds ranging in duration from 1 week to 20 years(median:12 months).In 47(72%)cases the wounds were stagnant,while 15(23%)were deteriorating;3 wounds were not *** an average of 4.2 weeks of management with the anti-biofilm dressing(range:1–11 weeks),in 11(17%)cases the wounds had healed(*** wound closure),40(62%)wounds improved,9(14%)wounds remained the same and 5(8%)wounds ***:The introduction of this anti-biofilm dressing into protocols of care that had previously involved wound management with traditional antimicrobial products and/or antibiotics was shown to facilitate improvements in the healing status of most of these hard-to-heal *** containing proven anti-biofilm technology,in combination with antimicrobial silver and exudate management technology,appear to b

Background: The evolution of sexual signals is not only determined by immediate sexual selection but also by selection arising from the environment and the interaction with developmental *** this study we aimed to investigate how the badge size of male house sparrows(Passer domesticus) is correlated to avian malaria infections as well as to prenatal testosterone exposure,measured as the 2D:4D digit *** rationale behind this study is that the immunosuppressive effect of maternal testosterone deposition combined with the fitness cost imposed by parasites may cause important trade-offs to the development of secondary sexual ***: Assuming that vector abundance is a key variable associated with infection risk by avian malaria,we caught adult male sparrows from eight different populations in the Camargue,France,four of which were located in a vector-controlled area,and the other four in an untreated *** each bird we measured its badge size,digit ratio and took blood to determine its infections *** used PCR to identify the malaria parasite species and strain that caused the ***: Contrary to our expectation,prevalence of disease did not differ across the vector-treatment regions,with around 80 % of birds being infected in both areas,and those infections were caused largely by a single strain,Plasmodium relictum *** infected birds had a badge size not significantly different from uninfected males,there was a condition-dependent association between badge size,infection status and maternal testosterone ***: This study illustrates that the complexity of temporal and ecological dimensions makes the relationships between disease,testosterone-related traits and secondary sexual signals that have been previously reported less general than thought.

Pitting and stress corrosion cracking(SCC) studies on the 316 N stainless steel(SS) weldments in aswelded(AW) and thermally aged(solution annealing(SA), 550C/4 h and 750C/1 h) conditions were carried out in acidic and acidic chloride media. Pitting corrosion and SCC resistance was the highest for SA weldment, which was attributed to homogenization of microstructural and microchemical heterogeneities during solution annealing. SA specimen showed the most stable passive film as compared to AW weldment because of higher amount of delta-ferrite in AW weld metal, which resulted in an increased heterogeneity and inferior SCC resistance in AW. Stability of passive film was found to be adversely affected due to heat treatments(at 550C/4 h and 750C/1 h) because of the precipitation of carbide and sigma phases.

gNSS signals have previously been modulated using binary phase shift keying but this modulation scheme is being replaced by binary offset carrier(BOC)*** has considered how the BOC signals might be affected differently when passed through a surface acoustic wave(SAW)*** concern has been that because of the split spectrum nature of the BOC signals,the upper and lower side-lobes will be delayed significantly *** was suggested because SAW filters have nonlinear phase characteristics and therefore different frequencies are delayed *** was suggested that this difference in delay will result in greater distortion of the correlation triangle.A delay magnification effect was also mentioned when analyzing the delay of a BOC *** was not understood why the theoretical delay calculations did not match up with the actual results in both hardware and *** paper clarifies some of the confusion and explains why the“delay magnification”applies to phase delay but not group *** paper also takes a look at how the code phase delay can vary with frequency and correlator spacing as a result of the SAW filter properties.

Objective:To determine the antioxidant activity,total phenolic and flavonoid content of Petroleum ether extract（PE）,Dichloromethane extract（DCM）,Ethanol extract（ET） and aqueous extract（AQ） of henna ***:Total antioxidant assay（phosphomolybenum method）, DPPH radical scavenging assay,reducing power assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay were used to ascertain the potential of seeds as an ***:In all the assays carried out ET showed a greater potential to scavenge DPPH radical,reduce MO（Ⅳ） to MO（Ⅴ） complex and Fe（Ⅲ） to Fe（Ⅱ） and to inhibit lipid *** IC50 of ET was far greater than that of the standard,ascorbic acid（AS） in the lipid peroxidation *** activity of AQ was lesser when compared with that of ET but greater than PE and *** amount of phenolics and flavonoids were present in higher amounts in ET followed by *** amounts of phenolics were detected in PE and DCM,but the amount of flavonoids were below the detection *** study showed that the antioxidant activity and the concentrations of phenolics and flavonoids are proportionate to each ***:Ethanolic extract of henna seeds are efficient antioxidants,which can be utilized for further isolation of active compounds and pharmaceutical applications.
