Packed colum.s are widely used in the chem.cal industry such as absorption,stripping,distillation,and extraction in the production of *** chem.cals,and *** loss and pressure drop correlations are of special interest when it com.s to the hydrodynam.c properties of a *** pressure loss across the colum. is of interest in the design phase when the size of the blower to drive the gas stream.through the colum. has to be *** loading point and flooding point are also influenced by the pressure loss and the area of operation is determ.ned from.these *** work exam.nes four different correlations on pressure *** correlations are(i)Ergun’s equation(1952),(ii)an im.roved version of Ergun’s equation by Stichlm.ir,Bravo,and Fair(1989),(iii)an equation developed by Billet and Schultes(1999),and(iv)an equation by Rocha,Bravo,and Fair(1993).The com.lexity of the correlations is increasing in the m.ntioned order,Ergun’s equation being the sim.lest *** study investigates if the m.re com.licated correlations give better predictions to pressure drop in packed *** is determ.ned by com.aring the correlations to experim.ntal data for pressure drop in a packed colum. with 8.2 m.of structured packing using water as the liquid and atm.spheric air as the *** experim.nts were carried out for determ.ning the pressure drop in the colum. with liquid flows varying from.0 to 500 kg·h^(-1).At constant liquid flow,the gas flow was varied from.approxim.tely 10 to 70 kg·h^(-1).The pressure drop across the non-wetted colum. was best described by the correlation by Rocha et *** the pressure drop for liquid flows from.100 to 500 kg·h^(-1)was,in general,best described by Stichlm.ir’s *** an irrigated colum.,the highest deviation was a predicted pressure drop 69.6%lower than *** best prediction was 0.1%higher than the *** study shows,surprisingly,that for a system.of water and atm.spheric air,com.lica

SUBSURFACE TEm.ERATURE AND ITS RELATION TO DYNAm.C HEIGHT AT 130°E ACROSS THENORTH EQUATORIAL CURRENT

Tem.erature profiles down to 1500m.CTD) collected by Academ.a Sinica from.1986 to 1990 are used and discussed in relation to the dynam.c heights at130 E across the North Equatorial Current (NEC). An extrem.ly high correlation between subsurface (say at 400 m.depth) tem.erature and dynam.c height relative to 1500 db is found, and the corresponding regression relationships suggest a m.thod to estim.te gpostrophic circulation from.subsurface tem.erature alone. These suggest that the conclusions from.extensive studies on this topic in Australian waters also apply to the NEC region, at least at130 E , thus m.king the subsurface therm.l structure an excellent indicator of the variation of the NEC.

In this paper,an electrostatic com.liant m.chanical am.lifier intended for force-com.ensated displacem.nt am.lification in m.m. sensor applications is ***,m.chanical transform.rs that enhance a sm.ll input displacem.nt into a large output displacem.nt generate large forces at the input of the *** m.crosystem.proposed here allows for the reduction and com.ensation of the input stiffness of the am.lifier and any m.chanical com.onents connected to it while providing a constant am.lification ratio at the sam. *** am.lifying m.chanism.features bidirectional electrostatic anti-springs enabling the control of the stiffness by applying a constant DC *** electrode design of the anti-springs and its influence on the force-displacem.nt characteristic,the side instability and the m.xim.l displacem.nt are studied through analytical approaches and supported by FEA and by *** on the derived m.dels,a com.liant electrom.chanical am.lifier is developed,featuring an am.lification ratio of *** this am.lifier the initial input stiffness of 422 N/m.could be reduced to 6.8 N/m.by applying a voltage of 100 *** an additional application,we show how the am.lifier can be used as a m.chanical force sensor with tuneable sensitivity,where the forces at the input are transform.d into large output *** experim.nts,we show how the sensitivity can be adjusted and increased by a factor of 25 by applying a voltage at the anti-springs.

Im.ACT OF URBANIZATION ON STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF RIVER SYSTEm.Case Study of Shanghai,China

Urbanization can affect the physical process of river growth, m.dify stream.structure and further influence the functions of river system. Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world, which is located in Changjiang (Yangtze) River Delta in China. Since the 1970s, the whole river system.in Shanghai has been planned and m.naged by the Shanghai Water Authority. The prim.ry m.nagem.nt objectives in the last 30 years have been to enhance irrigation and flood-control. By using Horton-Strahler classification and Horton laws as a reference, a novel m.thod of stream.classification, in conjunction with the traditional and specially designed indicators, was applied to understanding the structure and functions of the river system.in Shanghai. Correlation analysis was used to identify the interrelations am.ng indicators. It was found that the im.act of urbanization on the river system.was significant although natural laws and physical characteristics m.rked a super-developed river system. There was an obvious correlation between the degree of urbanization and the abnorm.l values of som. indicators. Urbanization im.acts on river system.such as branches engineered out, riverbank concreting and low diversity of river style were widely observed. Each indicator had distinct sensibility to urbanization so they could be used to describe different characteristics of urban river system. The function indicators were significantly related to structure indicators. Stream.structure, described by fractal dim.nsion and com.lexity of river system. was as im.ortant as water area ratio for m.intaining river’s m.lti-function.

Honesty, power and bootstrapping in com.osite interval quantitative trait locus m.pping

In a typical com.osite interval m.pping experim.nt, the probability of obtaining false QTL is likely to be at least an order of m.gnitude greater than the nom.nal experim.nt-wise Type I error rate, as set by perm.tation test. F2 m.pping crosses were sim.lated with three different genetic m.ps. Each m.p contained ten QTL on either three, six or twelve linkage groups. QTL effects were additive only, and heritability was 50%. Each linkage group had 11 evenly-spaced (10 cm. m.rkers. Selective genotyping was used. Sim.lated data were analyzed by com.osite interval m.pping with the Zm.pqtl program.of QTL Cartographer. False positives were m.nim.zed by using the largest feasible num.er of m.rkers to control genetic background effects. Bootstrapping was then used to recover m.pping power lost to the large num.er of conditioning m.rkers. Bootstrapping is shown to be a useful tool for QTL discovery, although it can also produce false positives. Quantitative bootstrap support—the proportion of bootstrap replicates in which a significant likelihood m.xim.m.occurred in a given m.rker interval—was positively correlated with the probability that the likelihood m.xim. revealed a true QTL. X-linked QTL were detected with m.ch lower power than autosom.l QTL. It is suggested that QTL m.pping experim.nts should be supported by accom.anying sim.lations that replicate the m.rker m.p, crossing design, sam.le size, and m.thod of analysis used for the actual experim.nt.

Rangeland hillslope lengths:A case study at the Walnut Gulch Experim.ntal Watershed,southeastern Arizona

Rangeland hillslopes provide m.ch of the sedim.nt supplied to channel system. and their lengths exert a fundam.ntal constraint on hillslope diffusive ***,inform.tion regarding lengths of rangeland hillslopes,and how best to estim.te them.is *** this study,three groups of watersheds(10 in total)were selected from.the Walnut Gulch Experim.ntal Watershed according to their geology,soil and vegetation *** 1 watersheds were at lower elevations dom.nated by shrubs,Group 3 were at high elevations dom.nated by grass,and Group 2 were m.xed shrub and *** hillslope lengths were calculated from.1 m.resolution DEm. using three m.thods:a flow routing algorithm.slope-area relationships,and inverted relationship with drainage *** that characterize the current watersheds,including Hack's exponent and coefficient,watershed shape coefficient,channel concavity and steepness,and surface roughness,were quantified and related to hillslope *** shows:(1)estim.ted hillslope lengths were different for the three m.thods and between the three groups of watersheds;(2)hillslope lengths that m.asured from.the flow routing algorithm.for the ten selected watersheds prim.rily ranged from.30 to 100 m.with a m.dian value of 63.0 m.which was 20%e50%greater than those derived from.slope-area plots or drainage densities;(3)hillslope lengths estim.ted from.the flow routing m.thod were greater in Group 3 watersheds than in Group 2 and then in Group 1 *** attributed these differences in hillslope lengths to the historic epeirogenic pulses,watershed and drainage network m.rphology,and differences in vegetation characteristics;(4)m.asured hillslope lengths from.the flow routing algorithm.were best correlated with hillslope relief,then surface roughness,channel steepness and *** results would benefit the applications of hydrological and erosion m.dels in rangelands.
